With “Cocaine Bear” notching another win in Universal’s recent run of “silly cinema” hits alongside “Violent Night” and “M3gan,” Bleecker Street is offering up its own escapist high concept pitch. “Mafia Mamma” stars Toni Collette as an American who inherits her grandfather’s business in Italy only to discover that the family business is the mafia.
With help from the firm’s consigliere (Monica Bellucci), she is placed in the position of having to acclimate to her new role as the head of a crime family while avoiding war with a rival family. This trailer — which you can see below — focuses on its protagonist and fish-out-of-water scenario, including Collette admitting she’s never seen “The Godfather” and giving momentary thought to using her newfound crime powers to whack her cheating husband.

Some very sad news hit the Arrowverse community this week, as it’s being reported that teen actor Logan Williams passed away suddenly on April 3rd.
Perhaps best known for portraying a younger Barry Allen on The Flash, he was 16 years old when he died. No cause of death has been revealed just yet, but Williams’ mother spoke out about her son’s passing and said she’s “absolutely devastated” by it.
“I am not able to hug my parents who lost their only grandchild,” she added. “With his talent and gorgeous looks, Logan had the potential to be a huge star.”
Grant Gustin, meanwhile, who stars as the older version of Barry on The Flash, paid tribute to Logan in a touching Instagram post, writing the following:
“Just hearing the devastating news that Logan Williams has passed away suddenly. I was so impressed by not only Logan’s talent but his professionalism on set.

When nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced last month, few were surprised that the Best Director and Best Picture categories arrived without a single female director or female-directed film. Despite a stellar year in filmmaking from women, this year’s Oscars were mired in a trend that has just a single female director winning a much-deserved Best Director statuette in the ceremony’s history.
Among the unsurprised: Catherine Hardwicke, one of Hollywood’s most successful commercial directors (thanks to the $400M “Twilight”) and a filmmaker whose first feature earned her a directing award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2003. With over three decades in Hollywood under her belt, the former production designer understands where the disconnect comes from — but that doesn’t mean she likes it.

Jason Blum is “sorry” for his “dumb comments” about a lack of female directors available to make movies under his Blumhouse banner.
“Thank you everyone for calling me out on my dumb comments in that interview,” he said early Thursday morning on Twitter, referencing a Polygon piece that was published not 20 hours prior. “I made a stupid mistake.”
Blum then went on to point out the female-skewing demographics of both his audience and executive team. He also referenced actress Jamie Lee Curtis as the anchor of his new movie “Halloween,” which hits theaters tomorrow. In addition to starring in the film, Curtis is also an executive producer on it.

“Better Call Saul” writer Gennifer Hutchison offered some advice to Jason Blum after the Blumhouse Productions chief said in an interview that he’s “trying” to hire a woman to direct a horror film at his studio, but there aren’t enough willing to take a stab at the genre.
“Producers and studios, if they are really serious about hiring women directors, need to work on fostering talent that has been overlooked rather than simply chasing the overbooked few female directors,” Hutchison said in a tweet. “You have to take chances on new voices to achieve parity.”
Blum’s comments came in response to a Polygon interview question that pointed out his Blumhouse has never produced a theatrically released horror movie directed by a woman.

The horror genre has defined the success of Blumhouse Productions ever since the company’s “Paranormal Activity” became one of the most profitable films ever made in 2007. While the company, led by Jason Blum, has had unparalleled success, the studio has failed to produce any horror movies directed by female filmmakers over the last 11 years and counting. Polygon editor Matt Patches recently informed Blum about the statistic during an interview for “Halloween,” to which Blum assured the studio has actively searched for female directing talent.
“We’re always trying to do that,” Blum said. “We’re not trying to do it because of recent events. We’ve always been trying. There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror. I’m a massive admirer of [‘The Babadook’ director] Jennifer Kent. Sisterhood of the Big C: Hardwicke and Case of the Dramatic Cancer Clause
Those who’ve been yearning for a remake of Garry Marshall’s beloved 1988 tearjerker Beaches but were afraid to admit it are in luck. Director Catherine Hardwicke has done just that with her latest film, Miss You Already, a contemporary documentation of two life-long girlfriends torn asunder by cancer. At times touching and not without a certain degree of emotional depth, there’s an odd tone of inauthenticity plaguing this melancholy friendship fantasy, enough to rob it of real dramatic integrity. It’s a rare portrait of sobering adulthood from Hardwicke, who tends to gravitate towards angsty portraits of rebellious teens, from her much loved debut Thirteen (2003) to the first chapter of the Twilight (2008) film series. But it’s another failed attempt at Hardwicke’s struggle to reinvent herself, following on the heels of fairy tale reboot...

