It was reported last month that Kathryn Bigelow had dropped out of directing an adaptation of the apocalyptic David Koepp novel “Aurora” for Netflix as new film chief Dan Lin was starting his role. But one of Lin’s first green lights will reportedly be a different Bigelow film with a similarly apocalyptic bent.
According to a report in Puck, “The Hurt Locker” director Bigelow has been tapped to direct a thriller about the White House’s real-time response efforts to an incoming ballistic missile attack on American soil. The script for the film is written by Noah Oppenheim, and the project is expected to be formally announced when Netflix hosts its Upfronts presentation to advertisers next week.
Puck also reported that despite the green light, Bigelow was “visibly annoyed” in regards to notes from Lin asking for the film to cut its budget and length. The report adds that...

Exclusive: After having a busy month at the box-office with Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire and Abigail both opening, Dan Stevens is continuing to stay busy as he is set to join Lily James in the upcoming film inspired by the story of Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, from 20th Century Studios and Ethea Entertainment.
While it’s not entirely clear who Stevens will be playing, we’re told he’s set for the part of Herd’s business partner. The untitled feature goes into production this year.
Famously launching the online dating platform Bumble after co-founding and departing Tinder, Herd became one of the youngest self-made billionaires at age 31 when Bumble went public in 2021. While she stepped down as CEO last year, the app continues to be hugely popular amongst the single crowd.
Plot details for the film remain vague, as it’s said to be somewhat loosely inspired by Herd’s story.

Some reported that the clip was real. It was taken as a show of support for Israel by some online.

In a video that circulated on X Wednesday, Robert De Niro can be seen yelling at a crowd while Jesse Plemons looks on from the sidelines. The video, taken by an unknown outlooker, was reposted by several pro-Israel accounts that subtitled De Niro’s dialogue and began circulating it, claiming that De Niro was shouting at pro-Palestinian protestors and referring to the Israel-Hamas War that started Oct. 7.
But the veteran actor was actually rehearsing a new Netflix show on location, his representative Stan Rosenfield confirmed. “What was seen was erroneous reports of Robert De Niro supposedly yelling at a group of anti-Israeli protesters,” Rosenfield said.
“De Niro’s lines were 100% scripted,” said the rep. “The video was a small snippet from a rehearsal scene from the Netflix series ‘Zero Day’ which was being filmed on the streets of New York, April 27, where the character played by De Niro is confronting...

Nostalgia is a funny thing. From the unexpected resurgence of vinyl to modern-day flip phones, it’s pretty clear that the technical limitations of the past can often inspire the stylish trends of the future. One of my favorite examples of this is the ongoing analog horror craze, as I find it fascinating how many of the genre’s major creators appear to have been born after the decline of VHS tapes and eerie PSAs.
It’s almost like there’s a subconscious understanding that some stories are best told through fuzzy visuals and heavily compressed audio, which is why I appreciate flicks like Anthony Cousins’s Found Footage throwback Frogman, a cryptozoology-inspired scary movie that dares to incorporate lo-fi aesthetics into its storytelling during a time when most studios encourage filmmakers to make their projects look as generically slick and polished as possible. And if you also enjoyed Frogman...

This weeks 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Dan Stevens. Of course we all remember his first major foray onto our screens as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, and the untimely death of his character that had fans raging for his return.
But Hollywood called, and since then, Stevens has accrued a long list of credits, including Beauty and the Beast, I’m Your Man, Love, Death and Robots, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Welcome to Chippendales. Recently he voiced a character in the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron, and next up, his new film Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire will be in theaters March 29th.
In this episode, Stevens digs into his reasons for needing a Taylor Swift collab, why Elvis is top of his list of dream roles, and how shooting Godzilla x Kong in Australia came with plenty of real-live snakes and killer trees.

On March 4, major Hollywood crew unions began negotiating their health and pension benefits with studios and streamers, with Hollywood Teamsters head Lindsay Dougherty saying, “We will strike if we have to” during the talks. But some Los Angeles-area crewmembers say that, in the aftermath of the writers’ and actors’ walkouts in 2023, there doesn’t seem to be that much work to halt if their own stoppage is called.
Caught in a brutal industry contraction amid the demise of Peak TV, crewmembers describe an anemic return to production after the strikes, which is exacerbating problems for those who already had significantly fewer opportunities to work in 2023.
“There hasn’t been any real work,” says one location manager based in L.A., who didn’t work for seven and a half months during and after the strikes. “The industry is not back. What’s back is a few things that are doing...

