Although Oscar-winner Gary Oldman has had numerous memorable roles in his life, most fans will know him as either Sirius Black from the Harry Potter film series or as James Gordon from Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Oldman made both these roles his own, but Sirius Black is especially noteworthy here, as Oldman remains the only actor who portrayed the character to date, so most Harry Potter fans actually have a tough time imagining anyone else in the role besides Oldman. Still, from some recent comments, it seems that Oldman himself wasn’t satisfied with the role, and that has sparked some controversy.
During a podcast talk in December 2023, Oldman said the following about his interpretation of the beloved character:
“I think my work is mediocre in. No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming,...

Gary Oldman is clarifying what he really regrets about playing Sirius Black in the “Harry Potter” film franchise.
At Cannes, Oldman cleared up any confusion about the time in December 2023 that he called his performance in the movies “mediocre.”
“What I meant by that is, as any artist or any actor or painter, you are always hypercritical of your own work,” Oldman said. “If you’re not, and you’re satisfied with what you’re doing, that would be death to me. If I watched a performance of myself and thought, ‘My God, I’m fantastic in this,’ that would be a sad day.”
Readers can watch the video of the Cannes press conference below.
Oldman added that he was not trying to “disparage anyone out there who are fans of ‘Harry Potter’ and the films and the character, who I think is much beloved.” Yet, according to the actor,...

Last December, Gary Oldman surprised Harry Potter fans when he revealed how dissatisfied he is with one of his most famous performances: Sirius Black.
The Dark Knight Trilogy star first played the beloved J.K. Rowling creation in 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, delivering a madcap performance before reprising the role (and somewhat dialling it back) in the next two movies. Eventually, Oldman bid farewell to the character when Sirius died in battle during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Describing his work in the franchise as "mediocre," the screen icon said at the time, "Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what's coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently."
Oldman's comments generated a great deal of discussion among fans, with many quick to argue that his performance was anything but "mediocre.

Last year, renowned actor Gary Oldman appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with a humbled opinion of one of his performances. Oldman would discuss his run as the character of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter film series and gave himself a self-deprecating opinion of his portrayal. “I think my work is mediocre in it,” says Oldman. “No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan, if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.” Oldman told Horowitz, “I’ll tell you what it is,” he says. “It’s like anything if I sat and watched myself in something and said, ‘My god, I’m amazing,’ that would be a very sad day because you want to make the next thing better.”

The affection that James Hetfield feels for Motörhead’s late frontman, Lemmy Kilmister, is well documented: Metallica have covered “Overkill” dozens of times, the whole band once performed as “The Lemmys” at Kilmister’s 50th birthday bash, and Hetfield’s lyrics to Metallica’s “Murder One” is basically a string of Kilmister references. Now Kilmister will forever be a part of Hetfield since the singer blended some of the Motörhead frontman’s cremains into tattoo ink and got an Ace of Spades tat on his right middle finger.

Bob Edwards, a Peabody-winning National Radio Hall of Famer who anchored NPR’s Morning Edition for nearly a quarter-century before moving to satellite radio, died Saturday. He was 76. National Public Radio announced his death but did not provide details.
Edwards joined the radio pubcaster in 1974 and soon afterward became a co-host of its signature news program All Things Considered with Susan Stamberg. He left that show in 1979 to be the founding anchor of Morning Edition, which he would host with his warm baritone until 2004. His first interview for the show was Charles Osgood, who died last month.
“Bob Edwards understood the intimate and directly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums,” NPR CEO John Lansing wrote in announcing the death, “and for decades he was a trusted voice in the lives of millions of public radio listeners.”

Actor Taraji P. Henson became a more notable name thanks to her work in projects like Empire and Hidden Figures. But this success might’ve felt bittersweet for the actor, who has been candid about feeling overlooked in the film industry.

In the 2010s, Henson reached the success she’d been striving for. She was steadily building her portfolio at a young age with small roles in popular television shows such as ER, Pacific Blue, and CSI.
At the same time, her film career was also on the rise thanks to the likes of Baby Boy and Hustle & Flow. The 2015 series Empire perhaps launched Henson into a new level of fame. The award-winning music drama was a phenomenon at its time, reintroducing Henson to a much broader audience. She...

SmartLess, the podcast co-hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, just got paid more, with the trio signing a three-year deal with SiriusXM worth a reported $100 million. Now, Tracy, SiriusXM is the biggest satellite radio corporation in the world…
This summer, SmartLess will officially be part of the Sirius team, joining a number of other podcasts, including James Corden’s own and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, which is currently available on channel 104. This is a monumental deal for the podcasting world, but it’s not much of a surprise considering just how popular SmartLess has become. It’s not every podcast that gets its own behind-the-scenes documentary, as SmartLess did courtesy of Max.
According to SiriusXM president and Cco Scott Greenstein (via The Hollywood Reporter), “At SiriusXM, we are proud to be home to the stars, and with Jason, Sean and Will joining us, that statement has never been more true.

