An awful lot like "The Descent".
planktonrules5 July 2014
About a decade ago, "The Descent" debuted. This film was about a group of cave explorers who became trapped and were picked off one by one by an unknown entity. Or, it is possible that they THOUGHT such creatures existed and they killed each other off in the process. A few years later, they made a sequel. Well, if you really, really love these films, Beneath is almost like seeing "The Descent Part III".

Beneath begins at a retirement party for a coal miner. At this party, in addition to everyone getting drunk, the man's daughter (who is a college student) is invited down into the mine in the morning--to see if she's brave enough to go there. Well, she shows up but soon the unexpected occurs--there's an accident and a group of miners (including the lady) are trapped. If this isn't claustrophobic and scary enough, soon they start seeing and hearing things. Are these the ghosts of other miners who died here decades ago, is there some evil presence or are they just letting their imaginations run wild? Well, the viewer isn't 100% certain and although you see some scary looking stuff, you cannot be sure that it is or isn't real. Could it just be a form of mass hysteria? All you know for certain is that the film soon becomes a violent bloodbath, as the survivors start attacking each other and soon, perhaps, none of them will be left alive.

If you like scary films, Beneath creates a nice atmosphere. It's very scary and dark and plays on many of our worst fears. The director, Ben Ketai, does a good job of building the tension and keeping the tension going. As for the script, it is a bit derivative since it is so much like the Descent films. Additionally, I didn't really like the female character, as you're expected to believe that a person who has never been in the mines might be tougher and have greater survival skills than the men who have been working there for years. Simply, she seemed more like a plot device than a real person*. Plus, I find it hard to imagine that the coal mine would let a visitor go into the shafts to hang out with the workers. Still, if you like a film with thrills and scary stuff, it does have plenty of that. Familiar but I must admit it's still pretty horrifying.

*Please do NOT get angry because of this comment. My wife is an engineer and I have been a stay at home dad for many years. I love women and appreciate their hard work--but the character seemed underdeveloped and not exactly logical. Had she been a guy invited into the mines, I STILL would have thought this character would have been the first one to die simply because he was out of his element.

Good story, good execution.
Patient44417 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
So much better than expected, cause lets face it, we have a horror about a group of miners that get trapped under some rocks and when the terror stars no monsters are involved. It is about the horror of the situation, of how people react there, what they do, how they see things, therefore, this one feels quite natural.

Beneath is one of the best ones on this subject and even tho people compare it with The Descent or even The Cave, I personally think it has a lot more to do with Haute Tension. If you saw that one and you'll get to watch this one too, you'll make the connection trust me. Is it that predictable? Well, at least for half of movie you'll get a few scratches on your head but indeed eventually it kinda becomes obvious where this one is heading, but it won't ruin it for you. You'll still find yourself there, waiting to see more, how it ends, maybe even hoping for a more decent conclusion.

Anyway I gladly recommend this one, I had a lot of fun watching it and I am very excited that I got to put an eye on Beneath. Lovely execution, very good acting and a few good scares.

Cheers!

Absolutely worth my time
jamespurcell-178151 December 2022
I love when I skeptically click on these 5.4 rated movies on imdb (what it's at now), but what I get is a 6.3 calibre movie. There wasn't any point in this one where I was like "nah, that wouldn't happen" or "nah, I'm bored." This was just solid all the way through, with no boredom, no cringe moments, no scenes that drag out, just pure claustrophobic terror. I will say most of the jump scares were predictable horror tropes (girl turns around quickly and there's a face behind her, etc.), but they were still high quality for what they are. It's interesting, the fact that something this good only got a 5.4 has me wondering about other horror movies around that score. Maybe there's a lot more good ones then I thought.

Good scares, good atmosphere, good acting, good gore, basically good everything. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is that it's a very simple premise. It accomplishes what it set out to do, but what it set out to do is not very ambitious. This isn't high art, like Event Horizon or Annihilation. It reminded me of The Descent, although not quite as good due to less character development. In The Descent, I really cared for the characters. In this one, not so much.

If you want simple and effective claustrophobic horror, this is it.

