When comedian and actor Will Farrell learned that his longtime friend and onetime Saturday Night Live (SNL) head writer Harper Steele had come out as a trans woman at the age of 61, he, like most of us on the outside looking in, had questions. As a close, dedicated friend, however, Farrell wanted to be as respectful as possible, putting compassion and empathy first and his own, possibly unresolved feelings second (or last). The perfectly titled result, Will & Harper, follows Farrell and Steele from the first, meaningful days when Farrell received a life- and friendship-changing email where...

Universal Pictures has preemptively nabbed a live action project from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, to be produced with Erik Feig’s Picturestart.
Titled “Strays,” the film is an adult comedy and original pitch from writer Dan Perrault (“American Vandal”), about an abandoned dog who teams up with other strays to get revenge on his former owner.
The project will be directed by Josh Greenbaum, who just made his narrative directorial debut with Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s “Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” Greenbaum is an Emmy winner who hails from the unscripted space.
Picturestart packaged and developed Perrault’s script for Greenbaum, Lord and Miller and their label’s film president Aditya Sood, and producer Louis Leterrier who will join via his Rabbit Hole Productions banner. Feig will produce for Picturestart.

George Lazenby didn’t have much time as James Bond. The Australian model and car salesman notoriously bluffed his way into succeeding Sean Connery in 1969’s “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” (in which 007 falls in love with Diana Rigg, and left grief-stricken when she’s murdered by Telly Savalas’ Blofeld). He then walked away and slipped into obscurity.
But, thanks to “Becoming Bond,” the Hulu doc premiering Saturday, the 77-year-old Lazenby steps out of the shadows. Through a hilarious combination of onscreen narration and re-enactments starring Josh Lawson, Lazenby recounts his wild exploits, filled with sex, drugs, and rebellion. It’s directed by Josh Greenbaum (“The Short Game”) as “Drunk History” meets “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.”
At Wednesday’s premiere of “Becoming Bond” at Cinefamily in Hollywood, Lazenby ranked his fleeting moments as 007 with IndieWire:

It's been an excellent year for documentaries already in 2017 with such incredible films as Icarus, An Inconvenient Sequel, Nobody Speak, and Trophy all premiering at Sundance (those last two playing SXSW as well). There have been several new great documentaries joining the conversation here at SXSW as well. It seems it could be a bumper year for docs. For James Bond fans, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has long been a favorite of many. But the story of one-and-done 007 actor George Lazenby might not be too familiar. Becoming Bond, Josh Greenbaum's follow-up to the excellent The Short Game, aims to correct that -- but in a far more entertaining way than you might expect. The spine of the film is an interview with...

A film adaptation of Jeff Brown’s beloved children’s book Flat Stanley has been in the works over at Fox for some time now, but today brings news that the project is finally moving forward with a new director and pair of writers. Josh Greenbaum, who previously directed a golf documentary titled The Short Game, has signed on to helm. Additionally, Chad Damiani and J.P. Director Josh Greenbaum seems to have found a winning formula for digital programming -- be cute, be funny and be about sports. Call him the king of streaming media: His children's golf competition film "The Short Game," which won the Audience Award at SXSW, premiered yesterday on Netflix as the company's first documentary acquisition, and his nonfiction series about mascots "Behind the Mask" is wrapping up a successful first season as an original Hulu series and has already been renewed for a second. The two are heart-tugging, upbeat affairs that cut with schematic precision between a representative array of characters and know to cut away right at exciting moments -- they're documentary comfort food, and clearly they're falling into the right quadrants of appeal for the internet major subscription streaming services. "The Short Game," which is set at the annual U.S. Kids Golf World Championships for athletes age eight and younger in Pinehurst,...

We recently reported on the rumor that Netflix would make a run at this year's Oscars by acquiring the distribution rights to film festival darling The Square. Well, we were half right. Netflix has actually acquired the rights to two documentaries: The Square and The Short Game. The Short Game, directed by Josh Greenbaum, follows a group of seven-year-old golfers aiming for the Junior World Championships. Judging by its trailer, it will be light and whimsical, a stark contrast to the seemingly-depressing-but-important tone of The Square. As far as I can tell, The Short Game hasn't picked up any Oscar buzz yet, but it is still very early. “As a filmmaker, you hope your work will reach as many people as possible," commented Greenberg, "and that’s what’s so exciting about partnering with Netflix, who are presenting some of the most original and cutting-edge programming on the planet right now.

