Before it's time for us to serve up some turkey Stateside, here are my thoughts on two recent indie genre films I’ve had the pleasure of checking out: Megan Freels Johnston’s horror comedy The Ice Cream Truck and Jamie Dagg’s crime thriller Sweet Virginia, featuring Jon Bernthal.
The Ice Cream Truck: Akin to an early Tim Burton-esque take on the horrors of suburbia and adulthood, Johnston’s The Ice Cream Truck is a slightly absurd yet wholly relatable exploration of the anxieties of modern women, particularly those who don’t necessarily fit in with the typical “Bake Sale Moms” out there who always seem to have “it” together, living out their existences happily defined by their roles within their respective households.
In The Ice Cream Truck, we are introduced to Mary (Deanna Russo) who is anything but confident in the woman she has become over the years.

‘Quarry’ Exclusive Trailer & Poster: A Vietnam Veteran Becomes a Contract Killer Upon Returning Home
Cinemax has had great success with its recent run of original programming. First, there was Steven Soderbergh’s historical medical drama “The Knick,” which concluded its second season last year, and then supernatural horror series “Outcast,” which will conclude its debut season on August 12th. Now, the network is set to debut its new crime drama “Quarry,” loosely based on the series of novels by mystery writer Max Allan Collins.

I promised daily Film Bitch Award nominations and I aim to deliver since we were supposed to technically be done by now. The best laid plans. Yesterday I shared male acting choices and jazzed up two Oscar charts. Today half of the visual categories have gone up and I've updated the correlative three Oscar charts, too.

I'm so disappointed that Academy voters skipped Sicario's Joe Walker in this category so I've rectified that obvious error. Talk about sustaining the tension masterfully for two hours. He's best known for his work with director Steve McQueen and was Oscar-nominated a couple of years ago for 12 Years a Slave. He had a good year since he also edited Blackhat which people found lacking in the emotion and story department but which was quite fine on a craft level. Two editors we interviewed here Nathan Nugent (Room) and Affonso Gonçalves (Carol) are also honored.

After a torturous wait to find out the identity of their new captain — amazing the way two minutes can feel like three months, no? — the cops of Brooklyn Nine-Nine finally meet Holt’s replacement in the Season 3 premiere: Seth Dozerman, played by Saturday Night Live vet Bill Hader.

Of course, it only takes 120 seconds for us to realize what showrunner Mike Schur meant when he said Capt. Dozerman’s arrival would be “far from the final surprise” in the premiere. After delivering quite the monologue about work ethic and efficiency,...

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this season of Mistresses is really taking the ladies out of their comfort zones. In "The Best Laid Plans," Karen continues to navigate her new polyamorous relationship with Vivian out of town, Joss gets in way too deep with her friendship with Calista and April breaks ground with Lucy despite her mother's visit. And I'm happy to report that Harry is sharing equal air time with the ladies this season. After his one-night stand with Niko, he learns that she is Ellis' mistress and doesn't want his career to be over.

TV show trailer for The CW‘s The 100, Blood Must Have Blood, Pt. 2. Both (remaining) sides of the waning Weather War resort to playing dirty, [...]

It was a great night for Xavier Dolan at the Canadian Screen Awards today, where the wunderkind's latest film, "Mommy," won nine awards, nearly sweeping every category. The only fields the film lost in were crafts categories conceded the critically reviled (but it's Canadian!) "Pompeii," which took home five awards. The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry, but somehow movie villains manage to pull theirs off. At least until the very last minute, when the heroes swoop in to save the day just as they’re about to succeed. Which is a surprise, since increasingly the evil schemes put together by bad guys are needlessly complicated. Whatever happened to the good old days of kidnapping a good guy’s significant other, tying them to some train tracks, and twiddling your moustache whilst cackling?
Nowadays, in order to completely bamboozle their opponents, film villains will compose absolutely bonkers, lateral thinking puzzles of evil plans, of the sort that even the screenwriter seems to barely understand. And if the person coming up with it can’t make sense of it, what chance do their characters have, eh? Well, as it happens, they absolutely shouldn’t be able to.
