While this docu is an important warning to mothers about gestational diabetes and ideal weight before and during pregnancy. I couldn't help thinking how it could have been so much better. The mother featured was coached on lifestyle changes, really wanted to change and seemed to try to follow ALL the advice given. And apparently failed to make much weight loss progress despite great effort. I was screaming at the screen, "Don't give up your complex carbs!" and "Don't eat the f'n chicken!"
If only mother's who would do ANYTHING for their babies were given better nutritional advice, they would do so much better. Please look into a Plant Based Diet to help achieve the desired weight before during and after pregnancy. Not vegan, but sound Whole Food Plant Nutrition. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, Dr. John McDougal, Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Joel Kahn, and many other sources of info. If the mother in the docu had put the same great effort into a plant based diet, its likely her pre-diabetic risk could have been reversed within 2-3 months, as well as easily dropping weight towards normal. Cutting out processed food and complex carbs in great. But she should have been eating oatmeal, fruit, beans, legumes, potatoes (whole), veggies, nuts, seeds and ditching the chicken. I felt really sad she wasn't given this advice. See Dr. Neal Barnard's book Reversing Diabetes.
