Xbox has recently announced the closure of several game development studios to cut costs. This move has made the company the latest to face criticism and backlash from the gaming community, taking all the negative attention away from PlayStation.
It is always disheartening to see studios shut down due to business affairs, especially when they don’t deserve it. Microsoft’s recent acquisition spree was questionable from the start and made it even more so when it bought them just to shut them down years later.

Fremantle revenues dipped almost 10% during Q1 but owner Rtl is hoping for a bounceback and has set company growth targets for full-year 2024.
Rtl put the Poor Things and Got Talent producer’s weak Q1 performance, which saw its revenue tumble by 9.2% year-on-year to €395M ($424m), down to “timing effects in the UK, Italy and Germany” of show launches.
An improvement is expected during this quarter, Rtl added, pointing to the launch of a second season of BBC drama The Responder and new BBC series Nightsleeper, as well as season 19 of America’s Got Talent for NBC and Race To Survive: New Zealand for the USA Network in the U.S. Fremantle will also start realizing its €200M investment in Death in Paradise content group Asacha and 80% of Singapore’s Beach House Pictures.

Revenues at Bertelsmann’s Luxembourg-based Rtl Group, a media giant which owns Fremantle, rose 2.6% to €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion), for the first quarter of 2024, driven by buoyant TV advertising and streaming.
However, this was offset by decreased revenues at the group’s global content business. Fremantle revenues were down 9.2% to €395 million (Q1/2023: €435 million), due to what Rtl describes as “timing effects in the U.K., Italy and Germany.”
“Revenue from Fremantle is recognized when a show or series is delivered to its clients, i.e. the broadcasters and streaming services. One example: The German version of ‘Idols’ (‘Deutschland Sucht den Superstar’) has been on air for many years in the first quarter of the year. In 2024, the show will be on air in autumn [fall] – thus the revenue will be recognized in the second half of 2024,” an Rtl spokesperson told Variety.

Reba McEntire is back on network television.
NBC has handed her sitcom Happy’s Place a series order. It comes after the network handed season three renewals to Lopez vs. Lopez and Night Court and canceled Extended Family after one season.
The comedy sees McEntire play Bobbie, who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.
The multi-cam series also stars Belissa Escobedo, Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk and Rex Linn.

Exclusive: A little over a month after Season 3 of Resident Alien wrapped its run on Syfy, the future of the quirky sci-fi comedy-drama is up in the air. And there is some intrigue over where the series starring Alan Tudyk would continue should it get a fourth season.
I hear there are talks about Resident Alien moving from Syfy to NBCU cable sibling USA Network, which currently doesn’t have scripted originals besides Chucky, which it shares with Syfy. According to sources, a return to Syfy appears unlikely, so USA is Resident Alien‘s only feasible destination within NBCU, whose UCP division produces the adaptation of the comic book by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.
But a potential Season 4 pickup by USA would come with a major budget reduction, as much as $500,000 an episode, which will be challenging, I hear.

At some point I may stop sounding like a broken record, but for the moment, as a box office analyst covering the entertainment industry, it is hard not to hit the pessimism alarm. The summer season kicked off with an unfortunate whimper as Universal's very well-liked "The Fall Guy" opened to less than $30 million on opening weekend -- well below projections. That is, without exaggeration, the worst start to summer in decades. Sad to say, it isn't going to get any better any time soon. And I don't just mean through 2024. This past weekend, and other recent industry trends, have shown us that Hollywood has no clear, easy path forward. This summer merely seems like it's going to be illustrative of the larger problem.
Let's start with "The Fall Guy." We're talking about a movie starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, coming off of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," respectively. Already well-liked stars,...

In the world of late night, there are sore losers and then there are whatever you’d call Seth Meyers’ response to losing the 2024 WGA Award for Best Comedy/Variety Talk Series to good friend/fellow host/frequent stand-up partner John Oliver.
Oliver played guest to Meyers on Late Night Monday, where the two talked about their ongoing residency at New York City’s Beacon Theatre—and the awkward things that can happen when the show has ended and they turn the stage into a space for a no-holds-barred Q&a with the audience.
While Oliver noted that “we do tell people that they can, and possibly should, leave” before the interactive portion begins, Meyers said that he really enjoys this part of the show. He then explained how “a very funny thing happened [during] the last Q&a. Both of our shows had been nominated for the Writers Guild Award,...

