Sgt. Patterson refers to the military looking person he saw videotaping the attack as a "pogue", which is an American military pejorative slang term for non-infantry staff and other support units. It is typically used to refer to non-infantry military personnel that do not have combat experience. In early 20th century civilian culture "pogue" was a pejorative term for gay men that liked anal sex. In the military the term has it origins in World War I where US Marines used it as an insult for fellow servicemen they suspected of being gay and drill instructors adopted it as a term for trainees whom they felt did not have what it took to be a solider. In more recent military history (post Vietnam) it wasn't used as an insult the way it used to be meant, most combat experienced soldiers used it to refer to medical personnel, mechanics and other support staff, and used it as an acronym for Personnel Other than Grunts or Person Of Greater Use Elsewhere. However use of the term has been heavily discouraged in the US military since "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was repealed due to its distasteful and insulting origin.
