Curious, Funny, Random, Admirable All the Way

A random and funny short film about the crazed power effects of sound waves and the wavelength effect on people, animals and also the great city of São Paulo. "Ondas" ("Waves") shows that the electricity, the sound and whatever driving force we use in our daily lives can have a distinct and unusual effect on people's lives, sometimes using to their benefit or at times being surprisignly caught in the middle of events.

Two paralel stories: three women on a car are listening to random song on the radio at the same time they capture the police radio system and cause some interference. Later on, we'll find out they take advantage of a chaotic situation to procede with a bank robbery; a lady loses her hearing aid which is eaten by her cat and later on the cat has the ability to talk to humans and even gets interviewed by famous reporter Caco Barcellos (an interesting cameo for the journalist). In between sequences there's a man on TV talking about frequences, extraterrestrial contacts and the waves used for such communication. Too crazed but nevertheless interesting.

There isn't much of a deeper message about it, and if there is more observer viewers will find something hidden there. I was only in it for the comedic elements, trying to see how those stories would connect besides the power of sound and I end up loving it. And from what could I pick up in between sequences maybe it was some alien interference from outer space that caused that whole mess in the city (and the crowd loved the cat, who's actually communicating with a superior force where we can only understand what he's saying because the caption translates everything). There's so many good ideas in here that if given a bigger budget and a more developed scenario this could be an interesting feature film. A rarity from the 1980's Brazil cinema. 10/10.
