Roskino and Russian Cinema are joining forces for the first time to present companies in the Russian Pavilion at the forthcoming Marché du Film in Cannes.
In previous years, the two promotional platforms – Russian Cinema financed by the Russian Cinema Fund (Rcf) and Roskino by the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Culture – had operated from separate locations in Cannes.
And at the Berlinale’s European Film Market, Russian Cinema has had a stand in the Martin Gropius Bau, while Roskino was based on the first floor of the Marriott Hotel.
At a press conference in Moscow, Rcf executive director Anton Malyshev spoke about the reasoning behind the decision to organise a united stand and pointed to the “necessity for optimisation of expenditure” and the fact that the available resources were limited this year. Although the financing from the state had not been formally cut, the weakening of the Russian rouble vis-a-vis the Us dollar had put the...

China will continue to be the big box-office focus internationally in 2015, but the importance of other key markets can’t be discounted. Among them, Korea, Russia and Brazil remain hugely significant territories for the studios, while nations such as Malaysia and Venezuela are on the rise — and present their own challenges. China has expansive growth, a massive population and throws off huge grosses every time a Hollywood movie gets in under the quota system — and it keeps hurtling forward. Leaving aside the big dragon in the room, I looked at these other key markets that have been experiencing their own shifts, good and bad. Here’s a snapshot of how they fared this year and what we can expect up ahead:
Brazil
A funny thing happened to Brazil in 2014: the World Cup helped the box office. Although the national team advanced all the way to the third-place match, people still went to the movies.

Wannabe presidential candidate Ivan Okhlobystin tells Novosibirsk audience that gay people should be burned alive
A Russian actor best known for announcing a run for his country's presidency two years ago has stated that he would like to put all gay people "in the oven".
Ivan Okhlobystin, a popular star with fiercely conservative views, told an audience in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk that all homosexuals should be burned alive. According to the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, in comments translated by the Hollywood Reporter, Okhlobystin also compared homosexuality with fascism.
"I would put all the gays alive into an oven," the one-time Orthodox priest has been quoted as saying. "This is Sodom and Gomorrah! As a religious person, I cannot be indifferent about it because it is a real threat to my children!"
Okhlobystin later tweeted to confirm his comments. "The meaning was rendered correctly," he said. "Everyone has the right to express their opinions.

Sometimes a combination comes along that changes the way you look at something forever. Artist Ralph Sevelius tells a very convincing rendition of Star Wars using only seven character portraits. Send the kids to Frozen and the adults to Homefront for a satisfying holiday weekend, says People's critic. Here's what to see and what to skip in movie theaters this Thanksgiving. See ThisFrozenA cast packed with Broadway vets delivers a Snow Queen update that should charm kids and adults alike. Girls are front and center in this Disney showcase, featuring sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), who are incredibly close until Elsa realizes that she can't control her magic freezing powers. A long estrangement is punctuated by bombastic songs that, while beautifully sung, tend to wear themselves out.

You probably know Kristen Bell best as the titular character of Veronica Mars — soon to be a feature film — or for her current TV role on Showtime's House of Lies. That will change on November 27 when she sings her way into your heart as Anna in Disney's animated Frozen, which is based on the fairy tale The Snow Queen. In Frozen, there are two princesses of Arendelle: Anna and her older sister Elsa, who is soon to be queen and has cryokinetic powers (the ability to make tools, weapons etc. out of ice). When the Snow Queen's powers get out of hand and she goes into self-exile, Anna sets off on a journey to bring her sister back from the brink and save their kingdom. We sat down with the 33-year-old Bell...
