Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

MGM and Eon Productions’ No Time to Die has come to represent something greater than just simply Daniel Craig’s final turn in the tuxedo.
Say what you will about Tenet, but No Time to Die‘s long path and long wait to the big screen serves as a symbol of the survival of theatrical releases; a rising phoenix for that sector of the motion picture industry which has not only been encroached upon by streaming, but saw movies theaters completely go dark during the pandemic in 2020 though the onset of 2021.

Raymond Benson and Peter Janson-Smith in Krakow.
By Raymond Benson
Peter Janson-Smith passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, at the age of 93. He was a giant in the world of British publishing, a major figure in that arena for nearly seventy years. Serious James Bond fans will know him as Ian Fleming’s literary agent, the man who spearheaded the exploitation of Fleming’s 007 novels around the world from 1956 until Peter’s retirement in 2002.
On a personal level, Peter’s death is a great loss. For me, he was a mentor, a friend, a teacher, and someone I called my “English dad.” He was instrumental in the research for my 1984 book, The James Bond Bedside Companion, and he hired me to write the continuation James Bond novels in the mid-90s. In short, I owe much of my career to him.

Director Brian Helgeland’s Legend (2015) tells the based-on true story of Ronald and Reggie Kray: twins (both played by Tom Hardy), East End boys, racketeers, murderers, icons. The Krays were shaped during the 1960s, a post World War II boom for England. They came to symbolise the smartly dressed gangster for a new youth-orientated generation. They had money and they wanted to flaunt it – and that meant suits and a lot of jewellery.
Costume designer for Legend, Caroline Harris, boasting over 20 years experience in both film and television with credits such as Mr Nice (2010), Red Riding (2009) and Fleming (2014), here chats exclusively to Clothes on Film about her work on the project:
Legend is not set during the ‘swinging sixties’; there is still an air of long-established formality present, especially in nightclubs in casinos.
How did you approach your overall representation of the 1960s?
The 1960s was an entire decade and fashion changed and developed throughout.

Peter Bart and Mike Fleming Jr. worked together for two decades at Daily Variety. In this occasional column, two old friends get together and grind their axes, mostly on the movie business.
Fleming: I found it interesting that audiences turned up their noses at A Walk Among The Tombstones, a thriller that had what should have been all you need for a hit — Liam Neeson on a one-sheet, holding a gun. The filmmaker Scott Frank made a throwback to the ’70s films he grew up loving. The title didn’t help: didn’t it evoke memories of being dragged to the cemetery to pay posthumous respects to Grandpa? In my view, it got maligned unfairly by critic squeamishness over grisly scenes that weren’t there. Kenny Turan called it Eli Roth torture porn, though Roth told me last week the critic told him he’d never actually watched a Roth film.

Dominic Cooper has been around long enough in the business to make his mark and offer audiences a familiar face who is always likely to deliver a memorable performance. Having recently plied his trade as James Bond author Ian Fleming in the impressive television series, Fleming, plus shifting into gear with the upcoming Need For Speed, we look back at six of Cooper’s best performances from times gone past.
The Devil’s Double
It takes a strong actor to forge an unforgettable character on screen but Cooper showed his chameleon-like acting abilities with 2011′s The Devil’s Double as he took on his most challenging task yet – tackling two separate roles in one film. Portraying both the crazed loose cannon son of Saddam Hussein and the man who was forced into becoming his double, the man himself proved adept in switching between the two polar opposites and delivered a commendable overall performance.

Actor who plays real-life Moneypenny in Sky Atlantic drama says she has 'no interest' in 007 – and she's 'bored' by Sean Connery
She may be playing the real-life Moneypenny in Sky Atlantic's Fleming, but actor Anna Chancellor has revealed she doesn't even like James Bond. The Sun reports that the The Hour and Four Weddings and a Funderal actor said: "I can't say I've seen all the films. I have no interest in them." She added: "It'a a boy's fantasy. I'm bored by Sean Connery. He doesn't do it for me." However, she said of the Sky drama: "I like the drama itself. Ian Fleming's interesting, the era's interesting." Monkey hopes she's not bored by costume drama: she is joining the cast of ITV's Downton Abbey for its upcoming fifth season.

BBC's stylized retelling of the life of Ian Fleming came to a close tonight when "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond" aired its final episode. The four-part mini-series chronicled everything from Fleming's work with the Royal Navy to his troubles relationship with his mother.
This work was adapted off biographies about Fleming's life, and BBC America clearly presented how reported aspects of the author's history inspired his James Bond novels. In fact, in many ways Fleming was Bond in the flesh, even down to his real-life Bond girl, Ann O'Neill.
"Fleming" felt in many ways like the Bond project that will help tide fans over for the next official film, currently referred to as "Bond 24." That movie has a tentative Nov. 6, 2015 release date in the United States.

