Quotes

  • Himself (The Humane Society of the United States) : Most people simply have no idea how abused most farm animals really are, and if they did know, they would be outraged. And then in the case of chickens, where we have nine billion of these animals being raised and killed every year for food, they truly are the most abused animals in the world of agribusiness. Whether it's chickens raised for meat who are bred to grow so quickly that they suffer from all types of leg disorders, heart problems, and lung problems, or chickens who are used for eggs, who are confined in battery cages that are so restrictive that they are unable even to spread their wings, chickens are treated absolutely horrifically, and it's time for us as a society to begin addressing this serious problem. These birds are shackled upside down by their legs, which is painful and terrifying for them, because many of them already have bruises, fractures, and broken bones from their violent catching and transport process. The birds are then passed through an electrified bath, which generally only renders them immobile - paralyzed, but not unconscious, not insensible to pain. Then the birds have their throats cut, and those who don't have their throats cut, those who miss the mechanical blade, end up dying by drowning in a tank of scalding water that's designed to loosen their feathers. The current method of slaughtering these birds is absolutely nightmarish, and it needs to come to an end.