Though she’s experienced overwhelming success and fortune over the course of her career, Kristen Stewart knows hers is not the typical story.
While chatting about the plight of women in the film industry, the “Twilight” actress said things can be difficult in the “male-dominated and driven business, though it’s also fun to be the underdog.”
Referencing Catherine Hardwicke’s “Plush” movie’s straight-to-vod release, Stewart continued, "That's a thing that women have to do—you must persevere. That's what we've been doing. You need to make something that's undeniably good. If a woman makes a bad movie, or does something stupid, then the door just slams shut. It's f*cked up."
Furthermore, Kristen asserts, young women need to stop being afraid of the “feminist” label. "That's such a strange thing to say, isn't it? Like, what do you mean? Do you not believe in equality for men and women?...

Manuel here catching up on a female-helmed, female-centered film coming our way in 2015 (one hopes!).
Have you guys heard about Miss You Already? The pic starting shooting in London just this past month and it stars none other than Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette. The film is directed by Catherine Hardwicke, whose filmography seems endlessly baffling to me: Thirteen (2003), Lords of Dogtown (2005), Nativity Story (2006), Twilight (2008), Red Riding Hood (2011), and something called Plush (2013; anyone seen it? IMDb tells me it stars Cam “Amos cookies” Gigandet). I mean, I know female directors have a hard time getting passion (or any other kind of) projects made, but can someone explain to me this set of films? I guess one could make a thorough-line about Hardwicke’s interest in young women’s lives, which makes Miss You Already an interesting departure.
The film centers on Milly and Jess “who have been best friends since childhood.

With Joe Carnahan‘s latest film, Stretch, Blumhouse is hoping to do for action what the production company has done for horror: make a project with low risk, high reward. Their movies cost peanuts compared to most major releases. If they make a hit, it’s a major success. If they put out a bomb, nobody is going to the poorhouse. It’s a great business model that’s mostly been used for horror movies. They’ve stepped outside of their wheelhouse every now and then, to mixed results. For example, Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush was a melodramatic rock ‘n’ roll sex thriller that, despite being Hardwicke’s most fun movie in a years, went unnoticed. Hopefully that won’t be the case for Stretch. The film was originally going to be released by Universal back in March, but they dropped the picture two months before its scheduled debut. The studio was unwilling dish out the money...

"The Grey" and "Smokin Aces" director Joe Carnahan's controversial new drama "Stretch" was pulled from the release calendar a while back with many wondering when we will ever get to see it.
The story stars Patrick Wilson as a chauffeur whose new ride is a devious billionaire (Chris Pine). Their night together leads to increasingly dangerous encounters. Jessica Alba, Brooklyn Decker, Ed Helms, and Ray Liotta also star.
Universal had planned a wide release but essentially dropped the movie soon after scheduling it. The film's producer Jason Blum has now spoken about the release date incident and says there is a chance it could end up at Toronto this year. He tells Collider:
"What happened with it was that all of the movies that we make, we don't announce and date them wide until they're finished. We got ahead of ourselves with Stretch and dated the movie.

Re-Making the Band: Lovemaking and Recording Sessions with a Killer Fanboy

Catherine Hardwicke is insane. This isn't a dig. It's a fact. Like the sky is blue and water is wet. The director of "Thirteen" and the first "Twilight" has a delightfully off-kilter aura that is positively infectious. After helping to create that blockbuster franchise (and, honestly, what would those movies be without her casting?), she directed a big studio movie for Warner Bros. ("Red Riding Hood") before going back to what she does best: dramatize the lives of young people on the edge. The result? "Plush," which after a brief theatrical run is out on DVD this week. "Plush" is a psychosexual thriller with elements of both modern melodrama and, of all things, rock musicals, starring Emily Browning ("Sucker Punch") and produced by Jason Blum ("Paranormal Activity"). It concerns a rock star named Hayley (Browning) whose co-lead-singer brother dies from a drug overdose and whose replacement, Enzo (Xavier Samuel), could...

Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush only had a very limited theatrical release in September, but the movie is now available for everyone to watch on DVD and video on demand. It’s a tale of obsession, creativity, and what the combination of the two can do when someone has a dark, twisted past.
In Plush, Haley (Emily Browning) is dealing with the loss of her brother and her bandmate due to a drug overdose. Despite this, the band stays together with the addition of Enzo (Xavier Samuel), a guitarist and huge fan of the band’s early work. Unfortunately, their new album is a critical flop, and in an effort to spark her creativity, Haley gets involved sexually with Enzo, even though she has a husband (Cam Gigandet) and two kids at home. When Enzo begins spending time with her family, Haley realizes she may be in deeper than she can handle.

Moviefone's Top DVD of the Week:
"Pacific Rim"
What's It About? Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi adventure follows the rise of the Kaiju sea creatures, which threaten the future of mankind. In order to fight off the monstrous Kaiju, Jaeger robots are developed, which are controlled by two pilots who share a mental bond. In the face of an apocalypse, former pilot Raleigh (Charlie Hunnam) and trainee Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) are paired up to drive a Jaeger to save the planet.
Why We're In: Del Toro's sci-fi epic is great for every minute of its CGI spectacle ass-kicking. "Pacific Rim" was not only one of the most fun adventures of the summer, but it also featured solid performances from its two leads, along with Idris Elba. If you're looking for an action-packed film that will keep your eyes and ears entertained from start to finish, "Pacific Rim" is sure to please.

Many brilliant artists have also been somewhat mentally unstable. Whether it be writers, painters, or musicians, it seems that sometimes the most incredibly creative people are also the ones with the deepest problems. Catherine Hardwicke’s Plush shows that sometimes the eccentricities of an artist move beyond harmless quirks and into full-blown, dangerous obsession.

Catherine Hardwicke On Her Kinky, Twisted Thriller 'Plush' and Why She Considers 'Twilight' an Indie
Catherine Hardwicke often speaks with the giddy, impassioned verve of a teenager. She takes great breaths in her speech in order to emphasize ideas, and to help you feel the way she feels about them. Given Hardwicke's filmography, such a disposition seems only natural. It's easy to see the themes and characters that attract the director. Since her searing, achingly raw breakout, “Thirteen,” Hardwicke has gravitated toward the filmic translation of adolescence, rebellion, rock, and angst, preferably channeled through a young female protagonist. Hardwicke is also, of course, the helmer of the first “Twilight” movie, which she says she personally regards as an “indie film,” as well as “The Nativity Story,” which gave us Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) as the original pregnant teen. Bouncing back from the slump that was “Red Riding Hood,” Hardwicke returns this season with “Plush,” a twisty music-world thriller that's loaded with gonzo and kinky elements, all...

With the announcement of a Harry Potter spin-off film coming in the form of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, some have been wondering what other supposedly-dead franchises might be primed for a spin-off film. One franchise that I’m sure its fans would want more of is Twilight, and today, while talking to Catherine Hardwicke about her new film Plush, I had the opportunity to ask her about the possibility.
While it isn’t in the works just yet, Hardwicke said that she isn’t ruling out the possibility of a spin-off and is definitely interested if author Stephenie Meyer has an idea for it.
Again, this isn’t happening right now, and it isn’t likely to happen any time soon, but it’s still fun to speculate on. When I asked Hardwicke if she would consider the possibility, here’s what she said:

It may be Friday the 13th, but not everything today is about masked serial killers who keep resurrecting no matter how many times you kill them. Sometimes the threat is a bit more realistic, as is the case in the new thriller Plush, hitting select theaters today. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Lords of Dogtown, Twilight) and produced by Jason Blum (Insidious, Sinister), Plush is about the lead singer (Emily Browning) of a rock band who develops a relationship with her new guitarist (Xavier Samuel), only to soon discover that he has a troubled past and bringing him into her life may have fatal consequences. We've got an exclusive clip from the film, and in it you can see the early stages of that tension just bubbling beneath the surface. And if you'd like to see...

