- With the FBI closing in, Joe puts his final plan into action. Central to those plans is to eliminate Claire but it's also clear that his acolytes will do anything for him. They leave the house and go off in several directions. Joe, Emma and Jacob - with Claire as their prisoner - take a suburban family hostage while awaiting nightfall. Jacob is unsure of his own plans for the future. Other members of the cult head in to Havenport to wreak havoc. Ryan and the FBI finally arrive at the house but too late as Joe and he others have fled. Joe has one last attack in mind.—garykmcd
- Joe convalesces from his Claire-inflicted stab wound and entertains himself watching video of Ryan in bed with his follower Molly from 2011. On tape, Ryan pauses to take a swig of booze and Molly tells him booze will kill him.
"You can't kill me, I'm already dead," Ryan says. Joe fixates on it.
Later, Joe anxiously goes over a plan with Emma. He notices she's scared of him and he apologizes. Joe's guzzling booze to cope with his pain.
At the local sheriff's station, they get word that Roderick is still in surgery. Joey gave a description of the compound and the FBI and Marshals are looking for it.
At the compound, Joe leads a group prayer: "In death there is life, in death there is love, in death there is everything."
He tells his follower Amy to be strong and checks with another that they're all ready. They've trained for this. Timing will be important. Alex assures Joe they'll get him and Claire out of the house safely. Aaron is ready to play his part.
In the hall, Jacob corners Emma and tells him Joe's plan is crazy. "How do you know that he's not using us, just so he can get out of town?" Jacob asks. He's not sure they can trust Joe, but Emma tells him to suck it up.
Joe, hopped up on pills and booze and still bleeding, pays a visit to Claire upstairs and tells her he can't find a reason to let her "character" live.
The FBI finds property records don't match surveillance footage, they've been doctored. They've found the compound.
The FBI tears through the gate and up to the mansion front door. They bust down the door and sweep the house. It's empty, except for Aaron hanging from a noose.
A husband and wife, Vicki and Phil, pack up to leave town. But Emma and Jacob stop them in the garage and in the house, Joe is there with Claire.
Back at the compound, they've counted 37 different prints. Debra orders searches of cars and boats leaving town.
Debra and Ryan look through the house, including Joe's study. Ryan finds a note from Joe addressed to him, telling him the final chapter has begun. There's a framed photo of Claire with blood on it. Ryan guesses Claire did something to upset Joe. They think she's still safe, giving Ryan the hero the opportunity to save her.
"He's going to give me the opportunity to witness her death," Ryan says. "Only if we let them," Debra says.
Joe ties up Vicki, Phil and Claire in their living room. He tells them they only need their hospitality until nightfall. Joe sits down and makes chitchat with the hostages, but Claire interrupts and tells him not to terrorize them.
Jacob gets anxious waiting and can't believe Alex is on board with the plan. "None of this is what I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be you and me," Jacob tells Emma.
At HQ, they compile faces of people who have visited Joe in prison. Ryan goes outside and looks at the gathered crowd, looking for followers -- Amy is among them. She gives an interview on TV and quotes "The Mask of the Red Death." She ends the interview by stabbing the reporter. Ryan tackles her.
Later, Ryan interrogates Amy, but she only quotes "Annabelle Lee." She asks him if he'll grieve for his love when she dies. He tells her the reporter died. She's cryptic and uncooperative. He asks her if she wants to die, and when she says yes, he throws over the table and grabs her by the throat and holds a gun to her neck. He demands to know why Claire has to die.
"It's so that you can be reborn," she says.
Joe prepares dinner for his hostages. Claire tells Phil and Vicki to remain calm and follow her lead. She tells Joe they can be his messenger, telling Ryan his plans for her. But Joe informs her he's already told Ryan.
Emma finds Jacob sitting in the car in the garage. She apologizes for what she's done to him. He forgives her and kisses her.
Inside at the creepy dinner party, Joe's wound is still bleeding. Claire offers to open the bottle of wine he's struggling with. He debates whether he can trust her, but cuts her loose. She opens the wine, but gives the corkscrew back. Joe asks Phil if he'd die for his wife, then he holds a knife to Phil's neck. He says he would then begs Joe to let his wife go.
Joe taunts Claire with them as an example of what real love is. Joe tells Claire to enjoy dinner since it's her last.
The doorbell rings. It's the police. Phil thinks about yelling, but Joe holds a knife to his throat.
Emma answers the door, but the cops are suspicious so she shoots them without hesitation. Joe goes to check the front door. Claire, still unbound, bashes him over the head with a wine bottle then picks up a fork and jabs it in his wound, twisting it.
Claire frees Phil and Vicki and they run away through the woods.
Joe tells Emma to go hunt down Claire.
Back at HQ, Ryan tries to figure out the meaning of "Mask of the Red Death," which is about people who feared a plague and sought refuge at a palace but died anyway. They wonder if it's mass suicide. Weston suggests that could mean the evacuation center.
With night falling, Debra addresses the troops outside the community center. They plan to go inside and do a low key sweep of the 100 or so people who voluntarily turned out.
Ryan, Debra and Mike go inside and look at the gathered people, trying to spot followers. Ryan recognizes one man from outside the police station earlier, it's Alex. He casually walks over to him, but doesn't get far. Alex throws his arms in the air, the lights go out and a woman bashes another over the head. Several other followers go through the crowd stabbing people. Mike kills one and Debra kills another, then another in the hallway.
Meanwhile, Claire, Vicki and Phil run through the woods and hail a passing car, but Phil recognizes it as theirs. Emma and Jacob get out and chase down Claire, but Phil and Vicki get away.
Back at the community center in the dark, Debra does a sweep of the halls and pauses when she sees a man. Suddenly Alex comes up behind her and grabs her. He pins her arms while the other man advances on her with a knife.
Emma and Jacob bring Claire to a dock, where Joe is waiting. The FBI is totally distracted by the murder and mayhem in town. Joe drags Claire to the boat and tosses her in the cabin, locking her in. Emma and Jacob watch from the dock as Joe drives the boat away. They get back in the car. Emma wants to go meet Alex as planned, but Jacob tells her they don't have to die for Joe.
Jacob plans to leave, with or without her. He tells her he loves her and she says she loves him. They kiss. Then she says she loves Joe and doesn't know how to love them both -- and she slits Jacob's throat.
Back at the community center, there are five civilian casualties and nine cult members dead with others escaping. Debra Parker is missing.
Alex and another man drag bound Debra into the woods and put her in a coffin in the ground. They nail it shut and cover it with dirt as she screams.
