David Chipperfield: Form Matters (2012) Poster

David Chipperfield: Self

Quotes

  • David Chipperfield : I realized the one thing architects never want to talk about is 'form'. Or at least they never want to talk about why a building looks like that. They will always say it's about structure or it's about process or... very few architects have the courage to admit that it's a fragile process. And I realize that probably I have never done that. I never talk about the projects from the point of view why did that building look like that. Well then I will tell my little narrative. So I wanted this to be a bit more honest, I wanted ourselves to be more honest about what I believe is fundamental is what is the materiality of buildings and why do we materialize buildings in the way we do.

  • David Chipperfield : The modern movement really suffered from trying to be always manifested and manifestos of the 20th century were as destructive as they were creative. Form follows function, what a lot of nonsense. These things don't help us. At the same time you can say I don't believe in manifestos therefore there is nothing to talk about. That's not true. I think there is another way of trying to describe ideas and thoughts, and maybe at this point of my career I can be a bit more justified in being able to say having worked this long in this way, these are the things which interest me, and maybe from the experience now at least those words might be worth reading.
