Quotes

  • Carrie Wells : Good morning.

Al Burns : Morning. Where are you?

Carrie Wells : At my desk.

Al Burns : Where are you really?

Carrie Wells : I'm actually at my desk.

Al Burns : Hey, look, pigs are flying.

Carrie Wells : Very funny. I got a new alarm clock, you know. It brews coffee and picks out my outfit.

  • Howard 'Huey' Lang : Ms. McShane.

Carrie Wells : Ann. I've waited years for a seat at one of your tables, Mr. Lang.

Howard 'Huey' Lang : Frank, to my friends.

Carrie Wells : So, is there a lot of money to be made tonight?

Howard 'Huey' Lang : I always have a lot of money at my tables.

Carrie Wells : Well, then you and I are gonna be very good friends.

  • Al Burns : Hundreds of people around, nobody will admit to seeing it go down. Rec center was sponsporing a tournament for all the borough's youth league teams. First game had just started when the shooting happened.

Carrie Wells : Which was when?

Al Burns : Uh, twenty, twenty-five minutes ago.

Roe Saunders : We got the perimeter locked down?

Al Burns : Security on the scene did the best they could. I'm sure they lost some people after the shooting.

Carrie Wells : [looking around]  Let me guess. That camera's not working.

Al Burns : Yeah, apparently the neighborhood kids use it for target practice.

  • Carrie Wells : [after a shooting at the scene of a shooting]  Do we know who this is?

Al Burns : No, but he's wearing QB-6 gang colors.

Roe Saunders : Yeah, we got guns dumped all over the place. Seven so far. Looks like some were fired, some weren't.

Carrie Wells : Smart. Don't want to get caught carrying here.

Al Burns : Ballistics will be working overtime tonight. This is officially a nightmare.

  • Carrie Wells : You used a seventeen year old girl as a confidential informant?

Detective Ben Cortez : She was helping us build a case against DKK.

Al Burns : She was informing on her own gang?

Detective Ben Cortez : For about a month, yes.

Carrie Wells : Well, no wonder you looked so shocked when you saw her on the ground. You got her killed.

  • Carrie Wells : Okay, let's start with the first shot. It came from over... here. The sound was muffled. It had to be point-blank range. So that would make our first victim after Marisa: Jim Clayburn.

Roe Saunders : Yeah, found him right here. So maybe we're right. He knew who was after Marisa and confronted him. Okay. What's next?

Carrie Wells : Five shots from over here, three from a bigger caliber gun. Six shots so far.

Roe Saunders : That's one of our guys we picked up... 45 automatic. But none of the victims was shot with a .45, so he's just shooting.

Carrie Wells : So, from this angle, one of the bullets could have hit our bystander, Beverly Jackson.

Roe Saunders : Bullet like that'd do some damage.

Carrie Wells : No, it was just a flesh wound. I mean, I'm sure it stung a little, but she was kind of dramatic.

Roe Saunders : [sarcastic]  Oh, wow. Your empathy's overwhelming

  • Carrie Wells : Crime scene only picked up ten shell casings.

    Roe Saunders : Yeah, so?

Carrie Wells : So there was an eleventh shot. It killed Mendoza. I heard it.

Roe Saunders : Yeah, where from?

Carrie Wells : Right back... here.

Roe Saunders : There was a Parks Enforcement guard near there. He might have had a front-row seat.

Carrie Wells : Yeah, he was there.

Roe Saunders : He give a statement?

Carrie Wells : Herb Waters, age 51, sixteen year veteran of the Parks and Recreation Department. His statement, and I quote: "I didn't see any of the shooters."

Roe Saunders : Mm-hmm. Yeah, well, we should talk to him again. Even if he didn't see a shooter, maybe he saw someone picking up the casing, or at least looking for something on the ground.

    Carrie Wells : Maybe.

Roe Saunders : Hey, quick. What'd I have for lunch yesterday?

Carrie Wells : I don't know, Roe. What'd you have for lunch yesterday?

