Past imperfect
This was the best two-parter I've seen in the first series of this Danish crime series. Grittier than other episodes, the story had many layers but holding to the thread, persistence is repaid with a dramatic and fitting, if inevitable climax.
I like the way the story started with Dicte's interest in a local, prominent, mould-breaking female politician who even while courting publicity, refuses to give much away about her past. When said politician narrowly avoids being blown up in a bomb explosion in a local shop, literally in front of Dicte's eyes, the narrative intriguingly diverts away from this character to a large extent as a spider's web from the past is spun, taking in Dicte's new-found son Peter, his criminal past on a murder charge, his autistic girlfriend for whom he takes the murder rap, an acquitted child molester at a children's home years ago and a childhood blood pact now being enacted in the present day by the now grown gang of three.
Away from the thriller content, the character development continues in a skillful if not always credible manner, the relationships, interrelationships and coincidences among all the participants seem a bit stretched at times.. Dicte's midwife best friend is now dating her ex-husband, her other best friend Ida-Marie blows hot and cold with Detective Wagner on a burgeoning romance and her own relationship with her newspaper's photographer, his marriage breaking down too, blossoms to realisation and fruition. There's humour too, especially in Wagner's testy partnership with his lesbian sidekick detective.
Nevertheless, my liking for this series and its core group of characters grows. It helps when the lead crime story has conviction and resonance, as here. I'll be tuning in to future series for sure.