Inspired by what event?
chris-j-steele2 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
At the beginning of the movie it says "In 2013, a collapse at Bracket Coal mine left a group of workers trapped nearly six hundred feet underground". A. There is no such mine and B. There was no collapse. and C. There has never been an event involving miners with monsters or "The Nineteen" 100-year-old ghosts! So I don't know how the Producers of this IFC movie got away with being able to use the words "Inspired on True Events" my rear! Normally in movies that are "Inspired on True Events" there is a prologue explaining what really happened. I have checked google and there is no mention of any mining event that resulted in only one survivor so this is not a movie that is "Inspired on True Events" and this privilege should be removed!

Most claustrophobic story since "The Descent"
moviefansme17 February 2014
The scariest aspect of "The Descent" (2005) wasn't the monsters (or even the backstabbing female-empowerment politics) but the narrow cave crevices the characters managed to squeeze through, the endless maze of tunnels they could so easily get lost in, the darkness that hid unseen dangers. "Beneath" has a lot of the same feel--the claustrophobia of the mine itself is as bad as whatever else is down there. And no, the crew isn't simply trapped underground, running out of oxygen and waiting to die. Worse yet, there's something else in there. What was in the unmapped cavern the miners accidentally breached, causing the cave-in in the first place? Many of the miners were buried by the cave-in--or were they? The survivors can wait for rescue, right? Or can they? It's not clear what the miners should be scared of, but it's clear they should be scared, and the audience along with them. As a haunted house movie, this mine is one hell of a haunted house. And whatever's going on in that house, it's not good!

Complete waste of time
hudsonda412 September 2014
This movie only got those three stars because of the supporting actors who were actually pretty good. The director went with shaky camera, flashing lights that last too long, in the darkness that lasts too long, and way too long of a build before anything happens.

I mean seriously, you put 6 full minutes of flashing lights and darkness into 80 minutes of movie? The main character sucks at acting. And there is nothing scary in this movie. Nothing. Note even a cheap thrill scare.

The other reviewers talked about the claustrophobia of the cave....... But that doesn't do anything for those of us who aren't claustrophobic.

Spoilers follow ...
parry_na23 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Attractive blonde Samantha Marsh (Kelly Noonan) joins a group of miners on a dig 600 feet below the surface on her father's (Jeff Fahey) final day as foreman for the group. Today is the day in which something goes spectacularly wrong. Wouldn't you just know it? And so, the group of hardened men and a capable but frightened woman are trapped as a mine collapses and air, putrid as it is, is starting to run out.

You have to be in the right mood to enjoy a film full of panicking people trapped in a punishing environment, as with anything really. What 'Beneath' does, it does very well, and you really do get a sense that the hugeness of their subterranean is made persuasively close and claustrophobic.

Among the 'god-damns' and the beautiful capped teeth is a real sense of there being something 'out there', because if the situation was not bad enough, there is also some (sadly unexplained) spiritual presence sharing the space with them, which makes its presence felt at the least welcome times.

This is a well-played, tense underground horror.

Abysmal!
rps-22 January 2015
If you think you would enjoy two hours of people shouting and swearing at each other in the dark, by all means see this movie. Silly, dreadful, unrealistic, absurd, pointless and confusing. I wasn't really sure what it was all about until after I looked it up on IMDb. Oh...it was a horror flick... No it wasn't, it was a disaster flick. In any case it was disastrously horrible. It begins with a bring your kid to work scenario except the kid is a sexpot adult woman and work is a coal mine. Something gives way or explodes or collapses --- thats never made clear --- and this unlikely group find themselves trapped underground. Rather than wait for promised rescue in 72 hours, they decide to explore. Booogie Boogie Boogie!!! At that point I wasn't sure who the bad guy was or why. Or was it possibly a bad gal? Or maybe a bad ghost? But it certainly was a bad movie!

Finally, a scary movie with some depth
briantumor102330 June 2014
I had to see this because mines, along with the ocean, are such a fascinating, fertile realm for scary movies -- the pretense of fear is already in the back of most people's mind. I really liked this movie. The cast had excellent chemistry and easily played off each others strengths, and most importantly to me, their characters didn't seem as contrived or cliché as most do nowadays. It felt so fresh considering all the crappy horror movies that rely on special effects, cheap scares and shaky cams. I was very impressed by everyone, but especially Lauren Gores. She's a very attractive, intelligent actress with a good sense of how to appear truly frightened. I was immediately drawn into the suspenseful buildup of the plot by her reactions as someone unfamiliar with the mining experience. They became convincingly intensified by the fears of the more seasoned crew as things began to go very wrong, and the fabric of their sense of the predictability of the situation began to tear at the seams. I don't think intelligent viewers need their interest piqued by the commercially invoked and debatable premise that there was some kind of supernatural force down there. It's scary enough to think about the real beasts of lust and violence that humans can become when under duress, whether it's fear of another race, religion or their own growing insanity due to unknown, invisible forces.

