- Monrad forces a new constitution through Parliament that incorporates Schleswig into the Danish kingdom, and, as expected, triggers a declaration of war from Prussia. Laust and Peter meet their young comrades in arms, as well as the experienced and mysterious Johan, and get a taste of how real the horrors of war can be. The brothers exchange letters with Inge, but Laust also sends her secret letters.
- King Frederik VII dies, mentally unable to sing the new constitution Monrad helped getting approved in parliament, with a formal annexation of all Schleswig. The brothers both write to Inge, but behind Peter's back, Laust, who had sex with her, also write her under a pseudonym. The new king Frederik VII is unwilling to break all treaties and oppress the German population in its still Prussian southern part, but alluding to popular doubts on his loyalty given the dynasty's German ancestry forces him to sign the diplomatic suicide. All Europe is shocked, the German emperor Wilhelm must allow Bismarck to mobilize the German Confederation and send envoys with an ultimatum to new Danish generalissimo Christian de Meza, who play the piano in dressing gown, hidden in a maze of furniture to prevent infection. The enlisted brothers get scanty field training, mainly idle claims to be the world's best army, with Peter blamed for pigs killed by a gun his superiors didn't realize being loaded, but helped by the legendary 'clairvoyant ghost' veteran Johan Larsen. The baron refuses to buy his coward son Didrich a way out of front duty as a captain, the latter vents his frustration raping gypsy Sofia while proclaiming his 'love' for Inge, both end up pregnant 'in sin'.—KGF Vissers
