Cyril Chamberlain: The Man

Quotes

  • ARP Warden : Don't you two know there's a warning on?

    The Girl : Is there a warning - I didn't know.

The Man : Now look - why should we be the only two not hanging around tonight - everybody else seems to be. And when you go off duty, you go home to your wife, won't you? Well me and my girl's only got about half an hour.

The Girl : And half of it's gone.

ARP Warden : They'll be plenty of shrapnel falling if nothing else. I think you'd be better off undercover.

The Man : That's a matter of opinion.

    [notices medal]

The Man : Oh, old soldier, eh? Where did you get that - Gallipoli?

ARP Warden : No - Ladysmith.

The Man : Oh, Boer War? Blimey, that takes you back a bit, doesn't it?

ARP Warden : Well I better get back on patrol. The guns have started. I still think you'd be better off undercover.

The Man : And I still think that's a matter of opinion.

The Girl : He means Ladysmith Road, doesn't he?

ARP Warden : That's right, Miss.

The Girl : That's our road Bill. At least it used to be when it was there. I thought I recognised you. That gentleman was the one that got me out.

ARP Warden : He got a whole lot of you out that night - he got the George Medal.
