Exclusive: ABC Signature has acquired The Redemption of Al Sharpton, the recent Esquire profile of the civil rights activist by Pulitzer Prize winner Mitchell S. Jackson, to develop as a limited series. No talent is attached at this point but the intention is for Anthony Anderson to star as Sharpton and executive produce through his Just a Kid from Compton Productions. The company’s Evi Regev also is executive producing the project, now in very early stages, along with Artists First’s E. Brian Dobbins (black-ish). Jackson is getting a producing credit.
For The Redemption of Al Sharpton, published in February, Jackson followed the politician & TV/radio personality around the country “to find out why he keeps going, what he’s still doing, and where his place in history will be.”
The profile looks to reconcile Sharpton’s image as “a beacon of the civil-rights movement” and as “a loudmouth in a tracksuit,...

Chicago – The Season 18 Finale of Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc) is the Hong Kong Showcase from April 19th-21st, 2024, featuring a Lifetime Achievement Award for the legendary Rebecca Pan, Hk filmmakers/actors and current Hong Kong cinema.
In March 1972, Rebecca Pan self-financed the production of the first ever Mandarin musical, “Pai Niang Niang,” and performed it 60 times at the Princess Theatre (in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui district). This is a piece of Hk art and cultural history, and an important milestone of Rebecca’s long career. This work used the Broadway musical model to adapt the famous myth “Legend of the White Snake,” and brought together Eastern and Western theatrical styles for the first time.

While video surveillance shows she had a scuffle with an extremist protestor who’d been lurking outside the building for some time, and her son confesses to the crime, it turns out that her killer is someone unexpected. After the heaviness of the previous episode, Will Trent will return to heartwarming drama, levity, and humor in this upcoming installment.
The series excels at balancing both kinds of cases and character arcs, and spoilers for Will Trent Season 2 Episode 6 tease that Will will finally meet and connect with his long-lost uncle, Antonio Miranda.
Elsewhere in the episode, the Gbi and the Apd team up to solve a judge's murder, so they work together for two episodes in a row. From the spoiler photos, this case looks entertaining.
At the end of Will Trent Season 2 Episode 5, Will's Uncle Antonio reached out to him. Antonio Miranda is as curious about his nephew as Will is about him.
John Ortiz guest-stars as Antonio Miranda, who seems kind and charismatic and is eager to bond with Will.
While I'm anxious for Will to have a positive male role model, it feels like Lucy's brother got a total rewrite.

Jamie Foxx is returning to Fox’s game show Beat Shazam after missing the show’s most recent season following a health scare.
The network announced Monday that Foxx and daughter Corinne will resume hosting duties on the music-based game show, whose seventh season premieres May 28. After a medical issue during filming of Netflix’s movie Back in Action in April 2023, Foxx was hospitalized and underwent a long recovery process.
Foxx hasn’t disclosed the nature of the medical issue, but in his first public appearance since then — at a Critics Choice Association event in December — he hinted at some serious effects: “I couldn’t do that six months ago, I couldn’t actually walk to [the stage],” he said at the time. He also joked that “I saw the tunnel, I didn’t see the light. It was hot in that tunnel too — I don’t know where I was going.

We Are Family viewers showed concern when the game show’s usual host was missing from the finale, as he was in the emergency room a month ago.
Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson has hosted the game show since its Fox debut.
The multi-time Primetime Emmy nominee typically appears along with his mother, Doris Anderson, and they’ve been well-received as a duo.
Doris was there, but her son was noticeably absent from the big episode on Wednesday evening, as fellow actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale filled in.
The game show’s season finale was “Joel Control” ahead of the Season 2 premiere of his new comedy series, Animal Control, which arrives on Fox on March 6.
It was also another hosting gig for Joel, who previously filled in for Ken Jeong on Fox’s I Can See Your Voice.