Connie Britton — who was conspicuously missing from the American Horror Story reunion at Monday’s Emmy Awards, thereby forcing co-star Dylan McDermott to go it alone — is confirming that Mother Nature was behind her 11th hour vanishing act.

The limited series starring Robert De Niro has added five actors — Angela Bassett, Dan Stevens, Matthew Modine, Bill Camp and McKinley Belcher III — to its ensemble. Clark Gregg, Gaby Hoffmann and Mark Ivanir have also signed on for guest roles.
They join a cast headed by De Niro — in the first lead TV role of his career — that also features Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen and Connie Britton.
Zero Day stars De Niro as George Mullen, a popular but complicated former president who comes out of retirement to head a commission investigating a devastating cyberattack. The six-episode thriller comes from creators Eric Newman (Narcos, The Watcher), Noah Oppenheim (screenwriter of Jackie and former president of NBC News) and Michael S. Schmidt, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter. The series has begun filming in New York.

Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Dan Stevens (Legion), Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), Bill Camp (The Queen’s Gambit) and McKinley Belcher III (Ozark) are among the new cast revealed for Netflix’s Zero Day. The limited series will also feature Gaby Hoffman (Transparent), Clark Gregg (Painkiller) and Mark Ivanir (Away) in guest-starring roles.
Zero Day is in production in New York with Robert De Niro starring and executive producing.
Zero Day asks the question: How do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?
At the center of the narrative is De Niro’s Mullen, a popular but complicated figure who is yanked back from retirement to head up a commission investigating a global cyberattack.

Travis Bickle will not be singing the praises of Uber any time soon.
Online cinephiles did a collective double take this week as rumors began to circulate that Robert De Niro would be reprising his role from “Taxi Driver” in an upcoming Uber commercial that would air in the United Kingdom. Many were quick to point out that the character — who loses his sanity after his job as a taxi driver exposes him to the worst of humanity and is eventually radicalized to commit acts of violence due to his firsthand look at child prostitution — is not exactly a compelling spokesperson for the ride sharing industry.
It appeared to be a strange career move for De Niro — who has long been open about his interest in making a “Taxi Driver” sequel — and caught the attention of the film’s screenwriter, Paul Schrader.

Warner Bros has begun rounding out the cast for DC franchise resetter Superman: Legacy, studio co-chief Peter Safran has announced in a new piece with Vanity Fair, with Nathan Fillion (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), Isabela Merced (Madame Web) and Edi Gathegi (The Harder They Fall) coming aboard.

Hollywood is at a crossroads and the 160,000 actors that make up SAG-AFTRA are seemingly in the driver’s seat.
Will there be an actors strike, on top of the writers strike, which is in its ninth week? What happens if there are two strikes? Will SAG-AFTRA extend its negotiations with the studios and then strike? Or will they extend and strike a deal? Would an actors strike compound the pain across the entertainment industry that is already reeling from the writers strike?
Deadline revealed Wednesday that SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are considering extending negotiations until next week (July 7) or later. This also would make sense given that most of Hollywood will be out of town for a long holiday weekend.
In addition to these questions, there are dozens of rumors flying around on the picket lines and Beverly Hills lunch spots. There’s talk...

The head of the country’s largest labor union joined striking Writers Guild film and television writers at a rally on Monday outside the New York City offices of streaming giant Amazon and said the writers’ cause has the support of workers from across unionized labor.
“You are fighting for all of us,” Liz Shuler, president of the 12.5-million member AFL-CIO, told about 200 people in a block-long picket line facing Amazon’s East Coast headquarters in the Manhattan’s Hudson Yards development.
“Can you hear us, Jeff Bezos?” Shuler said, referencing Amazon’s CEO, from her spot on the curb in a towering glass and steel office park where Amazon’s corporate neighbors include Warner Bros Discovery, Wells Fargo and BlackRock.

Billy Ray and Todd Garner are back for Week 6 of the Writers Guild standoff on Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast. Click below to listen.
This week, our hosts look at what the seismic developments of the past week will mean. Hailing it as groundbreaking, the Directors Guild agreed tentatively to a deal, and will bring it to membership shortly. At the same time, about 48% of SAG-AFTRA members cast votes on whether to authorize an actors strike if a deal isn’t struck the month’s end, and an overwhelming 97.91% of those voting gave the guild a strike authorization. Armed with that resolve, the guild has just began negotiating with the AMPTP, while there’s still no progress on getting back to the table with the writers.