Entirely too dark to get a better rating.
jackmeat9 October 2015
My quick rating 4,9/10. The trapped in the coal mine flick is back. Being trapped with "something" is a common theme for horror/thriller movies to use so can't go anywhere really on originality. Ther are a few good things about this movie even though it is straight formula. The most important is the way the focus is back and forth between something being down there (demon, spirit, etc.) or just hallucinations due to lack of oxygen and the miners losing it mentally. Throughout he whole movie you will be wondering which it is (and no i am not saying). The other plus is the fact that the use of lighting is well done to only allow the lights the characters have illuminate the scene. That being said the movie spends a solid 10 minutes of an 80 minute film in complete darkness. Literally. This doesn't mix too well with often entirely to shaky footage when you can see. This major distraction is unbearable at some parts and takes away greatly from what could've been a good flick. Still worth seeing but I suggest on cable.

Fire down below!
SusieSalmonLikeTheFish23 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Growing up in Nova Scotia, I heard a lot of stories about the coal mines in Cape Breton although they'd been closed by then. Workers often died in gruesome ways or were buried alive. Coal mines are eerie enough on their own, but then you get horror films involved with them? Now that's scary! Take My Bloody Valentine (1981) for instance, it was filmed in a real coal mine. One of the miners went crazy and ate the other workers trapped with him.

Beneath takes it to an extreme. A group of coal miners are trapped when the mine collapses, and they're slowly running out of oxygen. Toxic gasses are seeping in, leaving the workers slowly going mad and wondering if they can save their air by killing the others.

This was pretty amazing for an independent film, I wish it wasn't so hard to find a copy though. The plot was pretty creepy, it reminded me of a news story a few years back with a collapsed mine; workers dug 'round-the-clock to rescue the miners trapped underground. The soundtrack was a little weird but still was decent, the acting was good and I don't think it was filmed in a real coal mine but it was still highly realistic. With pointless movies that aren't very good at all getting more popular just because they are made by large companies, it was nice to see a decent independent film with a good story.

Trapped in a coal mine, things are bad... in a good way.
sstetsko30 June 2014
We have seen the story before... trapped in a mine, a group of people struggle to survive. Yes, we have seen it and similar stories more than a few times before, but seldom so well. Solid acting quite effectively conveying fear, despair, and madness; a crescendo of well paced action, a VERY claustrophobic setting, a compelling twist of the unexplained, all blended together to make a real movie out of something that could have just ended up a clone of many others. I say this even admitting that I am not usually a big fan of movies with premises like this. I really liked descent (the comparison is, in some ways, inevitable), but didn't love it as much as some, and yet I put both these movies on par and rate them highly (for me a 7 is high... the mark of a movie well worth watching). If you are one of those people who loves this type of movie, I suspect you will rate it even more highly than I did.

If it could be faulted it is that the mystery madness (without giving too much away) is never thoroughly explained, and this contributes to a rather notable question mark at the end. It did not bother me... I find the mystery compels us to feel confusion in a way similar to the characters themselves, but for some viewers it will stick in their craw and they will cry foul because the director didn't spell it out for them. But this is a character and survival piece more than anything, so it can be forgiven if it defies leading us by the nose through a neatly sewn up narrative.

With that said, make what you will of it. Sit back with the big screen and good surround sound if you have it, and a significant other maybe, and enjoy.

Cool zombie faces
LiamBlackburn7 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
That is this film's best attribute; the makeup/fx people should be commended. It's really dark the whole way through but that's expected. The Director fails by missing a lot of small details. Like when the guy with the BROKEN FEMUR starts freaking out about the thing that's outside the oxygen cabin....he doesn't ever even grimace from the pain that a normal human would be in. How is that? Is it just poor direction? Poor acting? Or is it a result of the zombie infection....Of course much later on we find this same guy walking around because he turns into a zombie which means it was the infection that apparently made him immune to pain.......but still, how does that even explain anything, it never gets explained...or even touched on.... The movie doesn't go into any depth about why there are even zombies in the mine. Plus, when did the guy even get infected? I was fluctuating between rating this a 1 or a 6...I settled on a 3. This movie could've been good but there was just too many small details missing...and the movie fails to pull you in. It lacks believability. Sure., it's a zombie movie, but even in bad zombie movies they have some sort of explanation for the zombies....

