When Lily and Bohannon take a second train to meet up with Durant's train, it appears that the second train was backed all the way from Hell on Wheels. This would have been unnecessary because many trains reversed direction between the end of track and east toward Omaha. There must have been a wye constructed at Hell on Wheels to reverse the trains.
Remember that Hell on Wheels isn't a geographical location. It moves according to the track laid. A train can just as easily go in reverse as forward and building in a "Y" every few miles would take up valuable time.

The exterior length and window pattern of Durant's private railroad car do not match the interior layouts shown. The viewer sees a bedroom, on one end of the car, and Durrant's office on the other end of the car, both with exterior access. What is not shown are toilet facilities, a kitchen, and storage (i.e. for the tub) which would have made the car much larger.
The benches in the rail car are built with Phillips head screws which weren't patented until 1933 by John P. Thompson, over 60 years after the time of the railroad's construction.
