Mel's apartment includes a recording by Djanav Zengror, a versatile musician and leader in Taiwan's indigenous Paiwan community. Yi-An Chen (Mel), in addition to being an actor, violinist, pianist, singer and dancer, is also a scholar of Paiwan musical culture.
All characters seen in the film are approximately 27 years old-the age of the composer when the music was written.
Mel's furnishings are unremarkable and her sensual pleasures are inexpensive: a beach wrap, tea, candles, framed prints, a modest library. Her apartment is just far enough above the street to change the rhythm of her day.
In addition to pianist Chung Hua Weng, who recorded the soundtrack, four people on set could play the rondo movement from memory.
Images seen in Mel's apartment include photographs from A T Beaune's 'Taiwan Photowalk' and, more prominently, images from Gustav Klimt's 'Beethoven Frieze.'