Not a Zombie Movie, Just Someone Who Loses It Beneath
telljayvee12141 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE READING IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS MOVIE YET!!!

Okay, first things first, I don't know what movie everyone else saw but, what was up with the crazy girl? In the end, she's the ONLY CHARACTER in the movie that does any killing that we actually see. Yes, it does show a couple of the other characters "lose it" in some fashion but she's the only one we see consistently with a rock in the hand and some brain bashing as her conclusion to duress. Was it all in her head? I mean, what she sees in her own reflection in the end, wasn't what she really looked like. So, again, was it all in HER head?

I liked the movie okay. Not a bad movie at all. But in the end, the real killer seemed to be her and nobody else.

what in the osha violations is this?!?!?
amymay-6991615 September 2023
A. There was no explaination for the events. Full stop. A mid level, lame two sentence tale about a collapse 100 years ago,and no real story development of those events either. B. yeaaaahh....taking some non employee on a fun little tour of a mine *probably* is frowned upon by coporate, seeing as there is excessive, unnecessary liability involved. C. this movie was soooo DARK! And not dark as in genre, dark as in SHADE. LITERAL scenes of black--i thought my tv had turned off!!! Could barely make out the characters or the action...or lack thereof. Final scene was ridiculous-WHY?! Overall a decently acted movie (hence the two stars and not the one the plot warranted) with a terrible storyline and horrible cinematography.

Better Than Some Big Budget Movies Of A Similar Style
dfa12037420 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Beneath is the story of a group of miners who get into trouble after a cave-in traps them hundreds of feet underground. Help is expected within 72 hours, so the group hold out in a specially made chamber built for emergencies. However, what they didn't expect is to start hearing & seeing things, and as panic & paranoia start to set in, the miner's start to gradually turn on each other.

Beneath is a very under-rated little movie, and is much better than some people give it credit for. Whether they were expecting a Descent type of horror, or something more like the usual "more gore, less story" types we are used to, I don't know, but whatever it is, the movie is nowhere near as bad as they say it is.

Beneath is the kind of film that plays a lot on people's fears such as claustrophobia, being trapped, and the darkness rather than relying on visuals & gore all the time. You do see certain things and there is some gore, but this isn't the main reliant to scare the audience...the atmosphere is, and it is put to good use as it brings out quite a good few creepy moments throughout.

The tension & suspense is also really good, and this builds nicely as the film goes on. It's not one of those movies where you get a build up to nothing much then a long dull lull before another build up. The visuals for some of the creepy moments are really well done, especially for a low-budget movie. They aren't cheap, cheesy looking effects, and they do genuinely freak you out somewhat. Add this to the really good atmosphere I mentioned and you have yourself an enjoyable chiller of a movie.

Also just as a quick note, it says at the start of the movie that it's inspired by true events. This doesn't mean it's a true story. A true story and inspired by true events are totally different, so don't complain you can't find anything on the story and that you got a pile of "made up rubbish".

Well written, well acted, and well filmed. Definitely recommended.

Warning: Spoilers
And is in my POV a far cry from the Descent. I also did not find it claustrophobic...Yes, there are some scenes where tension starts to build up which lead to either a jump scare or even worse simply evaporate. Only the literarily final scene back in the daylight was a nice surprise.

Pretty good. Spoooky and Tense.
j_s_kelley8 November 2014
Never was a big fan of the underground/descent style movies. This one was pretty good. I think the creepiest movies are the ones that draw upon natural fears. Claustrophobia is one of mine and the thought of being underground when freaky stuff happens, and the possibility of running out of light and/or oxygen makes for a tense movie. To the people that poo-poo on the "inspired by actual events": That is way different than "Based on a true story". There have been plenty of cave-ins and plenty of miners dead and some where miners survive. So who knows which one "inspired" the writers of this film. Chill out and enjoy a good movie.