Dominic Cooper ''really went for it'' in sex scenes for 'Fleming'. The 'Mamma Mia!' star has taken on the role of James Bond creator Ian Fleming in the new series alongside 'Sherlock' actress Lara Pulver, and the actor claims the pair put everything into their performances. He said: ''When sex scenes help the development of the story or the character, you have to throw yourself into them. You have to be brave and very trusting of who you're doing them with - and you have to really go for it.'' The 35-year-old actor stars in the Sky Atlantic show - which is...

"Everything I write has a precedent in truth."
That Sky Atlantic's Fleming opts to open with this particular quote from the James Bond author is, intentionally or not, deeply ironic.
In actual fact, Fleming bears very little resemblance to reality - the script by John Brownlow and Don MacPherson takes huge liberties with the truth, using only the bare bones of Ian Fleming's life story to prop up a glamorous and glossy piece of escapism.
Fleming may have seen himself as a James Bond figure, but the reality was very different - Fleming then is the author's life story as he perhaps would have liked it told. This is an action-packed take on his life - packed full of romance and dramatic incident. This is a world in which Ian Fleming looked like Dominic Cooper.

Dominic Cooper and Lara Pulver talk Sky Atlantic's Fleming in a new Digital Spy video interview.
Cooper plays James Bond's creator Ian Fleming in the four-part biopic, with Pulver cast as his future wife Ann O'Neill.
In the DS video, the pair talk the complex relationship that Fleming had with his most famous creation.
"Bond achieved all Ian's failings," Cooper says. "His vivid, wonderful imagination led him to create this person who he was really desperate to be."
Fleming is also described by its stars as a glamorised account of Fleming's early life, rather than a "detailed biographical account".
"It's a version of what he thought his life should have been," explains Cooper.
Fleming begins tonight at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.

The scent and sweat of a film set can be nauseating first thing in the morning. But this is no ordinary location - Digital Spy is stood on the sweeping set of Sky Atlantic's Fleming in the grand city of Budapest.
Back in January 2013, the Fleming crew are staging an elaborate ballroom sequence that wouldn't look out of place in one of the films that Ian Fleming's James Bond novels inspired.
Fleming is a biopic of Bond's creator tinged with the style and sensibility of the 007 movies, though director Mat Whitecross tells DS and other assembled press that he was keen for the four-part drama to avoid parody or pastiche.
"It's about the guy who created Bond, but you don't want to riff on it too much," says Whitecross, the filmmaker behind Ian Dury movie biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and the Stone Roses-inspired Spike Island.

Review Rob Smedley 12 Feb 2014 - 22:00
Sky's glossy four-part Ian Fleming biopic is a sexy affair. Here's Rob's review of episode one...
This review contains spoilers.
Ian Fleming was good at sex. Writing it, that is. And not just in the way James Bond bedded women with the frequency of a man allergic to standing up. Fleming made sure everything in 007's literary adventures was writ sexy: destinations, clothes, food, drink, cars, planes, even décor... everything in Bond's life was veneered with the seductive, the alluring. It still is. Well, you only live twice, why not make it fun?
It was an especially potent cocktail when he first introduced Bond's 'shagnanigans' to the grey British public in 1953. It was the post-war era of austerity, when rationing was still in place and most people hadn't ventured further than Clacton-on-Sea, and even then that was only for some thoroughly workmanlike, 'best undergarments,...

If you know the name James Bond, you likely know the name Ian Fleming, too.
All the "official" movies about licensed-to-kill Agent 007 note his creator, the novelist whose experiences as a World War II naval intelligence officer informed the spy's adventures. His story has been told before - as in the 1990 TV movie "Spymaker: The Secret Life of Ian Fleming," which starred Bond portrayer Sean Connery's son Jason - but it's revisited in the four-part BBC America miniseries "Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond," which starts a weekly run Wednesday, Jan. 29.
Dominic Cooper ("Captain America: The First Avenger," "Mamma Mia!") plays Fleming as an adventurous, romantic pseudo-Bond. "It's really hard to go back and remember what you knew and what you learned doing the job," Cooper tells Zap2it. "I knew that kind of iconic image of him smoking a cigarette, and what he had done and achieved.

Appearing at BBC America's TCA panel for the upcoming mini-series "Fleming," actor Dominic Cooper also spoke a bit about his role in Duncan Jones' upcoming "Warcraft" film based on the famous "World of Warcraft" franchise.
Despite the video game origins of the property, he tells Crave Online that it was the quality of the film's writing that drew him to the project:
"The script. I saw it and I don't know it as a video game, so you can read what you like about the video game. You can read all those amazing characters on the intricate detail of what the characters are worth and what they can achieve and what they can do, but in this, the story is great.
It's when they make the video games and they think that they can just be sold on the idea and the fact that they are successful video games.
