There’s no shortage of movies to stream on Netflix. Any subscriber that logs onto the platform these days will likely see a bunch of new releases, gruesome horror films, and sweet rom-coms. But with so many big, flashy studio films and Netflix originals to choose from, it can be difficult for the indie films that flood the streamer to stand out.
For sure, a place in Netflix’s library can be a great opportunity for independent cinema to find an audience it otherwise wouldn’t reach in theaters or on television. But for all the big starry auteur films that Netflix picks up and turns into major awards contenders (see “Marriage Story” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”), there’s an under-the-radar, overlooked pick that doesn’t have the names or prestige attached to it, and feels destined to serve as mere library filler as people look for the films they do know.

Paul Rudd will be in Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 after appearing in a surprise cameo role in Tuesday’s Season 2 finale.
In the finale (spoiler alert!), Rudd appears in a flash forward (a year later), as Ben, a snobbish leading actor in Oliver’s (Martin Short) seemingly triumphant return to directing on Broadway. He and Charles exchange less-than-pleasantries in a sinister and vague chat, and as he makes his opening monologue, he literally croaks onstage and dies.
“Hopefully the audience is going to be very excited to know what happened in that year for our trio, and also what happened with that show, and God knows the excitement over having Paul Rudd in the show playing Ben Glenroy, the leading actor of the show, victim or otherwise, knowing that our victims tend to have a lot of screen time in our seasons,” showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap.

While theatrical exhibition has taken a major hit during the pandemic, buyers are still expected to arrive at the virtual Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, eager to stock up on titles for release in cinemas later this year. But those distributors will have to contend with new rules that have taken shape over the last few years: If a streaming service wants a movie and is willing to pay, good luck.
Streamers’ deep pockets and the fact that they’re operating with a completely different set of equations means that a movie priced for streaming is becoming tougher and tougher for theatrical distributors to afford. It’s a scenario that’s led to the emergence of partnerships between the likes of Hulu and Neon, and Apple and A24 — the streamers get the prestige bump and marketing budget that comes with a theatrical release, and the theatrical distributors get a chance...

“What if there’s no such thing as happiness, just moments of not being depressed?” So asks Jane, played by Sally Hawkins, in the film “Eternal Beauty.” Recently dumped at the altar, Jane is having a rough go of things, spiraling into a chaotic world where love and relationships, both real and imagined, collide. IndieWire shares the exclusive first trailer for the film, arriving on VOD from Samuel Goldwyn Films, on October 2 below.
“Eternal Beauty” is directed by Craig Roberts, the young English actor best known for the films “Submarine,” “Neighbors,” and “The Fundamentals of Caring.” But he also starred in, and directed, 2015’s “Just Jim,” and it was in the edit on that coming-of-age film that Roberts came up with the character of Jane, a paranoid schizophrenic with mommy issues who stops taking her medication.

For the upcoming 91st Oscar telecast, after all the noise about the worst ratings in history, the Academy had to replace producers Michael DeLuca and Jennifer Todd. The duo did well enough their first time around (the Best Picture snafu was not their fault) to warrant returning their second, and put on a decent show within the usual constraints of a ceremony that must showcase 24 award winners.

The Netflix breakout series 13 Reasons Why was renewed for a second season and since the announcement, fans are wondering if Selena Gomez will make an appearance on the show.
Amy Hargreaves, who stars in the show as Mrs. Jensen, Clay’s mom is saying that she doesn’t see Gomez, executive producer of the show, getting in front of the camera for in Season 2.
“It would become so much more about Selena Gomez and not about the story,” Hargreaves tells ABC News. “It would kinda distract from the main story. So I can’t imagine that she would pop up for a cameo, but who knows? You never know.”

Christian Navarro, a star of 13 Reasons Why, has defended the Netflix show against criticism from some parents and school officials who say it glamorizes suicide.
Schools across the country have issued warnings to parents over concerns about the show.
At the People and Entertainment Weekly Upfronts party Monday night, Navarro noted the involvement of mental health experts during production.
“I think they’re not watching the same show. When we were working on it, we had tons of mental health experts on set at all times, our producers were very diligent on making sure that the tone was inclusive and helpful and not harmful,” Navarro, 25, told People.

Selena Gomez enjoyed a Cinderella moment on Monday night when she stepped out for her first carpet appearance with her new boyfriend, The Weeknd, at the Met Gala.

Standing up for her work. Selena Gomez addressed the controversy surrounding her Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why amid claims that the show exploits and glamorizes teen suicide.
"We stayed very true to the book and that's initially what Jay Asher created, was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story, and I think that's what we wanted to do," the singer, 24, told the Associated Press, referencing the author of the 2007 young adult novel that the show is based on.
"We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, [the backlash is] going to come no matter what," added Gomez, who is an executive producer of the series. "It's not an easy subject to talk about, but I'm very fortunate with how it's doing."