This February, French actress and filmmaker Judith Godrèche helped ignite a new spark in her country’s #MeToo reckoning. Early in the month, the lauded star filed two different rape complaints against a pair of French directors: first, against Benoît Jacquot, for “predation” and “violent rape of a minor under 15 years old committed by a person in authority” (via Variety), the second, against Jacques Doillon, alleging he raped her twice when she was 15 and starring in his “La fille de 15 ans” (via Variety).
By February 22, Variety reported on the rising reckoning, partially due to Godrèche’s new allegations, noting that “France’s major producers guilds have also issued a statement demanding the National Film Board (Cnc) and the Minister of Culture to put specific guidelines in place.” And, one day later, Godrèche appeared at France’s Césars ceremony to deliver a speech to encourage people, particularly those inside the entertainment industry,...

Other nominees in the category included novelist and essayist Zadie Smith, who was nominated for her New York Review of Books review of the 2022 film Tar, and The New Yorker‘s theater critic Vinson Cunningham for a number of reviews that evinced “a formidable knowledge of the stage and the mechanics of performance along with canny observations on the human condition.”

Primary Trust, Eboni Booth’s play that was given an Off Broadway staging by Roundabout Theatre Company last summer, won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama today.
The play was described by the Pulitzer board as “A simple and elegantly crafted story of an emotionally damaged man who finds a new job, new friends and a new sense of worth, illustrating how small acts of kindness can change a person’s life and enrich an entire community.”
The critically acclaimed play follows Kenneth, a 38-year-old bookstore worker who, in the words of Roundabout’s synopsis, “spends his evenings sipping mai tais at the local tiki bar. When he’s suddenly laid off, Kenneth finally begins to face a world he’s long avoided – with transformative and even comical results.”
“This is the story of friendship,” Kenneth says in the play. “Of how I got a new job. A story of love and balance and time.

GOP Rep. Mike Collins Praises Ole Miss Counter-Protesters Who Taunted Black Pro-Palestinian Activist
Counter-protesters mocked pro-Palestine demonstrators at the University of Mississippi. In footage posted online, white students were caught on video taunting a black protester. Rep. Mike Collins (R-Georgia) praised the white students’ actions.
“Ole Miss taking care of business,” Collins posted on X.
Viewers criticized the white students and Collins’ stance on the situation, calling him out for supporting “racist” actions. In the video, one white student made monkey noises and obscene gestures at a female black graduate student. Police escorted the student while the others taunted her.
University of Mississippi sociology professor James M. Thomas posted to X, “Students were calling for an end to genocide. They were met with racism.”
Separate footage also showed a crowd of about 200 people singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” over pro-Palestine chants. The students called for the end of Israel’s attacks on Gaza and for the United States to stop funding weapons. Some counter-protesters waved Trump 2024 flags.

It’s not over ’til it’s over. And Kevin Costner insists that he’s not necessarily done with creator Taylor Sheridan or Yellowstone.
The fifth season of Yellowstone has been set to be the show’s last, with alleged scheduling conflicts that have star Kevin Costner leaving the show. Right now, Yellowstone is planning to air its final episodes in November before launching a new, Costner-free spinoff series, 2024, in December.
But Costner, who plays patriarch John Dutton on the show, claims those final episodes haven’t come together just yet.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his latest film, Horizon: An American Saga, Costner said that he still hasn’t connected with Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan on making those final episodes.
“No, we haven’t [talked],” Costner said. However, he added that he’s open to working with Sheridan in the future, whether it’s Yellowstone-related or something new.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we take another gander at the wide-open drama races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to our favorite 2024 Emmys genre: drama! I kid, of course, but there is something still dramatic about this year’s drama categories – even as we (I) wait with bated breath to see which limited series blinks and joins the party in these final days, pre-printed FYC ads be damned. For now, we’re all operating on the idea that “The Crown” is the favorite here, but that feels like it’s operating on more vibes than reality. The final season of the Emmy Award-winning series was certainly better received than its preceding season… but it was a far cry from the sweeping fourth season.

John Carpenter wasn’t that impressed with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”
The “Thing” director called Nolan’s Best Picture-winning historical drama just “Ok” in an interview for journalist Larry Fitzmaurice’s “Last Donut of the Night” newsletter.
“‘Oppenheimer’ was Ok. It was alright,” Carpenter said. “Everyone’s praising it as the movie of the century — I don’t know about that.”
But is Carpenter a fan of Nolan’s films in general?
“Yeah, I guess, sure,” he added.
The director instead pivoted and pointed to another 2024 Academy Award contender, saying, “I don’t want to talk about things that I haven’t enjoyed. I liked ‘Maestro’ a great deal. I thought that was terrific.”
And it turns out that Carpenter wasn’t crazy about the “Barbenheimer” craze as a whole. The filmmaker told the “Last Donut of the Night” newsletter his thoughts on “Barbie,” simply stating, “Did I like it?...