The February 21 episode of We Are Family brought three more performers and their famous relatives from the sports, music, and acting world. This Fox celeb guessing game challenges 100 audience members to decide who is behind the “Super Sphere” based on clues and the family member on stage singing. Those who are correct split the prize money in the first two rounds with one getting a crack at $150,000 in the third. Starting things off were Dominic and his mom Niecy Nash-Betts. The Emmy winner sang alongside her oldest on “Can You Stand the Rain” by New Edition following his solo of “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson with Bruno Mars. Dominic initially tipped off the players by saying he was worried about forgetting the lyrics. A nod to Nash-Betts’ hosting gig of Don’t Forget the Lyrics. Former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin made a surprise appearance on the latest episode of Fox’s singing competition show, We Are Family.
Hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, the show has non-famous relatives of celebrities showcase their singing talent and later join their secret famous family member for a duet on stage. The studio audience competes to guess the celebrity and win up to $150,000.
Palin, known for her previous appearance on The Masked Singer as the Bear, emerged in a sparkly silver dress to perform a duet of Garth Brooks‘ country classic Friends in Low Places with her non-famous cousin, Jd. The performance marked Palin’s return to reality singing competitions, after her memorable rendition of Sir Mix-a-Lot‘s “Baby Got Back” on The Masked Singer.

Watch out, Ken Jeong: Your “Community” co-star Joel McHale is coming for your “Kensday” crown. Through a series of fill-in gigs, McHale — who also stars on Fox’s sitcom “Animal Control” — will be all over Fox’s Wednesday night lineup in the coming weeks.
That’s because McHale is set to fill in for Jeong as guest host of the network’s musical gamer “I Can See Your Voice” on both Wednesday, Feb. 14 and Wednesday, Feb. 21. Then, on Wednesday, Feb. 28, McHale is back — but as guest host on “We Are Family,” filling in for regular host Anthony Anderson. (McHale will host the special two-hour season finale of “We Are Family” in its entirety.)
All of that leads to the Season 2 premiere of “Animal Control” on Wednesday, March 6, on Fox. The network is definitely invested in McHale: On Tuesday, Fox revealed that it had already picked up a Season 3 of “Animal Control.

Fox’s Emmys, hosted by “We Are Family” host Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”), drew 4.3 million viewers on Monday. That number was down 27 percent from the awards show’s last telecast — a Monday night in September 2022 on NBC. It’s a new record low, though as Fox pointed out on Tuesday, it marked the broadcast net’s most-watched Monday unscripted telecast in more than eight years (a June 2015 “So You Think You Can Dance” episode). Quite a few asterisks there, but fair is fair.
The 2022 Emmys averaged 5.9 million total viewers, which at the time set a new record low — awards shows have been trending this way since on-demand streaming (further) fragmented audiences. The 2021 Emmy Awards, which aired on CBS on a Sunday, averaged 7.9 million total viewers. CBS tends to draw the most overall viewers on linear television, a fact the Golden Globes learned last week.

Awards shows are self-congratulatory parties that rarely feel like they're actually made for the audiences at home, but the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards actually felt like a worthy celebration of the artform of television. Because it's a special anniversary year, they made the effort to really pay tribute to the television we love and the people who create it, and it made for a relatively safe but extremely heartfelt 2024 Emmy awards. It was an incredible night for diversity, with numerous well-deserved, historic wins for people of color across a range of categories, and everyone actually seemed like they were having a good time.
The Golden Globes are more meme-worthy, but the Emmys feel like the Oscars of TV, just with less irritating self-importance. Sure, the Emmys detail the impact of television on us all, but since TV has always been cinema's little brother, there's a bit more deprecation and self-awareness.

Four months later than originally scheduled due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards finally showed up Monday night. Fast-paced, packed with reunions, tributes and a Best Talk Show win by Trevor Noah for a Daily Show he exited in late 2022, the Anthony Anderson-hosted ceremony was skillfully solid and eminently predictable.
Ambitious, the Jesse Collins Entertainment-produced endeavor had a lot of good moments in a compressed award season that has already left most of us dizzy. To that end, in the paper cut of criticism, it wouldn’t have hurt if the Emmys had taken their foot off the pedal a bit and given the Fox-broadcasted show some time to breathe.

Anthony Anderson took the stage at the top of the Emmys on Monday night to open the much-delayed awards show on Fox with a musical number paying tribute to hit TV theme songs alongside his mother, Doris Bowman, Blink-182’s Travis Barker and actor Christina Applegate.
The opening segment took place in Anderson’s “living room” set, with the “Black-ish” star entering following a title card for “Mister Anderson’s Neighborhood.” Upon his entrance, Anderson got a round of cheers — and another set when he mentioned the Emmys were taking place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Welcome to the time warp.
Technically, the awards being doled out live from the Peacock Theater at 5 p.m. Pst are the 2023 Emmy awards. The telecast had been scheduled to air back in September, but, like so much else in Hollywood, the Emmys were sidelined by the strikes.
