Superbly made and involving - totally gripping

Warning: Spoilers
This is a magnificently made and well written series about the Korean war. In terms of military content the series is interesting because it shows the different tactics and mistakes. There is a wide variety of superbly choreographed fights and battles from bridge to river to cliff to city street fighting to snowy battles and tanks and planes are involved. The terrorism attack at the club is exciting and shocking. The Korean element of this show is a strong emotional connection with the characters from beginning to end. Band of Brothers and the Pacific felt like documentaries compared to this. The PTSD episode is quite uniquely moving as the mental toll on the soldiers is illustrated. No Rambo like heroes here. Another very good aspect is that the soldiers are flawed and the series shows interesting bad characters like the public relations obsessed Lieutenant and the nasty sergeant. So Ji Sub and Yoon Kye Sang are convincing as soldiers and well cast. Kim Ha Neul as the object of their affection is a bit inexpressive but it doesn't matter. There is so much going on. A few faults. There are frustrating and irritating moments because of the romance. Like why did she do this or why did he do that? The poignant ending has pros and cons. It shows the North South separation and at least none of the main characters was killed. But those who want a happily ever after will be sad. This show should be on Netflix - it's a moving testimony to the forgotten war.

All i can say is it's 10/10. SJS should have won Baeksang awards for this. Just too good. So Ji Sub fans, this is a must-watch for you.

I'm gonna read more about Korean War after writing this review.

20 episodes it is, but all are important episodes.

Blew it up!

The more I watch war themed dramas the more I'm convinced that this genre is best fit in a movie format instead of a drama. It's still a decent drama but consistency is rarer than winning the lottery especially with how they decided to end it. That time-skip ending was objectively and undeniably bad! What's even worse was how they tried to justify the time skip. Even if the writer was suborn and wanted to force a time skip ending, there were definitely many other ways to better layout the necessary elements to execute it in a meaningful and impactful way instead of creating a mockery. Proceed with caution.