Gary Oldman had a confession to make when he appeared on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast: He is not a fan of his performances as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise. Sitting down with the media journalist during the last days of 2023, Oldman was in good spirits when he admitted, “I think my work is mediocre in [those movies].”
Oldman is referring specifically to when he appeared as the Wizarding World’s most notorious escaped convict, and surprise godfather of Harry Potter, in the films Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007).
“No, I do,” he continued. “Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.” He went on to elaborate,...

Gary Oldman doesn’t think his work at Hogwarts was all that magical.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz during the latest “Happy Sad Confused” podcast released Thursday (via Entertainment Weekly), Oldman spoke about his stint as an ensemble member of the popular “Harry Potter” blockbuster franchise. Oldman portrayed the title character’s outlaw godfather, Sirius Black. He first appeared in the 2004 third film “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” later reprising the role in 2005’s “Goblet of Fire” and 2007’s “Order of the Phoenix,” after which his character was killed off. He made a final appearance in the series in a cameo for the seventh and final film, “Deathly Hallows — Part 2.”

New York is suing SiriusXM over a drawn-out cancellation process allegedly aimed at trapping consumers in unwanted subscriptions.
A lawsuit, filed in New York’s state Supreme Court on Wednesday, points to a probe by prosecutors, who take issue with Sirius training employees to put “subscribers through a lengthy, six-part script” that includes pitching numerous retention offers and to “refuse cancellation” until customers abandon the process.
In a statement, a Sirius spokesperson said the complaint “grossly mischaracterizes” the company’s practices. “It’s telling that the New York Attorney General issued a press release before providing SiriusXM with a copy of the complaint,” the statement continued. “Like a number of consumer businesses, we offer a variety of options for customers to sign up for or cancel their SiriusXM subscription and, upon receiving and reviewing the complaint, we intend to vigorously defend against these baseless allegations.”

Zac Efron said he would be “honoured” to play Matthew Perry in a film that the Friends actor had been planning before his death on 29 October.

Jada Pinkett Smith is “grateful” for the Oscars slap, the actor and talkshow host told Jess Cagle on Sirius Xm’s “The Jess Cagle Show.”
“I’m grateful for it all,” Smith said, emphasizing that she’s a “real believer” that everything happens for a reason and that it’s all about one’s mindset. “So, when painful situations occur, I always know that there’s an opportunity for a big blessing. And so, in that particular circumstance, I really focused on the blessings. I really focused on what is being asked of me, from that space of love and connection, what is being asked of me.”
When Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards, Smith knew her husband was going to enter the “dark night of the soul that he hadn’t entered before” as the public turned against him. She also knew she would be challenged to stand by him.

Ben Affleck’s latest directorial effort, the Amazon theatrical release “Air,” has scored the Oscar-winning filmmaker some of the best reviews of his entire career and also probably earned Affleck a spot on many future Spotify Wrapped year-end playlists. The basketball drama about Nike’s efforts to sign Michael Jordan to a lucrative sneaker contract starts with the Dire Straits hit “Money for Nothing” and includes numerous ‘80s favorites throughout.
But Affleck doesn’t just include radio hits on the film’s soundtrack. As revealed by Film Music Reporter – and as known by anyone who has seen the movie thus far – “Air” also heavily features classic ‘80s film score in lieu of its own complete original score. Among some of the movie, scores included in “Air” are “Firestarter,” “Three O’Clock High,” “Risky Business,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Raw Deal,” and “Body Double.” Composer Paul Haslinger,...

Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” is ubiquitous at sporting events around the world. For the Virginia Tech Hokies, it has become a universal rallying cry for their various athletic programs.
When the Hokies locked up the No. 1 seed in the women’s NCAA basketball tournament, they also garnered home-court advantage, hosting the first two rounds at their own Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. However, the NCAA treats tournament games as if they’re at a neutral site in an effort to keep the on-campus contests as fair as possible. That means no “Enter Sandman,” or the university would face a fine.
Well, the Virginia Tech student body, aka the Cassell Guard, had other ideas. At the tipoff of the Hokies’ matchup against 16-seed Chattanooga on Friday, the crowd belted out “Enter Sandman” a cappella, impressively singing the song in chorus. They were still singing when Virginia Tech’s Georgia Amoore sunk the first 3-pointer of the game.

Like most celebrities, Sarah Jessica Parker puts a lot of time and effort into her appearance. She often looks stunning on the red carpet and on screen. However, the And Just Like That… star understands that staying fit doesn’t come easy for everyone.

Parker has been a style icon since rising to fame as Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City.
In the hit HBO series, the actor wore many memorable pieces, including designer shoes and handbags, little black dresses, and even tutus. Even though Sex and the City was set in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Carrie’s outfits still serve as fashion inspirations for women today.
Parker has even ventured into the fashion designing business. In 2007, she launched her clothing line, Bitten, sold at the former clothing chain Steve & Barry’s.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for “The Last of Us” Episode 3, “Long, Long Time.”]
It’s not often that a song is so crucial to a TV episode that it ends up becoming the title, too. But given how important the Linda Ronstadt song “Long, Long Time” is to the love story of Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) in this week’s episode of “The Last of Us,” it’s the title that makes most sense.
An early, pivotal moment in the episode sees Frank and Bill sing the 1970 Linda Ronstadt hit while playing it on an antique piano. Frank’s clumsier rendition, paired with Bill’s soulful version, ends up being a catalyst to their relationship and sets the tone for the rest of their first day together. Craig Mazin, episode writer and series co-creator (along with original game writer Neil Druckmann), knew that he wanted to structure the episode around a musical moment,...

