Stephen Colbert introduced a new segment on The Late Show on Monday night titled "Lyrics We Can Afford to Songs We Love." In the first installment, Green Day sang "Camptown Races" – written by the 19th century American songwriter Stephen Foster, and thus freely available in the public domain – over their 1997 hit, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)."
Green Day performed the song acoustically in the dressing room, with Billie Joe Armstrong strumming a guitar and Late Show bandleader Jon Batiste accompanying him. Colbert and Armstrong traded lead vocals, while Mike Dirnt...

Even as a novelty act, Alvin And The Chipmunks were pretty thin gruel. Created by Armenian-American songwriter (and Rear Window bit player) Ross Bagdasarian under the Anglicized pseudonym “David Seville,” the Chipmunks were a spin-off from Bagdasarian’s first big novelty hit, “Witch Doctor,” which featured Bagdasarian spouting gibberish at double speed in its chorus. After that song reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts, Bagdasarian figured he had a winning idea on his hands, and decided to repurpose the song’s high-pitched recording technique from kitschy racial stereotypes to cuddly anthropomorphism. Thus, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore and their manager/dad Dave—all voiced by Bagdasarian—were born.

As Porky Pig so famously put it, “Th-th-th-th-th-that’s all folks!”
Ok, not really. For the Idoloonie Nation, we haven’t even gotten to the thrilling parts of American Idol‘s farewell season — the live shows, where the red plastic husk of the jokesters and the delusional are tossed aside, and we get to binge on the delicious goudas and bries and provolones who comprise the Top 12. (Ok, sorry… that cheese metaphor went on a little too long, but it’s the inevitable result of snacking primarily on celery and carrots for the last two weeks.)

Washington, Jan 5: Kesha, who has entered rehab for eating disorder, has reportedly blamed American songwriter and her producer Dr. Luke for her condition, claiming that he made fun of her weight.
Insiders close to the 'Timber' hitmaker told TMZ.com that Luke had told her in 2012 that she looked like a "f***ing refrigerator" and those words had a big impact on her.
Sources asserted that Luke, who had signed Kesha when she was just 18, commented on the singer's weight after she gained a few pounds in her downtime after her 'Get Sleazy' tour ended.
Insiders added that Luke began calling her fat and urged her management.

In case you’re unaware, Columbia Records are currently pimping The Bob Dylan Complete Album Collection Vol. One which encompasses the entire official discography of this legendary American songwriter (random: best music documentary ever? Scorsese’s “No Direction Home” has to be up there). Its breadth is staggering including all of his 41 official albums, including 14 newly remastered titles plus a 2Cd compilation of songs not included on the original LPs, plus amazing artwork etc. It’s a Dylan lover’s wet dream (and as someone who already owns like half those records, this writer feels like buying it anyhow). So to commemorate and sell the event a bit more, Columbia has teamed with Interlude Media to create this insane multimedia video for Dylan’s landmark masterpiece pop song, “Like A Rolling Stone.” You kind of need to just watch it to experience it, as explaining it won’t do it justice a tad.

Solo, by William Boyd, is latest novel to follow in Ian Fleming's footsteps, which charts spy 'recklessly motivated by revenge'
We may have got James Bond slightly wrong. Yes, he is a prodigious drinker, heavy smoker and consummate killer, but when it comes to his womanising, the author of his new incarnation believes that the spy was more honourable than some think. "It seems to me he wants a relationship," said William Boyd. "It is not just casual sex."
Boyd was speaking at the launch of his new Bond book, Solo, at which he was asked who his favourite Bond girl was. "I'm not too keen on the expression 'Bond girl' because I think Bond has relationships with women," he said. Having said that, he named the character Honeychile Rider – "nothing to do with Ursula Andress playing her in the movie … I think she is a very interesting Bond woman".

The 44th annual Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony was full of star power that included Alison Krauss, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Nickelback, Petula Clark, Wiz Khalifa, Jordin Sparks and a video message from Bill Clinton.
Tyler, Perry, Mick Jones and Lou Gramm of Foreigner, Holly Knight, Jd Souther and Tony Hatch were inducted Thursday into the Songwriters Hall 2013 class in New York City.
John and writing partner Bernie Taupin received the Johnny Mercer award, and Sting kicked off the night with a performance of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Sting also called John and Taupin "my two heroes."
John, who was inducted into the Songwriters Hall in 1992, said songwriting is often taken for granted.

London — The structure is simple, the guitar riffs basic, the lyrics at best inane, but the Troggs' "Wild Thing" remains a garage rock classic more than 45 years after its release made The Troggs and lead singer Reg Presley international stars.
Presley, whose raunchy, suggestive voice powers this paean to teenage lust, died Monday after a year-long struggle with lung cancer that had forced him and the band into reluctant retirement, his agent Keith Altham announced on Facebook late Monday night. He was 71.
"My dear old pal Reg Presley of The Troggs died today," he said, calling Presley "one very real person in a sometimes very unreal world." He said the singer had suffered a number of strokes recently and died at his home in Andover (70 miles west of London) surrounded by his family and friends.

Actor-slash-everything-under-the-sun James Franco is at it once again. This time, it's him and Motown legend Smokey Robinson who've committed the "Crime."
Franco - who's just too unfocused artistic to allow himself to become pigeon-holed into one career path, k? - has given the music-loving community another of his precious gems by releasing this new song video, which is but part and parcel of Franco's bigger game: an Ep called "MotorCity" from his new band Daddy (with artist Tim O'Keefe), released to iTunes on Tuesday.
Like his last foray into the R&B universe, the video for this one is far too trippy to make sense of, so we won't bother trying to do so here. That's probably the blimey point anyway, right?
In Franco's words to Spin Magazine, this all came about because of one kismet-riddled plane ride.
"I had been listening to Motown everyday, talking to Tim O'Keefe about our project.