The first five minutes of "Plush," the new musical murder mystery from Catherine Hardwicke (who started the "Twilight" franchise with a bang, before getting shoved to the side for a succession of anonymous filmmakers), are misleading in a pretty profound way. In this introductory sequence, an unseen figure ties a young woman to a chair. She is gagged and helpless, although her positioning and the slick vinyl restraints suggest something even kinkier. The shadowy figure dumps a whole truckload of rocks on top of her while she's bound, suffocating her under the stones. Bright lights illuminate the ghastly tableau. This is like something out of a "Saw" sequel, especially since nothing even remotely spooky happens for the next 45 minutes. Torture porn, it's not. It's understandable why the filmmakers (Hardwicke and "Paranormal Activity" producer Jason Blum) would begin the film this way. It's pretty grabby and there's a great gag involving the film's title,...

If you saw the previous Red Band trailer for Catherine Hardwicke’s “Plush”, you thought it was about Emily Browning getting her bondage on with a Goth dude in every place (and position) possible. This new trailer, though, takes a more generic approach to selling the film. It’s concentrating on the film’s more thriller angle, because apparently Browning’s character is also stalked while she’s engaging in wacky sex with her guitarist. It’s amazing to see just how different the two trailers are. Check it out, check it outers. Catherine Hardwicke has established herself as a specialist in young female protagonists who are teetering on the edge of ravines (metaphorical ones obviously, not the kind James Franco fell down in 127 Hours). They've been filled with sexy vampires, drugs, big bad wolves and, in the case of her new psychodrama Plush, creepy obsessives with an alarming disregard for personal boundaries. The movie's new trailer gives a taste of what to expect. The star of the show - in every sense - is up-and-coming rocker Hayley (Emily Browning). She's a married mum whose relationship with husband Cam Gigandet is threatened when her brother and band mate dies of a drug overdose and his replacement as the band's guitarist, Enzo (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse's Xavier Samuel), turns up with mystery, handsomeness and hot guitar riffs in tow. Her world is swiftly is turned upside down, and becomes... hell, we're just going...

For her follow-up to the first "Twilight" movie, director Catherine Hardwicke didn't stray too far from the paranormal romance genre with "Red Riding Hood." Since that movie was — let's call it — less than successful, it comes as no surprising that Hardwicke is going in a different direction for her next movie. But she's hanging onto the love triangle.
"Plush," her new film starring Emily Browning and "Twilight" baddie Cam Gigandet, just debuted its first trailer, giving us a look at Hardwicke's twisted take on the world of rock and roll.
In the film, which hits theaters this week and debuts on DVD next month, Browning plays a rocker that faces the challenges of producing another hit. Things get even more complicated when she hires a sexy new guitarist and begins to get mysterious packages from an apparently obsessed fan.

Back in 2003, Catherine Hardwicke made her directorial debut with the enjoyably trashy teens-in-turmoil drama Thirteen. Ten years later, she appears to be giving us an epilogue to that film with the rock star stalker thriller Plush, which could realistically be where Evan Rachel Wood.s character Tracy ended up following the events of Hardwicke's earlier film. This could just be wishful thinking on my part, because as is, I think this trailer, courtesy of iTunes Movie Trailers looks like a complete piece of eyeliner-laden junk. I know there are probably a score of 14-to-24-year-old people who are amped up for this, but how is this supposed to appeal to wide audiences? On its face, I have nothing against the film.s story, which follows Emily Browning as Hayley, lead singer of the rock band Plush, whose debut album cemented them as the hot new act. Though most of us first met Emily Browning as the cute young lady in the family-friendly Lemony Snicket movie, in more recent years she’s grown up quite a bit, and has now become known for taking edgier, more adult roles. That’s a nice way of saying that she got hot, real hot, and she’s been taking advantage of her hotness by starring in sex-soaked exploitation fare like Sucker Punch and Sleeping Beauty. Like chocolate and peanut butter, Emily Browning and sexual overtones just seem to go together well, so the actress looks to be keeping the ball rolling with her next film, Plush, which sees her starring as a sexy young rock star who’s being seduced over to the dark side by a swarthy lothario. Already we’ve seen a red band teaser for the film that was little more than a bunch of sexy imagery set to a song, but...

The gorgeous Emily Browning -below ('Sucker Punch', 'Sleeping Beauty') stars as a troubled rock singer who dabbles in the usual occupational hazards that includes binge drinking, drug abuse and all sorts of sexual depravity. Xavier Samuel ('Bait'), Dawn Olivieri ('The Vampire Diaries') and Cam Gigandet ('The Unborn') also star. Check out the new trailer below and draw your own conclusions....