2017-04-27T06:43:13-07:00Schools Issue Warning About '13 Reasons Why'
It's one of the hottest new shows on Netflix, but the chief psychologist with the Ottawa Catholic School Board is concerned about how 13 Reasons Why portrays suicide, and she's urging parents to talk to teens about it.
The show tells the story of a 17-year-old girl named Hannah who takes her own life. Before she dies, she sends audiotapes to the people she holds responsible.
While 13 Reasons Why is wildly popular and easily accessible to many high school students, Ottawa Catholic School Board chief psychologist and mental health lead Dr. Elizabeth Paquette doesn't recommend schools use it as a teaching tool when it comes to suicide.

Theoretical physicist Brian Greene has reached a wider audience through his many books on physics, including “The Elegant Universe,” “The Fabric of the Cosmos” and “Icarus at the Edge of Time.” But last year, he premiered his play “Light Falls: Space, Time, and an Obsession of Einstein,” a cerebral, dramatic retelling of the story of Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, at the World Science Festival last year. Now, an audiobook performance narrated by Green and an all-star cast led by actor Paul Rudd that’s based on the play is now available to download from Audible. Listen to a brief excerpt of the audio play below, featuring Rudd as Einstein himself, and watch an animated clip that explains the title of the play.

Paul Rudd had no idea how big a star Selena Gomez was until he filmed new movie "The Fundamentals of Caring" with her.
The Ant-Man star knew his castmate was popular, but had no idea she was a really big deal until he witnessed her fame at first hand.
"I'm so out of touch," Paul admits to Variety. "It wasn't until we were filming and I saw thousands of people turning out to try and see her that I realised what a phenomenon she is. To see her deal with that kind of fame, I came away even more impressed with her. She's extraordinary."
Director Rob Burnett also praised the 23-year-old's talents, saying Selena is "only at the beginning of her talents".
In the film, the Ant-Man star plays an out-of-work novelist who is charged with looking after a foul-mouthed, wheelchair-bound teenager on a road trip. Selena plays a young runaway who joins their adventure.

Last seen wrecking shop with the rest of the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War, Paul Rudd changes gears quite considerably with the Netflix distributed The Fundamentals of Caring, the second feature from We Made This Movie director Rob Burnett. Stepping into the shoes of retired writer Ben Benjamin, whose life is in a downward spiral after a personal tragedy. After qualifying as a care giver, his first charge is Trevor (Craig Roberts), a young man suffering from muscular dystrophy who might be just as broken as himself. Soon becoming friends, the pair embark on a cross country trip to visit the World's Deepest Pit, where they find they can help each other fix themselves. So yeah, The Fundamentals of Caring isn’t anything new when it comes to this type of Indie drama, but to dismiss it on those terms would be a huge mistake. Burnett’s script may...

Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts may have chemistry, but their journey of self-discovery is stuffed with Sundance stereotypes
The Sundance film festival in Park City, Utah, showcases more than 150 feature films each year, among them everything from soporific character studies to gross-out comedy vehicles. Yet to many, Sundance is most closely associated with a particular strain of indie dramedy that came to dominate the festival in the mid-2000s, when the likes of Garden State and Little Miss Sunshine made their debuts. This subgenre has clung on for dear life ever since, even as its box-office clout has waned severely (more people appeared in the title of last year’s Me And Earl And The Dying Girl than showed up to watch it on opening weekend).
These glib, self-conscious films have turned the very word “Sundance” into something of a pejorative, but still they command industry attention: this year’s prime example,...

Since her brilliant transition from Disney star to rebellious teen in Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” Selena Gomez continues to surprise. Too bad the same can’t be said for her new movie, “The Fundamentals of Caring,” a saccharine buddy dramedy from writer-director Rob Burnett (best known as the executive producer of “The Late Show with David Letterman”).
“The Fundamentals of Caring” stars Paul Rudd as Ben, a grieving father and failed writer who takes a job as a caretaker for an amusingly surly teenage boy. Not that Trevor, played by a doe-eyed Craig Roberts (“Submarine”), doesn’t have a reason to be surly; he suffers from muscular dystrophy, a disorder that severely impairs his physical abilities but leaves his mind sharp. Ben and Trevor strike up an all-too-likely friendship, each being the only one to tell the other the hard truths.

HBO had promised that it would give the troubled series Vinyl a chance at a second season, but those promises evaporated this week as the network changed its mind and cancelled the series outright. The cancellation is a blow to the series' high-profile producers, Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger.
Vinyl debuted on HBO back in February, and despite the involvement of its big-name producers, it never caught on with critics or viewers. The show was criticized for being narratively challenged and too enamored of stylish gimmicks. HBO announced the series' renewal early on in its first-season run, but eventually the network called for a new showrunner and a retooling of the series. Ultimately, the network leadership seemed to decide that taking a chance that the new version of the series would be better wasn't worth the financial risk involved.

The Fundamentals Of Caring is based on the 2012 novel by Jonathan Evison – The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving – and is essentially a road-trip movie, starring Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Craig Roberts (Bad Neighbors) and Selena Gomez (Bad Neighbors 2).