The Biden administration announced Wednesday that the U.S. will equip Ukraine with a battalion of 31 M1 Abrams tanks, reversing their longstanding hesitation to arm Kyiv in its fight against Russia. The news arrived on Zelensky’s 45th birthday, which Stephen Colbert was quick to point out on The Late Show that evening.

Zerlina Maxwell is leaving MSNBC.
Maxwell, one of the first anchors to launch an all-streaming program for the NBCUniversal-backed news outlet, announced her departure on social media Tuesday. MSNBC decided to cancel her program last month, marking some of the first cutbacks to its streaming ambitions. A program led by Ayman Mohyeldin was also canceled, but he is expected to remain as a weekend host on MSNBC’s cable network.
Executives had hoped Maxwell, a Democratic activist and former campaign aide to Hillary Clinton would stay on in an analyst role. But she appears to have declined. “My last episode of @zerlinashow on 9/15 next week will also be my last day at @msnbc,” she posted Tuesday. The anchor thanked her production team for the ability to use our show and my voice to put the spotlight on black and brown communities that are not often considered in mainstream conversations.

Maxwell, who has worked with MSNBC since 2018 as an analyst and whose Peacock program was among MSNBC’s first streaming offerings, will do her last Peacock program on September 15. Her staff was notified about the move Wednesday by MSNBC President Rashida Jones, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Liza Minnelli fans were concerned about her health based on her appearance at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, when she presented the best picture Oscar to “Coda.” But today, her longtime friend Michael Feinstein posted an Instagram video that he shot in the car with Minnelli right before the Oscars ceremony, his representative comfirmed. Minnelli appears energetic, lively, and clearly excited to be on her way to the event, breaking into song with the Great American Songbook rarity “(It’s Gonna Be) A Great Day” by Vincent Youmans, Edward Eliscu, and Billy Rose.
Since Feinstein posted his video to Instagram, it’s been reposted on Twitter, going a bit viral among her fans who are heartened to see the artist boisterous and full of life. One Twitter commentator wrote, “The cigarette, the sleeves, the broken broadway voice. This is a visual handbook on camp.”

Elodie Polo-Ackermann, who runs the Mediawan-owned Paris-based banner Imagissime, has become one of Europe’s key documentary producers since delivering “Who Killed Little Gregory?,” a different kind of true crime series which marked Netflix’s first documentary original in France.
“Who Killed Little Gregory?” was directed by Gilles Marchand, a critically acclaimed screenwriter and director whose credits include the Cannes title “Who Killed Bambi?” and “L’autre monde.” With his cinematic approach to the genre, Marchand was able to cast a new light on the infamous cold case revolving around the mysterious murder of 4-year old Grégory Villemin in 1984. Saul Williams’ latest endeavor is the multi-pronged “MartyrLoserKing Project,” which focuses the musician, poet, writer, actor, and director’s insights and talents on an ambitious idea that unfolds over three record albums, a graphic novel, and now a film, co-directed with wife and creative partner Anisia Uzeyman, titled “Neptune Frost.” Making its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the curio science-fiction musical is arguably less about a specific story, and is more laudable for its representation of a point of view seldom expressed, and in a manner rarely experienced in cinema.

Longtime Bruce Springsteen fans are well-practiced in the art of waiting in line for tickets, a skill that could come in handy today with reports of virtual wait times for the recently announced Springsteen on Broadway revival clocking in at two hours and counting.
And the price per ticket? Six hundred bucks seems to be a bargain on the primary seller site, with secondary sites already seeking well in advance of that price. Sellers on the secondary market site StubHub are asking for significantly greater amounts.
Just after 2 p.m. New York time today, primary ticket provider SeatGeek tweeted a message to the patient (and not so much) hopefuls: “In the waiting room for Springsteen on Broadway tickets? We’re working hard to ensure that tickets make it into the hands of real fans. The line is moving – you can now refresh your browser & keep your place in line.”
Responses were swift.

Tyler Perry’s Madea is back! Perry is bringing his beloved character back to life, and this time, they’re heading to Netflix.
Perry will write, direct and star in “A Madea Homecoming,” which will be the ninth “Madea” film and the 12th time he will have portrayed the iconic old lady on screen. The news comes after Perry had said in 2018 that he intended to kill off Madea once and for all and end the franchise with 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral.”
“It’s time for me to kill that old bitch. I’m tired,” he told Sirius Xm at the time. “I just don’t want to be her age playing her.”
The films have been box office boons for Lionsgate for over a decade, and all of Perry’s films, including the “Madea” series, have collectively made over $1 billion at the domestic box office — so this is a big get for Netflix.
