Fighting Knight Riders
This is another entry in the under the radar series. This is Tecmo's second arcade beat em up entry, it first of course was "Ninja Gaiden". Yeah, I know having two arcade beat em ups isn't much from one of my favorite video game companies, but it's better than none and this game I thought was another solid entry in my book, it was also a nice find for me as I honestly never knew this game even existed at all.
The game was going for a fantasy theme which made sense as the game "Golden Axe" was a huge hit as it was one of the games that got the wheels in the beat em up genre going. The graphical presentation is what you would expect from Tecmo which is why it's solid because I wouldn't want it any other way.
I really like the design of the demons and their bosses who are all unique and you just got to see to believe from giant dog faced soldiers that look like the Moblins from "The Legend of Zelda", anamorphic Griffins, snake women, ogres, King Kong and a lot of other strange and crazy stuff that like I said you just must see to believe.
The gameplay is good. It's the basic controls of moving, jumping and the attack button, I wouldn't say you have a deep combo system which just like with the "Ninja Gaiden" arcade game is one drawback, but easy to get past with the fun you have. And of course, like in every fighting game there are some effective power ups and items to help you along the way. The music is good or decent, I wouldn't say there are many memorable tracks but good and decent entries that are a nice listen and fit the game.
There are a couple of things that make the game unique, for one thing the characters you control are small and the whole time are riding on the backs of giant creatures the whole time, which makes the game kind of a vehicular beat em up, sort of. You don't have to worry about being knocked off it as you stay permanently on it, however it doesn't put you in less danger as you still must fight to survive. You get to select from three of the creatures, a giant, tiger, and dragon. Each has strengths and weaknesses as well as a unique ability; which one you select is up to you depending on what feels right and is most handy in the current situation your in.
One of the other things which stands out, in fact stands out the most is the amount of blood and violence. Not to say every beat em up isn't violent because they are but they never reached this kind of magnitude at least at the time. It probably doesn't seem all that special or even shocking now but at the time it was let alone revolutionary. We see faces and bodies getting bloodied up, along with heads getting lobed off. It was cool to me but also it showed how videos games were starting to mature and take the next step, that it wasn't all kids business, though same can be said about a lot of the other beat em ups.
Overall, it's a solid beat em up, this is another B list classic that's worth a ride.
Rating: 3 stars.
