Hip-Hop Turns 50. The Grammys Celebrate the Milestone Despite Its Complicated History With the Genre
Hip-hop has had a contentious relationship with the Grammys, but tonight’s 50th anniversary performance was a much-deserved celebration of the genre. The loaded showcase achieved performance co-curator Questlove’s previously stated goal to span the breadth of hip-hop’s 50 years. The Recording Academy has been criticized in the past for controversial award selections in the rap categories, but this performance was a decision that few hip-hop heads could complain about.

Radiohead’s Ok Computer doesn’t turn 25 for another month in the U.K. — and not until July in the U.S. — but guitarist Ed O’Brien commemorated the album in an Instagram post anyway.
O’Brien was inspired to celebrate after seeing BBC Radio 6 Music’s post about the album (and technically, it turns 25 today in Japan). “A few thoughts in no particular order,” he began. “Feels like an age away. 1997 belonged to a different era. We were just kids with unswerving focus and drive. No partying, just...

When Jane Schoenbrun’s “We’re All Going to The World’s Fair” debuted at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, they were not only introduced as a solo filmmaker, but as their true self for the first time. A longtime fixture in New York’s independent film scene, Schoenbrun has worn many hats. They co-created the experimental online variety show “The Eyeslicer,” which featured work from David Lowery, Ari Aster, and Shaka King, among others. They spearheaded the omnibus film “collective:unconscious,” which saw five experimental filmmakers interpreting each other’s dreams. They also launched The Radical Film Fair, an ambitious but short-lived film flea market that connected independent filmmakers, film-lovers, and distributors.
That was all before their “egg cracked,” a shorthand for the moment when a trans person finally comes out to themselves. In true Shoenbrun fashion, “We’re All Going to The World’s Fair” isn’t a straightforward narrative about being trans.

More than two decades after its creation, Radiohead have finally released a studio rendition of “Follow Me Around,” from the upcoming box set Kid A Mnesia.
The track arrives with a video starring Guy Pearce, bringing the lyrics “Nowadays I get panicked/I cease to exist” to reality, as Pearce frantically runs around his apartment to avoid the camera.
Pearce let it slip on Twitter over the weekend that he was included in the video: “It’s not every day you find a free working toaster on the side of the road.

As everyone learned last Thursday, Taylor Swift followed Folklore with a new record, Evermore, a mere five months later. But it’s hardly the first time a major artist has given the world an entirely fresh album very soon after a major release. Here’s a brief history of the fast follow-up in pop (starting in the Seventies, when artists started taking more time between albums) — and the way it could save (or damage) careers.

Thom Yorke has revealed the sound and themes of his upcoming solo album in a cover story for Crack magazine. The album is reportedly being released by Xl Recordings. It will be the Radiohead frontman’s third proper solo LP, and his first since 2014’s Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes.
In a wide-ranging Q&A, Yorke described the new record as an anxiety-fueled electronic nightmare of a dystopian world — in other words, a Thom Yorke album. Author J.G. Ballard, avant-garde musician Scott Walker, and the improvisatory live shows of Flying Lotus all came up as influences,...

Before I Go to Steal: Polish’s Familiar, Bare Bones Genre Trick
It isn’t long after the film’s opening car crash sequence that the essence of Amnesiac comes grinding to an equally violent narrative standstill. The first of his three features set for theatrical release in 2015, director Michael Polish utilizes the blonde iciness of his actress/wife Kate Bosworth for a genre film duplicating the formulas of so many more infamous staples nearly every beat seems lodged in mundane presumptions. Unless audience members are suffering from the same condition promised in the title, there’s nothing remotely fresh or intriguing concerning this kidnapping thriller and its countless moments of generic flourishes.
A man (Wes Bentley) and wife (Bosworth) get into a car accident. He wakes up in their large home filled with mostly empty rooms to find he remembers nothing about or before the accident. He no longer recognizes his wife,...

Kate Bosworth made her first big splash in Hollywood with "Blue Crush," (sorry, not sorry). Since then she's played the iconic Lois Lane, tried her hand in comedies, and explored the world of indie flicks. Her next movie, "Amnesiac," (in Theaters, VOD and iTunes on August 14, 2015) follows a man (Wes Bentley) who wakes up in bed after suffering memory loss from an accident. He then begins to suspect that his wife (Bosworth) may not be his real wife, and that everything he's being told is a lie.
To celebrate her new film, Bosworth told us the five psychological horror-thrillers she is always down to watch.

Twin filmmakers Michael and Mark Polish occupy a special spot in the American indie landscape. Since their strong debut Twin Falls Idaho, a weird little movie about conjoined twins, the brothers have been chugging along surviving in Hollywood, acting and directing series of independent films since the late 90s. They have a very distinctive visual style with a narrative steeped in magic realism while invoking the American West of yesteryears - men in dark suits and fedoras, expansive vistas, etc - my favorite film of theirs being Northfork.Amnesiac, a small film not written by and not starring either Polish, is another unusual solo outing, after Big Sur, a Jack Keruac adaptation in 2013, by Michael Polish as a director.
