- It's 1946 and Christopher Foyle, still happily retired, returns from his travels to the USA. He's barely set foot on the dock however when he drawn into a meeting with Hilda Pierce, now with MI-5. He's asked to assist the Security Service in investigating a possible spy ring known as the Eternity Ring. He's not keen but agrees to help when they show him a photograph of Sam - now Sam Wainwright since her marriage to aspiring politician Adam Wainwright - handing over an envelope to a known Soviet agent. In July 1946, Foyle sails home from the US where he sought to bring the industrialist, Paige, to justice. At the docks, Foyle is met by an strong-armed emissary of MI-5. Foyle learns Paige killed himself and the FBI is looking for him: he can either help MI-5 or go back to America. An old contact, Hilda Pierce, tells Foyle about the Cold War. Her boss, Sir William Chambers, tells Foyle of a Soviet defector who brought news of a supposed spy organization. MI-5 asks Foyle to use his talents to investigate this matter. When two former employees are in the MI-5 investigation radar, the quest becomes more personal. A sneering MI-5 agent initially tells Foyle that he does not understand "tradecraft." But, once Foyle is on the scent of a case, Foyle will drive everything in his path, including spies, liars and MI-5 agents, directly to the hounds in order to uncover the truth.—LA-Lawyer
