A Hollywood "inside joke" that actually works...
A_Different_Drummer6 August 2014
Its the second season of a hit series that is just overflowing with talent at both ends of the camera and out of nowhere the producers pitch the viewer an episode ... without the star...? I would like to be able to tell you that I did hours of research to find the "real" story -- something like Jim was ill, Jim had family issues, Jim was in contract negotiations ... but the fact is that IMDb doesn't pay me enough for that (doesn't pay me at all in fact) so all I can say is that, if you had a database of 100,000 TV episodes, you would be hard-pressed to find many (if any) where the star is offscreeen for 98% of the story.

And still drawing a paycheck.

Yet here we are.

Bottom line, it worked, it is a testament to the production team here that they were able to deliver an effective and suspenseful episode, arguably as good as any in the series, using only the supporting cast.

A Hollywood "inside joke" ... that worked!

The Mathematical and Computer Genius
claudio_carvalho24 February 2024
Reese and the other three men are in custody in Rikers, and Carter is trying to release him. However, Donnelly does not have the intention to release any of the three men after the 72-h custody since he is obsessed to find the man in the suit. Meanwhile, Finch and Fusco are investigating the number delivered by The Machine, the high-school student Caleb Phipps, in Brooklyn. They learn that Caleb is a poor student, who lives with his alcoholic mother alone after the death of his older brother Ryan, who felt on the tracks of the subway train two years ago. Finch poses of substitute teacher and soon he finds that Caleb is a mathematical and computer genius. Finch also learns that he is developing a sophisticated software, and his computer teacher is stealing the program to sell it for a fortune. He has also problem with a dangerous gang of drug dealers. After many investigations, Finch finds who is targeting Caleb.

"2 Pi r" is another excellent episode of "Person of Interest, where Finch and Fusco have to act alone since Reese and Carter are in Rikers for different purposes. The victim Caleb is a mathematical and computer genius, maybe the same way that Finch was. However, his trauma for losing his brother in a silly game has turned him in a remorseful teenager. My vote is nine.

Brilliantly dumb opening stakes taint the overall quality

The last 40 minutes of this episode are great. The opening concept of "we can only hold these men for 72 hours without charging them" is brilliantly dumb when you arrested all 4 well-armed men in the middle of a broken in and exploded bank. Pretty sure u can charge them.

But... he's still in danger...

Warning: Spoilers
There was some compelling stuff in this episode like the kid secretly running a drug ring but some things rubbed me the wrong way. Like the school getting mad at a substitute teacher for teaching math. Honestly the whole school kind of seemed like a caricature of what american schools are expected to be. Also, Caleb's mom is an addict and he just assumes she'll be fine taking care of herself with unlimited money for drugs after he's gone? That solution wasn't thought through. Oh, and the fact that the drug dealers are still out looking for Caleb. That was never resolved. Like, minutes after the episode ends, Caleb is going to die anyway. This episode had a couple misdirects too many and would have been better if they stuck with the original revenge explanation.