Let down by a weak script
continuumx11 March 2023
The movie start with a scene in a bar where the female lead says she is going to go down in the coal mine to show the guys that she can totally do what they can do. She does indeed go down into the mine because she wouldn't be part of the movie otherwise. A couple of guys working a digger break into some sort of tunnel. Almost immediately afterwards, there is a collapse and they are all trapped. It's unclear whether this is just a coincidence or whether the two events are related. Trapped and with the air going bad, they go to a rescue shelter to wait it until until help arrives. Of course, that's not how it plays out because that would make for a really boring movie. The two men who were working the digger are missing. Spooky stuff starts happening. Et cetera.

This movie does have some thing going for it. The female lead is not the best but the supporting cast is good. The underground environment is believable and suitably claustrophobic. The make-up effects are pretty good. What lets this movie down is the script. I get keeping the audience in the dark at first to build suspense but this movie keeps the audience in the dark for the whole movie. The female lead starts seeing things almost right away but doesn't bother to mention this tidbit to anyone. We never really find out why either. We never really find out why anything is happening or how much of this even is happening. There's a lame stinger ending that just made me roll my eyes. There are some good elements but they don't even come together in to anything.

Excellent, creepy horror thriller!
aawarren10 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Great horror thriller that keeps you guessing. The characters are likable and believable, and the horrific element is handled in an intelligently restrained way. There's a great element of mystery in the film's sequence of events, and you're never quite sure if things are what they seem.

The mining locations feel authentic, and the natural horror of being trapped underground adds to the scares. Special FX are handled well, but kept to a minimum, which is perfect for a film like this. The scares really come from the situation, the suspense, and the dynamics between the characters.

Creepy and delightfully claustrophobic
meowie_mum3 July 2018
I went into this movie expecting the same lame dribble that is most horror movies these days, but to my delight, I was pleasantly surprised. Beneath managed to pull of a genuinely creepy vibe throughout, and some fairly good scares as well. This movie has the ability to get under your skin, and if you are as claustrophobic as I am, you're in for a treat. My only real complaint was the rather standard attempt-one-last-shock ending that was ridiculously easy to see coming. Aside from that, Beneath is a solid horror flick.

Under Mine Accident !
saptesh7862 April 2019
Just saw this title. Thinking that it is a different experience about under mine atmosphere along with inspired by a true incident. Result is just okay, and not impressive. Due to filming in darkness most of part of the movie is difficult to understand well. Only torches coming for your help to display expression on the faces of each character. Acting side is just okay. However first part of going down the mine is helpful to understand the working method of miners. I do not recommend much. 5 stars are enough for it.

[5.4] Exactly the ratings that it deserves
cjonesas8 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A weak movie not its inception, but its flow, vibe and especially its storyline plots. Good acting, but no logic and cringey weak realism. What other users might see as realistic, dramatically satisfying and claustrophobic are not. What is happening down there is not real and realistic, rescue team 72 hours, seriously, shut down all the coal mines then! Too few oxygen bottles and variously advanced safety equipment, shut down the mines (people lives matter more). "Old" miners (past 45), not good; crazy emotionally weak women down there, a no go and a big no no.

'Beneath' needed a way more realistic script bringing strong logic as to what is happening down there, way faster rescue and if you wanted a woman 600 feet below, then add one or two more strong women for real cinematic dramatic purpose.

An old miner dad and his daughter down there together, if that happened for real (based on true events), I have nothing more to say!

A claustrophobic descent in madness
papyrusss-97-2399506 November 2016
Beneath starts off slow and steady but the ride is worth it. It's not your typical dumb for the masses movies. It creeps in on you, the slow pace will deter a few viewers same goes for the unfairly low ratings and review, but it will reward the ones that stick with it.

Reminiscent of other claustro-horror like "The Descent" or "The Cave", it manages to create it's own thing without just blatantly copying what others did before.

Some the the actors performances where disappointing but the story, script and good photography makes up for it. The carefully crafted mixture of light, shadows and darkness sets an incredible claustrophobic mood. The ambiance audio is also gteatly contributing to the eeriness vibe this movie warps you in.

The only other disappointing element of this movie is a redundant jump scare that is overused and isn't actually needed that much. Can't go in more details without spoilers but you will understand when you see it.
