Perhaps the show's best episode yet.

Sister Boniface receives a plea for help from her father, who is convinced that a Russian spy is transmitting secret messages through The medium of chess, the good Sister enters a Chess tournament to investigate.

I have to be honest, I think this may just be the best episode of Sister Boniface to date, I absolutely loved that plot, the characters, and the whole Cold War backdrop.

It was great to meet Sister Boniface's parents, they give us a bit of an understanding as to why she ended up in The Church, and where that streak of cleverness comes from. Geoff Rush and Maggie Steed were wonderful in their roles, hopefully they'll be back.

The chess theme was great, and I could actually believe in her being a chess player, she certainly has the brains for the great game.

I honestly thought we were seeing Mrs McCarthy early on, Sister Boniface's mum looked like her. Funny seeing Sister Boniface revert to being a little girl, everyone always seems to revert to the family order, very well realised.

Maybe the best so far.

9/10.

A chess tournament is coming to Great Slaughter and so have Sister Boniface's parents.

Her father Malise Bonham Crane (Geoffrey McGivern) believes that secret codes are being passed via chess moves to the Russians.

A crackpot theory but one Sister Boniface takes up in order to please her father, a retired academic. Felix Livingston helps out.

However once the tournament begins the police investigate a murder. Well known chess player, Anthony Whitlock is murdered in his room. His wife Nadiya is Russian.

Soon Sister Boniface is investigating a chemical formula that increases mental performance. Once young chess player has shot up the rankings in the last year.

A solid cold war story with a few twists. It also delved into Sister Boniface's relationship with her parents. Her father was not pleased that she chose to go to a convent.

Sister B is more prominent but yet another gay plot - 3 in 5 episodes (yawn)!

It is nice to have Sister Boniface more prominent in this episode - I sometimes feel she is more of a secondary character, despite being the lead. It is really fun to see some of her background story and her imaginations / flashbacks are fun as usual. There are a few more twists in the story, rather than just trying to make a point about society, as can sometimes by the fault when tackling trending plots. However the series is missing a previously ongoing dimension / story arc since the events of Season 2 Episode 2 - so I'm not enjoying the show quite as much with that element / set up removed.
