Lalo Schifrin has been writing movie and TV music for 60 years, including such iconic themes as “Mission: Impossible,” “Dirty Harry” and “Cool Hand Luke.” And while he has been nominated for six Oscars, he’s never won.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will rectify that oversight when it awards him an Honorary Oscar for his entire career at the 10th annual Governors Awards on Nov. 18 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.
Schifrin is the third composer in Academy history to receive such an award. Alex North was voted one in 1985, Ennio Morricone another in 2006.
“It’s a great honor, and an incredible surprise,” says the Argentine-born composer, now 86. His numbers alone are staggering: more than 100 film scores, nearly 90 television projects and more than 50 classical works since the late 1950s. He’s also won four Grammys and received four Emmy nominations.
“Lalo is a model film composer,” says Academy music governor Laura Karpman.

Mercedes Ruehl is set to co-star opposite Steve Coogan and Carla Gugino in David Shore’s ABC legal drama pilot Doubt. The project, from Sony TV, centers on Vincent (Coogan), a former cop who’s now a cunning but charming low-rent lawyer using his street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons and wooing his ex-wife Linda (Gugino). Oscar and Tony winner Ruehl, repped by Frontline Management and Innovative, will play Mrs. Syn Newman, a lawyer who works (and constantly bickers) with his husband (John Pankow) in offices they rent from Vince. Though frequently exasperated by Vincent, she also considers him a son and her frustration with him never dampens her desire to fight alongside him. Doubt reunites Ruehl with Sony TV after starring in the studio’s Fox comedy pilot El Jefe last season. She guest stars in the episode of TNT’s...

For fans of Community, it's been one dark timeline. The most brilliantly warped comedy of our era has never exactly racked up big ratings, despite its hardcore fan following. Dan Harmon, Community's madman auteur, got the axe last May. NBC scheduled the new season premiere for October, then abruptly put it on hiatus. And oh yeah – Chevy Chase quit.
Video: 'Community' Cast Gets Senioritis
But at long last, Community returns to Thursday nights starting February 7th, with two new showrunners: veteran comedy writers/producers David Guarascio and Moses Port.
