Very powerful first episode.

Jimmy, aka Noodle learns that his childhood friend Tully is terminally ill, he reaches out and asks his old mate for help.

I had no ideas beforehand what this was or the subject, but Tony Curran and Martin Compston, two actors I'd watch doing anything. This hour came as a surprise.

The first fifteen minutes, I thought it was going to be hard to watch, heavy drama, it does deal with a particularly bleak theme, but it is incredibly moving, powerful, thoughtful drama, it's a true story about friendship.

The acting truly was excellent, as you'd expect, the two guys playing that young Jimmy and Noodle were excellent.

I loved the use of old footage, it was well mixed in.

I'm expecting to be in tears in the next episode, I know what Curran is capable of.

Powerful story, 8/10.

Episode 1

I recall a few years ago being upset that an old school acquaintance of mines had suddenly died of a heart attack while still in his 40s.

We were not great friends and I probably only saw him a few times after we left school. It was just that he was the first person from our year at school that I learned had passed away.

The first but definitely not the last. Another went soon after and I realised so it begins.

Jimmy (Martin Compston) and Tully (Tony Curran) are lifelong friends who grew up together. Now Jimmy is a writer in London but heads up back to Scotland to receive news that Tully has terminal cancer.

With constant flashbacks to their youth. Mayflies is a story about friendship, growing up and letting go.

The crux of the story in the first episode is not about friendship. It is that friendship being tested. Tully wants to go on his own terms and with dignity. This means a trip to Switzerland.

The soundtrack of the 1980s chimed with me. I did like the performance from Curran. I could not help noticing that this American based actor plays heavies over the pond. Yet it is in Britain he has had some of his best and varied roles.
