Filming began in less than a week after Girdwood bought his first camera. He stopped at Moneyball Sportswear in Lansing, MI and turned it on for the first time. The initial shots are set with too high an exposure and were edited heavily in post.
Micheal Moore appears via a Skype screen recording from New York, the only non-Michigan and non-international location used in the film.
Three international athletes contributed to the film over Skype with time zone differences varying. The interview with Lamar Rice was on a 12-hour time difference.
All participants were contacted through Skype except those who were stopped on the street during "Back to the Bricks" in Flint.
There was no initial storyboard to the film. It grew organically through the respondents' direction.