Roe Saunders : I don't know. I was hoping you'd remember, so I could order something else.

  • Al Burns : I just got a call from a lieutentant in the 3-8. Why were your fingerprints lifted after a raid on an illegal poker game in some Chinese restaurant?

Carrie Wells : They have good dim sum.

    Al Burns : You're a cop!

Carrie Wells : Yes, whose annual salary doesn't even begin to cover my mother's care.

Al Burns : That's your excuse? You needed the money for Alice?

Carrie Wells : Oh, come on, Al. It was a harmless card game.

    Al Burns : It's illegal!

Carrie Wells : Yes, and I'm sure they arrested a lot of very bad people.

Al Burns : And you're lucky one of them wasn't you. You'd lose your badge and you'd go to jail. How would your mom be then?

Carrie Wells : What do you want me to say?

  • Carrie Wells : You're a lawyer, right? Mulligan & Waters?

Beverly Jackson : Yes. We're at, uh, 40...

Carrie Wells : 40th and Park, on the 59th floor, I know. So you didn't see anything? Nothing at all? What about when you were walking to the cheese shop? Do you remember which route you took? Before you answer, you should know that we are gonna use all of our resources to verify your answer. You should be easy to remember; you were wearing that burnt orange jacket, turquoise scarf, and those earrings that were, frankly, way too big for the outfit.

  • Carrie Wells : Tito's telling the truth; he wasn't armed and he didn't run.

Al Burns : You sure about this?

Carrie Wells : We didn't find the murder weapon at the scene. I saw that officer frisk him. At that point, he did not have a gun, which means he couldn't have shot Clayburn.

Al Burns : So Clayburn was wrong.

Carrie Wells : Either that or he's lying.

Detective Ben Cortez : Okay, assuming you're remembering right and Tito didn't shoot Clayburn...

Al Burns : She's remembering right.

  • Roe Saunders : When we brought Tito in, he took his phone call. Another perp overheard him ordering a hit on the amigo who got him locked up.

    Al Burns : What amigo?

Roe Saunders : Tito didn't mention a name.

Carrie Wells : If Tito handed off his gun to someone else, that someone can tie him to Marisa's murder.

Al Burns : We better figure out who it is and find 'em before Tito's people do.

  • Detective Ben Cortez : I just wanted to set the record straight on Marisa. I told you that if I had to do it over again, I would've said no. But the fact is, I'm not so sure.

Carrie Wells : You're not so sure.

Detective Ben Cortez : This is a hellish job, trying to stop children from killing children. And I say god bless Jim Clayburn for everything he does, but unless those kids see things another way, it's never gonna stop. And you and I can't show that to them. Only the Marisas can do that.

Carrie Wells : Not anymore she can't.

Detective Ben Cortez : Don't be so sure. Anyway, I just wanted to be honest with you.

  • Al Burns : So, uh, about this harmless little card game.

Carrie Wells : Do we have to talk about that?

Al Burns : I get the money part, your mom; not saying it's right, but I get it. And since nobody was injured, I'll square things with the 3-8, tell them you were undercover on a case.

    Carrie Wells : Thank you.

Al Burns : But you and I both know this stuff you do, it's not really for the money.

    Carrie Wells : Maybe not.

Al Burns : See, I think you get a little bored sometimes. You like to push it a little.

Carrie Wells : Maybe more than a little.

Al Burns : Except there's this whole badge thing, you know, what we do here.

Carrie Wells : Right. I know. I'm gonna work on that.

Al Burns : Just say you'll be careful.

Carrie Wells : [with a sigh]  Hmm.

Al Burns : That a promise?

    Carrie Wells : That's a "hmm."

  • Al Burns : [seeing Carrie and Cortez wave goodbye]  Oh. So you're on a waving basis now?

Carrie Wells : [laughing]  Yeah, it would appear that way.

Al Burns : He's not your type.

    Carrie Wells : Really?

    Al Burns : Absolutely.

Carrie Wells : How can you be so sure?

Al Burns : Because I don't like him.
