Wounded North Korean Soldiers Fighting to the Death
Uriah436 January 2024
This film essentially begins with a small number of wounded North Korean soldiers marching back to the rear to be attended to by a field hospital behind the lines. Along the way they hear a report that enemy scouts have been spotted nearby and they quickly engage in combat with them. It's then that they learn from a few enemy soldiers they captured that an airborne unit is preparing to occupy the exact position that they're currently located in about 12 hours. Extremely concerned about this new development, the North Korean officer named "Commander Choi Il Bom" (Pong-sik Choe) tells his wounded comrades that they must prepare to engage and defeat the paratroopers at all costs. And then, as luck would have it, he is soon joined by a small truck carrying a handful of other soldiers along with some local villagers who are willing to fight the enemy as well. The problem, however, is that not only does this unit lack enough arms and ammunition, but Commander Choi Il Bom has been informed that if he doesn't have his wound treated within 48 hours, he will die. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that, considering the rather limited resources of the North Korean film industry, this movie wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. Naturally, being a film produced in North Korea, it has its fair share of propaganda extolling the virtues of Kim Il-sung. I suppose it goes with the territory. Be that as it may, while it certainly isn't one of the better Korean War films ever produced, I suppose it has some entertainment value, and I have rated it accordingly. Slightly below average.
