Gordon Pinsent, the adored Canadian actor whose career hit its peak well into his 70s with an award-winning performance as the heartbroken husband in “Away From Her”, has died.
Pinset died on Saturday evening at age 92, his friend actor Mark Critch confirmed.
The Newfoundland native, a household name in Canada for decades after his many appearances on stage and screen, became known internationally after his Genie Award-winning turn as Grant in Sarah Polley’s acclaimed directorial debut.
His dignified portrayal so impressed Daniel Day-Lewis, who went on to win the best actor Oscar in 2008 for “There Will Be Blood,” that he sent an email to Polley praising Pinsent’s performance as one of the most “astonishing” he’d ever seen.

Ava DuVernay’s Array Releasing has dropped the first trailer and poster image for Deepa Mehta’s “Funny Boy.”
On Thursday, “Funny Boy” was announced as Canada’s entry to the 2021 Oscars, in the international feature film category.
The film is based on the best-selling 1994 coming-of-age novel by Canadian-Sri Lankan author Shyam Selvadurai that won the Lambda Literary Award for gay fiction. Mehta co-wrote the screenplay with Selvadurai.
Shot on location and set in Sri Lanka in the 1970s and 1980s, “Funny Boy” explores the sexual awakening of a young boy named Arjie (portrayed by Arush Nand and Brandon Ingram). As political tensions escalate to a boiling point between the minority Tamils and the majority Sinhalese, a young boy comes of age in a society and family that doesn’t embrace difference outside of societal norms. The film chronicles Arjie’s struggle to find balance and self-love despite the absence of empathy and understanding.

While Canadians are days away from hitting the polls to determine the next government, Chloé Robichaud, the filmmaker who broke out with her Cannes Un Certain Regard selected Sarah Prefers to Run is trading the athletic podium for….the political one. Among the new generation of French Canadian female filmmakers, her sophomore effort entitled Pays has its cast in place and is ready to roll. First-timer Nathalie Doummar is joined by Macha Grenon, Yves Jacques, Rémy Girard and Alexandre Landry (Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle) are among those to join the project. Xavier Dolan tied contemporaries Philippe Falardeau and Denis Villeneuve by winning his second Best Feature award at the 17th annual Jutra Awards. Quebec’s answer to the Oscars was a rather suspense-less affair as Mommy claimed nine (plus the top box office award honor) awards winning in all major categories with the exclusion of Best Supporting Actor category win, which would only end up going to Dolan’s other nominated film, Tom at the Farm. Pierre-Yves Cardinal was sublime in his predatory type role and as was the case for several nominees, was hard at work on another project and therefore not on hand for trophyware. Ricardo Trogi’s throwback to awkward teen years tale 1987 did win a trio of awards, but if there were any surprises in the Dolan camp it was the acceptance speeches: Dolan delivered a keynote speech type quality for the last win of the night...

In 2014 an actor previously best known for being seven down the cast list in a cult TV sitcom rose to become the star of two of the year’s biggest blockbusters. This time last year Chris Pratt was about as far from a household name as Guardians Of The Galaxy or The Lego Movie were from being sure things at the box office. One year later and the two films have made over a billion dollars between them and Pratt looks like a leading man with genuine star quality. His lead role in this year’s Jurassic World looks set to cement his newfound status as a bona fide Hollywood star.
It sounds like a simple process, but in reality a lot of actors have been poised on the brink of stardom with multiple big movies due for release only to find the movies flop and their careers worse off than before.

Canada has a wealth of cinematic talent, and always has. From our comedic genius to our often cerebral approach to filmmaking, this country has a lot to be proud of.
Of late, and especially this year, Canada has really dominated the movies landscape. Our homegrown actors (Sarah Gadon, for example) and directors (Xavier Dolan, "Mommy") have been everywhere, earning accolades around the world. Movies shot within our borders have won rave reviews and received praise from the highest-ranked critics and film festivals.
Perhaps most outstanding is our growth. No longer are we satisfied with melancholic snow landscapes (though sometimes those still appear); we've branched out, and we're trying new things. Here, in no particular order, are my favourite Canadian movies and moments of 2014.

Set in Newfoundland (even though some of the accents veer towards bad Irish at times), The Grand Seduction, based on the 2003 French/Canadian film La Grande Séduction, sees a small fishing village of lovable, unemployed rogues, led by Murray French (Brendan Gleeson), desperately wooing an oil company looking for a place to build their new 'repurposing' factory. To seal the deal they need a doctor, and when plastic surgeon Dr. Paul Lewis (Taylor Kitsch) is sent to the village, Tickle Head, for a month, in exchange for the dropping of a drug possession charge, where the residents attempt to tailor the small community to his needs, and thus convince him to stay. The Grand Seduction is a charming farce when you get down to it. The gentle humour is perfectly pitched, providing plenty of chuckles and laughs as the residents of Tickle Head set their plan into the motion, be it quickly learning,...

