- The members of New Directions compete to become the next star of the Glee Club, and a fresh crop of students is introduced.
- Open with Rachel in Dance 101 class at NYADA. Her instructor, Cassandra July, is a tough one, particularly on Rachel.
Jacob tells us what's been going on at McKinley. The New Directions are now popular, sitting with the Cheerios at lunch. Tina has broken up with Mike. The biggest question seems to be who will be the "next Rachel" between Blaine, Tina, and Brittany.
Rachel meets an attractive junior named Brody who is a junior in the same major. He helps Rachel feel better about being a freshman at NYADA. Brody has played a small role on Broadway and says Cassie's recommendation was what got him the part.
Kurt drops by McKinley and meets Sue's new baby, as well as Sue's new top Cheerio, Kitty. Kurt is a few weeks away from starting class at community college.
Auditions for New Directions are beginning. Beforehand Will introduces Unique as an official new member. The kids tell him about the competition to be the new Rachel. Unique wants in on the competition.
The four Rachel wannabes perform Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" for Artie, with the idea being that he will pick a winner and they will tell Will their decision.
Kurt is working at a coffee shop in town. He tells Blaine and Brittany that he's planning on taking part in auditions. Kurt seems a little worried it's pathetic that he's still hanging around.
We see Cassie's former TA tell her that he's leaving for a small Broadway part. He credits her recommendations for landing him the role. We see Cassie make herself an alcoholic drink.
A sophomore named Marley drops by the Glee kids table at lunch and says she's planning on trying out. Sam tells Unique not to wear his make-up during school, worried that it will ruin their recent elevation to cool status. Kitty and two football players begins making fun of an obese lunch woman. Grudgingly, Artie participates. Marley sees this from a nearby table.
We learn that the lunch woman is Marley's mother.
Rachel tells Cassie she smells booze on her breath. This leads to Cassie showing everybody she still has it, performing a dance number to a mash-up of Lady Gaga's "Americano" and Jennifer Lopez's "Dance Again."
Auditions begin. Several are terrible, but a kid named Jake takes the stage and is impressive when he sings "Never Say Never" by The Fray. But he loses his temper when Will tells him he's heard enough, knocking over a music stand and refusing to pick it up.
Tibideaux introduces the freshman to the first of two chances they will have to sing publically during their first year. The second will come during a winter concert, but only based on invitation. The first girl gets up and is quickly stopped by Tibideaux, who cuts her on the spot. Rachel is next. She sings "New York State of Mind" by Billy Joel, and we are cut back and forth between Rachel and Marley, who is singing the same song for her New Directions audition. Both perform very well.
Marley sees that she's been added to New Directions, the only new member this year. Jake is furious not to see his name on the list.
Marley tells her mother about the kids making fun of her. Apparently at their last school, Marley didn't have any friends because her mother was the lunch lady.
Blaine tells Kurt he thinks it's important that he leave for New York. He thinks Kurt is "stuck." Blaine sings "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons.
At lunch the next day Marley interrupts the cool kids when they make fun of her mother, admitting their relationship.
Rachel tells Brody about Finn. She's still having trouble fitting in and he gives her some good advice, saying it's just because she's changing. They take a picture together and it seems to help Rachel.
At the next class Rachel promises Cassie she'll keep getting better until she's the best student Cassie's ever had. Cassie's not impressed.
Burt drops Kurt off at the airport, convincing him the best thing for him is to go to New York and struggle for awhile. Kurt is scared, but seems to agree.
The entire Glee club comes to Marley as a group and apologizes for making fun of her mother. Marley and Unique are too much for the cool kids, who drop New Directions back to their old status as losers.
Will brings Jake into his office. It turns out he's Puck's half brother, although Puck has no idea. Will says he think Glee club would do him good like it did Puck, but he needs to lose the chip on his shoulder. Jake says he's not going to change who he is and leaves.
The whole club sings Adele's "Chasing Pavements."
Rachel calls Kurt crying, saying she misses him and "everything." He surprises her by being right behind her and suggests she get a new roommate.