Six weeks into the writers strike, the early returns on summer studio films have been some of the best since Covid brought the exhibition business to a screeching halt. But if SAG-AFTRA members trade lines of dialogue for picket lines beginning July 1, the business might well look like pandemic redux.
The domestic box office is just getting back on its feet, nearing $4 billion for the year and coursing 30% ahead of the same January-to-early June period a year ago. Theatrical release dates have again become prized commodities worth millions of dollars in revenue and the grease for triggering movies’ downstream revenues. And theatrical has regained a spotlight stolen by streamers during the Covid shutdown.
But what happens to the lineup of summer and fall films and their release slots, film and TV production starts and carefully calibrated Emmy campaigns if there are no actors to promote their films and make new ones?...

Netflix’s Zero Day, Robert De Niro’s first scripted TV role, has shut down production amid the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America.
The six-episode drama is being directed and exec produced by Lesli Linka Glatter, who helms all the episodes. Glatter is also the president of the Directors Guild, which has already reached a tentative deal with the studios and streamers. The guild’s 19,000 members are now voting on whether to ratify the agreement with the AMPTP or reject the deal and send the DGA back to the bargaining table.
Sources say production on Zero Day started Monday on location in New York, where it was greeted with picketing members of the Writers Guild. Glatter, it’s worth noting, and the DGA secured its tentative deal with the AMPTP late Saturday night.
It’s unclear when production on the series is poised to resume as a strike by the actors union,...

The Netflix series “Zero Day,” which marks Robert De Niro’s first regular television role, has shut down production, Variety has learned from sources.
The series had recently begun production in New York but is now on hold amid the ongoing writers’ strike. There is currently no set date for work to resume on the show.
Netflix declined to comment.
Variety exclusively reported that the show was ordered to series at Netflix back in March. Per the official logline, “Zero Day” “asks the question on everyone’s mind — how do we find truth in a world in crisis, one seemingly being torn apart by forces outside our control? And in an era rife with conspiracy theory and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps even of our own imagining?”
Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, and Connie Britton all joined De Niro in the series back in April.

Robert De Niro isn’t letting his age slow him down when it comes to making films — or children. In a new interview with Et Canada, the actor revealed that he “just had a baby,” making him a father of seven at 79 years old.
Et Canada confirmed with De Niro’s representatives that the Godfather star has indeed welcomed a new child. There’s no official word on who the mother is, but Page Six did point out that he was recently spotted with his rumored girlfriend — 64-year-old producer Tiffany Chen — as she sported a pretty clear baby bump.
De Niro’s other children are 51-year-old Drena, 46-year-old Raphael, 27-year-old Julian and Aaron, 25-year-old Elliot, and 11-year-old Helen. Many of De Niro’s kids were born via surrogate and/or IVF, which means he either actively pursued having another child or went about it the old-fashioned way, which are both equally terrifying concepts.

Mike White's HBO dramedy "The White Lotus" remains one of the most unlikely smash hits in TV history. During the dark days of the pandemic when creatives weren't even sure if Hollywood still had a future, HBO needed content and needed it quick. White was a fast and effective writer who could potentially develop a show in record time. "HBO came to me and was hoping I could come up with some idea that was Covid-friendly and in one location," White told The Hollywood Reporter when season 1 premiered. "I was like, 'Maybe we can do a show in a posh hotel?' That was kind of the initial idea, then I thought there's something I've always wanted to write about the leisure world and people trying to escape their lives and then ending up being more stuck in a crucible."
Television history was made and season 1 became a cult phenomenon.

Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, and Connie Britton will join Robert De Niro in the cast of Netflix’s upcoming thriller Zero Day. It’s a Friday Night Lights reunion for Plemons and Britton. Caplan is set to play Alexandra Mullen, a young Congresswoman who has sought to distance herself from her father’s political legacy. Plemons will play Roger Carlson, a former Mullen “body man” seeking a return to the national stage alongside Mullen. Allen is Sheila Mullen, a former First Lady and nominee to the federal bench whose professional ambitions take a backseat to her husband’s political career. And finally, Britton plays Valerie Whitesell, a savvy, intelligent political operative who was Mullen’s former Chief of Staff. They join De Niro as the lead as George Mullen, a massively popular but complicated former American President who is pulled from retirement to head a commission tasked with investigating a devastating global cyber-attack.