Only ten years have passed since Canadian comedy Seducing Doctor Lewis was released, and yet now comes a remake in the form of Don McKellar’s The Grand Seduction. It’s not the first time that a screenplay by Ken Scott has been recomposed for a more luminous cast, having been the man behind Starbuck – and then its Vince Vaughn reimagining, Delivery Man. Sadly, this is also not the first time that such an endeavour has seemed somewhat superfluous.
Set in the intimate harbour of Tickle cove, we shine a light over a washed up society, struggling to make ends meet as the residents all collect their welfare cheques, with so few job opportunities available to them. However when a new factory is proposed to the locals, they realise that for it to become a reality, they need to have a doctor – and so when Dr. Lewis (Taylor Kitsch) arrives for a month,...

Brendan Gleeson is perfectly cast in The Grand Seduction, a comedy drama that aims to send up the postcard image of rural life. Unfortunately, Canadian director Don McKellar falls into his own trap with a storytelling style that wavers between wry cynicism and twee romanticism.
American muscle-head Taylor Kitsch (Battleship, John Carter) loses some of that action hero bulk to play Dr Paul Lewis, but he still looks out of place in a small fishing village where he is forced to act as Gp after getting caught with cocaine at customs. Just the name, Tickle Cove, is enough to conjure a picture of seaside tranquillity, but on the contrary, the fishing business has dried up and its residents need to find an alternative source of revenue...

Based on its bold title, you would be forgiven for thinking The Grand Seduction, a new comedy starring stalwart actor Brendan Gleeson, is an epic and complex drama comedy. It is in fact quite the opposite; a simmering small-town affair, that leaves you with a smile and a small warmness in your heart.Gleeson is Murray, a resident of the small populace of the harbor town Tickle Cove, Newfoundland. Here in one of the Canadian maritime provinces, humble lives are led but work is dry; every adult collects their stipend from the government, content but unhappy. Industry considers the town, and although the environmental and ethical impacts of a factory implementation are overlooked, one thing is clear; the town needs it. To secure jobs at the...

Returning behind the camera for the first time in almost a decade, Don McKellar took The Grand Seduction to Tiff last year, where it was received with warm reviews.

What do you do if you’re the mayor of a small town in the grip of an economic downturn and you need to attract new investment? Why, you concoct a big, good-natured scam, of course! That, at least, seems to be the lesson in Don McKellar’s new film, The Grand Seduction, which has posted its first trailer online. Brendan Gleeson stars as Murray, a fisherman from the small harbour town of Tickle Head who is forced to live on welfare when resources dry up. Prohibited from fishing enough to make a living and with the community spirit having faded a long time ago, the Mayor comes up with a dazzling plan: a giant corporation need a location to build a factory and he thinks that Tickle Head could be just the place. But there’s just one problem: in order to qualify, they must have a doctor in residence.

Robust fishermen in black slickers tread rocky, winding paths to the coast. Yellow lanterns warm their bearded faces in the dark morning. The Grand Seduction’s emboldening start honors the stalwarts of small, industrious, frontier communities. A spirited turn closes the sequence. When night descends, the howls of lovemaking ring through the town, as the pride in a strenuous day’s labor is fully supped. If only this clever, amusing tone was more consistent.

The Grand Seduction
Starring Brendan Gleeson, Taylor Kitsch, Liane Balaban, Gordon Pinsent, Mark Critch
Directed by Don McKellar
Written by Michael Dowse and Ken Scott
Canada, 2014
One has to acquire a taste for eccentric dramedies that are populated by infectious quirky characters, a far-fetching premise, gentle-minded absurdity and an appreciation for the small-scale cinema experience to embrace the giddy gumption of director Don McKellar’s odd yet highly-spirited The Grand Seduction. Breezy, mildly confusing and charmingly off-kilter The Grand Seduction is an English-language Canadian film that tickles the funnybone in its cheeky conviction detailing the desperate economical times of a financially-strapped Newfoundland fishing village.
Now American television audiences in particular may inevitably view the witty Seduction as a knockoff to the critically-acclaimed early 1990′s series Northern Exposure where the off-base, fish-out-of-the-water quirks and kooky culture shock of revolving personalities co-existing in a quaint scenic hamlet may seem grudgingly familiar. Don McKellar’s “The Grand Seduction,” a love letter to the simpler things in life, is more charming than seductive thanks to the immediate expiry date of its emotional potency, but it’s a thrifty little film perfectly suited for family movie night. Location has become such a diminutive aspect in the most successful films these days, with global centerfold cities like New York, L.A., London, Toronto, Paris and Tokyo reshuffled so much that they’ve all just merged into The Big Urban City. This has led to more and more filmmakers who stopped caring to explain why films are set in a particular place. In this way, the most alluring aspect of “The Grand Seduction” isn’t its compact population of 120 twee folk but rather the actual small harbor of Tickle Cove in Newfoundland where the story is set and the seduction takes place. Also at play here is Taylor Kitsch’s career,...

Angelina Jolie and her threatening cheekbones face off against Seth MacFarlane and his (somewhat equally threatening) comedy empire this weekend as Disney’s Maleficent debuts against Universal’s A Million Ways to Die in the West.
MacFarlane’s Ted might have been the highest-grossing R-rated comedy of all time, but in this genre duel, much like his character in A Million Ways, MacFarlane will wither in the face of Disney’s scorned and vengeful fairy. That has nothing to do with the lifetime prospects of MacFarlane’s sophomore effort, of course. Comedies tend to open modestly — especially original ones. But...