You don't have to like sports to be completely obsessed with Hulu's newest original series, "Behind the Mask." It gets the same caveat as "Friday Night Lights" or "Game of Thrones," even -- don't like football/fantasy/sports/whatever? Doesn't matter! -- this is a story about people, and if you don't scream at your computer screen or cry during at least one episode, then you probably need to take a chisel to that iced-over heart of yours.
"Behind the Mask" follows the men who embody the mascots for teams at four distinct levels: high school, college, semi-pro, and professional. Of course, it also breaks the cardinal rule of mascoting: don't reveal your face. But thank goodness these guys do reveal themselves, because "Behind the Mask" is a fascinating, emotional, and often hilarious look at what it takes to cheer on even the least spirited of communities.
Why mascots? "They're superheroes.

With a background in comedy shorts, you’d be forgiven if you thought Josh Greenbaum’s first feature, a documentary that follows the 7 and 8-year old competitors in the World Championships of Junior Golf, would be a dark look at another group of driven parents. But that’s not what Greenbaum was interested in doing. Instead, he focuses on the children, these pre-teens who can, at turns, appear tremendously adult, or just like any other 7-year old. The Short Game follows eight competitors through last year’s championships, though production actually started a year before at the previous championships. That was where they […]...

This summer, Hulu premiered an animated superhero comedy ("The Awesomes") and a Western ("Quick Draw"), and now the streaming site has unveiled a trailer for its newest original show. "Behind the Mask" is a docu-series that will take a closer look at the banner and flag-clad world of sports team mascots."Behind the Mask" is the creation of Josh Greenbaum, the director of kid golf competition doc "The Short Game," which premiered at SXSW this year. It will follow the in-and-out-of-suit lives of fours mascots: Lebanon High School's Rooty the Cedar Tree, Unlv's college mascot Hey Reb!, minor league hockey mascot Tux the Penguin and, finally, professional NBA mascot Bango of the Milwaukee Bucks. The series promises to put a face to an otherwise faceless custom-wearing tradition that has for long been a staple of American sports culture."Behind the Mask" is set to be released on Hulu and...

The Short Game
Directed by Josh Greenbaum
USA, 2013
If The Short Game is any indication, it’s hard work being a child in the 21st century. The hook of this new documentary is fairly high-concept—it follows eight of over 1500 golfers age 7 or 8 competing at a world championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina—and yet, as slick as it is, it’s hard not to feel both a bit depressed at the almost comically driven subjects and wistful for a relaxed childhood not centered around detailed workouts or tireless practicing.
Director Josh Greenbaum, from pretty much the first shot, teases a deeper exploration of modern childhood around the world while creating the most stylish, flashy package as possible. The pacing is, frankly, so quick that a longer film would be preferable. One hundred minutes just isn’t enough to get to know these kids outside of their surface-level defining traits. One...

Documentaries live and die on the strength of their characters. Think about some of the most memorable docs in recent years; Billy Mitchell in King of Kong, Steve "Lips" Kudlow in Anvil: The Story of Anvil, or the soldiers of Op Restrepo. Each of these movies takes us into the lives of characters so remarkable, in some cases it's difficult to believe they aren't figments of a talented screenwriter's imagination. But it's the capture and vivid depiction of the too-good-to-be-true characters that ignites a narrative and makes a documentary really shine. This is absolutely the case in Josh Greenbaum's youth golf documentary The Short Game. Packed with some of the most charming seven and eight year-olds ever captured, Greenbaum takes us into their lives...

The U.S. Golf Kids World Championship Tournament at Pinehurst, America's largest course, invites players up to age 12. It was a canny choice, though, for Josh Greenbaum's The Short Game to follow only seven- and eight-year-old competitors. It's the "give me the child, I'll give you the man" age, when kids are steeped in childhood yet emerging as whomever they'll become. This calls to mind the Michael Apted project that began with 7 Up in 1964, following 14 English children of different classes throughout their lives. If The Short Game has any such ambitions, they're not evident. The film follows eight young golfers and their families from varied socioeconomic, cultural, and international backgrounds, adding heft to the kiddo-sports charm but no real focus. At worst...

Making the most of his time across the pond, Justin Timberlake showed up at Magic Radio Studios in London this morning (September 4).
The “Like I Love You” singer donned a black fedora with a grey and white button-up top and black trousers as he stopped to sign autographs before heading inside for an interview.
Last night, Justin attended the 2013 GQ Men of the Year Awards at the Royal Opera House, working his mojo in a snazzy black tuxedo.
Meanwhile, it sounds like Timberlake has been busy as an executive producer as of late- he tweeted, “New trailer for a documentary I exec produced called The Short Game(out 9/20) just hit @iTunes…check it out!”...
