The first feature film ever about the women who fought for their right to vote is glorious. It is angry and passionate and defiant. It is essential. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women; love the cast
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Votes for women!
Campaigns to include women in the democratic process via voting have been going on for centuries. There are places in the world that we would consider the height of civilization — *cough* Switzerland *cough* 1971 *cough* — that have only just afforded women this basic human dignity within my lifetime. (I’m not terribly old.) For the first time ever, women in Saudi Arabia will be allowed to vote in local elections happening this December. This fight has concerned half the human race and won’t officially end until that first Saudi woman...

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

There are lots of girls and women in this movie, which is good. Most of the women, however, are caretakers of children or mothers, which isn’t great.

This desperately terrible children’s fantasy is an unpleasant mishmash of dated slapstick, unwittingly sinister adventure, and icky magic. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

From its frankly amazing all-star, Anglophile-favorites cast — Emily Watson, Dominic Monaghan, Celia Imrie, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Miller, Lesley Manville; plus Joan Collins — to the font used in its title design, Molly Moon and the Incredible Book of Hypnotism would like you to believe you are in for some Harry Potter-style awesomeness. Be not fooled. This desperately terrible children’s fantasy, based on the first book in the Ya series by Georgia Byng, is an unpleasant mishmash of hopelessly dated over-the-top slapstick, orphan-in-the-big-city adventure that ranges from unlikely to dangerous to unwittingly sinister, and icky magic that is meant to be charming and is instead deeply disturbing.

Disney is working hard to keep the plot of next year’s “Tomorrowland” under wraps -- their efforts have only been met with more fervent prying -- and two major rumors have already come out about the sci-fi flick starring George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. The first was about Walt Disney working with the government to reveal that UFOs exist. The second was about a genius middle-aged man, a pre-pubescent robot girl, and a real teenage girl teaming up to unravel the mystery of an alternative dimension called Tomorrowland. It looks like the second one has more truth to it, because the robot girl has been cast. British actress Raffey Cassidy (who played a young Kristen Stewart in “Snow White and The Huntsman” and will play the title character in the upcoming indie “Molly Moon: The Incredible Hypnotist”) has scored the role of a decades old robot who knows several fighting styles.