In "The Grand Seduction," Taylor Kitsch's character Dr. Paul Lewis is a big-city doctor ultimately charmed by the quaint lifestyle that a tiny Newfoundland fishing community offers. And as it turns out, Kitsch felt much the same way about shooting director Don McKellar's relatively small Canadian production; on the heels of two high-profile Hollywood action movies in "Battleship" and "John Carter," "The Grand Seduction" allowed him to leave 15-hour days and green screen behind for a few weeks by the water and (of course) daily fly fishing.
The fact that he'd be starring alongside Brendan Gleeson in the English-language remake of Jean-Francois Pouliot's 2003 Quebecois hit "Seducing Dr. Lewis" didn't hurt either, according to the B.C. native. So there were no elaborate tricks required to get Kitsch to sign on, unlike the little white lies the town uses to keep Lewis around, like faking a love of cricket...

For awhile, the spectacular flop that was John Carter seemed the yardstick by which all other flops would be measured. A huge, multi-million dollar film chock full of CGI that was intended to spawn at least one sequel, if not a full franchise, its collapse at the box office was epic and thorough, prompting extensive examination of just what went wrong. In the midst of the furor was star Taylor Kitsch, whose attempts to make a name for himself in Hollywood have been met with failed film after failed film.
But Kitsch is still going strong, despite John Carter, Battleship, and Savages. He’s currently appearing in HBO drama The Normal Heart, and returns to his native Canada in miniseries The Grand Seduction. But there’s still a place in his heart for John Carter, and what might have been, as he tells Variety. Here’s what he said about...

Out talking about his roles in both HBO's "The Normal Heart" and the upcoming limited release "The Grand Seduction," actor Taylor Kitsch briefly talked about "John Carter" and the film's proposed sequel which was nixed after the costly first film bombed.
He tells Variety:
"I know the second script was fucking awesome. We had to plant a grounding, so we could really take off in the second one. The second one was even more emotionally taxing, which was awesome."
Kitsch also spoke about the failure of that film and "Battleship":
"It wasn't an uplifting experience. My biggest regret would have been if I didn't do enough personally. If I didn't give it everything I had. If I hadn't prepped enough. I don't have that regret, so that allows me to let go."...

Spare a thought for Taylor Kitsch, people. Two years after “John Carter” bombed in ways we dissected at length, followed by the double whammy of “Battleship” and “Savages” also, um, underperforming, and he's still out there, working his way through serious projects. Our review of HBO's AIDS drama “The Normal Heart” finds him one of the better things about it, and he also has Canadian mini-comedy “The Grand Seduction” coming up, where he stars alongside Brendan Gleeson (trailer here).Accordingly, he sat down with Variety to talk over his newest projects, which revealed that he hasn't overwhelmed himself with preparation for either of them – “I wish I'd seen it”, he says of the stage version of “The Normal Heart,” and “I had never heard of it or knew it existed” of the original, French-Canadian version of “The Grand Seduction”, which came out 10 years ago. But then again, dude went and sat down with Larry Kramer,...

But in The Grand Seduction, a remake of the 2003 French-Canadian film, Seducing Doctor Lewis, he plays a doctor who’s lured into spending a month with a tiny Newfoundland harbor village. The town needs to convince Kitsch’s Dr. Lewis to stay permanently so that a company will be encouraged to build a new factory nearby; Brendan Gleason plays the elder tasked with making the quaint hamlet everything Lewis ever wanted. The Grand Seduction is an oddly charmingly little comedy, but it feels like a tale from another era. Set in the homely harbor town of Tickle Cove, director Don McKellar attempted to make a feel good comedy about tiny white lies and humbling discoveries, but instead hones in an overly Hallmark and gimmicky breath of stale air that’s flat and weightless. I say that with a chagrin because Brendan Gleeson ranks among my favorite actors, but his witty cracks and stoic presence meant nothing while spearheading Tickle Cove’s devious plan to lock down a doctor for the long term. Again, McKellar’s film is a cutesy little story, but it’s also incredibly generic and fatally predictable – a heartwarming tale that forgets the heart.

Indiewire has an exclusive first look at the poster for the upcoming indie "The Grand Seduction," which stars Taylor Kitsch and Brendan Gleeson. Directed by Don McKellar and written by Michael Dowse and Ken Scott, "The Grand Seduction's" tagline states: "A lie this big only works if everyone pitches in." Sounds like trouble. Synopsis: A small fishing village must procure a local doctor to secure a lucrative business contract. When unlikely candidate and big city doctor Paul Lewis lands in their lap for a trial residence, the townsfolk rally together to charm him into staying. As the doctor’s time in the village winds to a close, acting mayor Murray French has no choice but to pull out all the stops and begin The Grand Seduction. Distributed by Entertainment One Films, "The Grand Seduction" will be released May 30th.
