After a disastrous 2023 for the DC brand, Warner Bros. hopes to deliver at least one hit comic book movie this year with Joker: Folie à Deux.
2019's Joker grossed over $1 billion on a modest $55 million budget. However, with reports swirling that the sequel cost upwards of $200 million, the studio will surely be hoping it hasn't allowed filmmaker Todd Phillips to indulge too much with this follow-up. After all, musicals are a tough sell at the best of times and comic book adaptations have struggled greatly post-covid.
We'll see what happens, but when the first teaser trailer dropped last month, one of the biggest surprises was an appearance from British actor and filmmaker Steve Coogan.
Best known in the UK for portraying comedy icon Alan Partridge, his film and television credits include Hot Fuzz, Tropic Thunder, Minions, the Night at the Museum franchise, Happyish, and The Reckoning.

Exclusive: Emmy winner Carrie Preston (The Good Fight) has signed on to star alongside Paul Giamatti and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in the Miramax film The Holdovers, from two-time Oscar winner and seven-time nominee Alexander Payne.
The dramedy written by Whiskey Cavalier creator David Hemingson follows Paul Hunham (Giamatti), a teacher at a prestigious academy who nobody likes—not his students, not his fellow faculty, not the headmaster, who all find his pomposity and rigidity exasperating. With no family and nowhere to go over Christmas holiday in 1970, Paul remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. After a few days, only one student holdover remains—a trouble-making 15-year-old named Angus, a good student whose bad behavior always threatens to get him expelled.
Joining Paul and Angus is the school’s head cook Mary (Randolph), who caters to sons of privilege and whose own son was recently lost in Vietnam.

Is there any actor quite like him? Comparisons had been made in the past. The actor Toby Jones was contrasted to Hoffman when the actors starred in competing Truman Capote biopics; some critics considered Jones’ performance to be superior to Hoffman’s from a technical standpoint, but Hoffman’s wounded and erudite interpretation of the famous author drew far more acclaim, garnering Hoffman his only Academy Award. While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. There’s a long history of TV shows changing drastically in the transition from pilot to full season. Directors change, scripts are revised, actors are replaced. But while most of these pilots never become public, there is one you can watch right now, and it features one of the last performances by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was supposed to star in the Showtime series “Happyish.”

As the decade recently came to a close and many reflected on those we lost, one of the deepest pains is that Philip Seymour Hoffman is longer with us. One can only imagine the performances the immensely talented actor would have delivered, but today brings one that had never seen the light of day–until now. Shortly before his death in February 2014, he had filmed the pilot for the Showtime series Happyish, which follows a depressed advertising executive. Created and written by Shalom Auslander, it was later relaunched with Steve Coogan recast in the role. Back in 2013, John Cameron Mitchell directed the pilot which ended up never being publicly seen, but he’s now made it available.
The director said on Instagram, “I directed the original unaired 2013 pilot of #Happyish, a Showtime comedy starring the brilliant #philipseymourhoffman in his last filmed role. (He is fraternizing w a double-stuffed Keebler elf...

Hundreds of WGA members rallied solidly behind their union last week as the industry grappled with uncertainties spurred by the sudden break between writers and their talent agency representatives.
But as the standoff heads into its second week, signs of strain among some WGA members are beginning to emerge. Shalom Auslander, author and creator of the Showtime dramedy “Happyish,” penned a scathing “Official Coerced Termination Letter” to his reps at CAA that blasted the WGA for what Auslander describes as thuggish tactics in forcing members to fire their agents.
The letter, which is circulating in writer circles, likened Auslander’s situation to being held “hostage” by the WGA and threatened with disciplinary action if he did not send in the electronic form letter of termination provided by the guild. The WGA reportedly plans to deliver hard copies of the termination letters to the Big Four talent agencies — Wme, CAA, UTA and ICM Partners — on Monday.

“I’ve always been interested in things that happen more in a rural setting,” admits cinematographer Ben Kutchins. “Most of the movies that I’ve shot to this point take place in an urban setting,” so when he was offered “Ozark,” he jumped at it. “I was raised in the country, so this was an opportunity to explore the darkness of my childhood as it were.” This year Kutchins received his career-first Emmy nomination for the series. Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Postpartum,” the 12th episode of the second season of “The Handmaid’s Tale”
When Bradley Whitford tries to put his experience with “The Handmaid’s Tale” into words, the first thing that comes to mind is that it is a “brutal show” and “overwhelming to watch.”
He’s not the first to say so.
But he also says it has been a “profoundly creative experience,” all-around, including costume fittings, shooting his scenes, and looping dialogue after production.
“It is obviously one of the most emotionally brutal shows that has ever been made, and it is truly the sweetest, kindest set you’ve ever been on, which I think enhances the work. But it is quite a contrast once they say action,” Whitford says.

Kathryn Hahn is Chris, a struggling indie filmmaker who finds herself at an artists' retreat in Marfa, Texas, where she falls under the spell of local artist Dick, played by Kevin Bacon. The biggest problems facing new sitcoms today are getting the writing to fit exactly with the actors who have to deliver the scripts, and getting through the establishment. Crowded, NBC‘s latest effort, gets through both of them in a way that is almost unprecedented. Top that off with great writing, and this is one of the best sitcoms in years.
Created by Suzanne Martin, of Hot in Cleveland and The Soul Man, Crowded is an effort that showcases avoiding the need for the convoluted establishment that drags a lot of attempts down, by simply being about the world we know. Instead of struggling to get you to play along with some gimmick, it only has to give you the characters, which leaves a lot more time to get to the comedy.

With so much unique television being created by innumerable television networks, it’s only natural that certain shows won’t last long. These days, we’re in something of a Golden Age of television writing, with amazing shows airing or just having aired, like Breaking Bad, Mad Men and the first season of True Detective.
But those shows are the cream of the crop. 2015 was filled with disappointing television debuts like Steve Coogan’s Happyish, Craig Robinson’s Mr Robinson and ABC’s Office-esque The Muppets. With a little bit of analysis and foresight, however, the negative reaction to these shows probably could have been predicted, and the same goes for 2016.
Like every year, 2016 is set to give viewers a whole host of new televisual choices. While some of these things will likely be brilliant (there’s been a very positive reaction to the first episode of 2016’s The X-Files...

It’s not often that a premium cable network cancels a series after just one season, but such is the fate of Happyish. Showtime has confirmed the death of its first-year comedy, which opened in April to mostly negative reviews. Created by playwright Shalom Auslander, Happyish was originally intended as a starring vehicle for the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, with Showtime chief David Nevins excitedly revealing the project to TV critics back in 2013. After Hoffman died and Steve Coogan signed on to fill the Hoffman role on the show, Nevins decided to keep the project going. But the combination of harsh critical reaction (the Denver Post’s Joanne Ostrow called the pilot “a sad, pretentious piece of work, desperate to be taken seriously”) and low ratings (just 300,000 viewers watched episode one within the first three days of its premiere, while, on average, a modest 1.6 million caught most episodes on...

Before Shalom Auslander created the Showtime series "Happyish" — a "comedy" about a marketing executive struggling to overcome his moral qualms with the profession and find meaning in his day-to-day existence — he was a marketing executive dwelling on similar issues. This year, he's found a way to focus those thoughts into his first television series, an extension(-ish) of his past work as a writer of three novels, many articles and contributions to the popular NPR program "This American Life." Now Auslander is waiting to hear if he'll get to continue his latest story. Showtime has yet to pick up a second season of "Happyish," which should come as no surprise to critics and fans alike. Season 1 was an ambitious, genre-defying effort meant to get its message across more than cater to the predefined whims of a pay cable audience.
