Bollywood comes to Bradford
Prismark103 April 2015
Bizet's Carmen gets the Bollywood treatment as it gets transplanted to the streets of Bradford and broadcast as a live BBC production.

Carmen (Preeya Kalidas) is a young waitress from Bradford who dreams of making it big in Mumbai. She seduces Don a security guard who falls in love with her and spurns his fiancée despite the protestations of his work colleague.

Don is unaware that Carmen is totally starstruck and has is his sights AD the Indian film actor who has rolled into town as part of a Bollywood roadshow. Carmen's wish may yet be fulfilled if she can get Ad to notice her via a flash mob dance but tragedy awaits.

There are plenty of dance routines and modern interpretations of western and Indian songs all fused bhangra style, as well as Bizet's music. There is even interaction with the audience.

It all feels a little experimental with a multi ethnic cast. These shows never fully grab you but you have to admire that it is a giant undertaking.
