Related: The First Take Soars With Shoko Nakagawa Performing ‘Sorairo Days’ The “ Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann vs. Kill la Kill Exhibition ” will be happening this summer, though details on where, when or how have yet to be confirmed. There’s nothing quite like jazz. Hitting the right notes in the tiny area between experimentation, chaos, art and cacophonous noise is a tricky thing to do, and the artists that can are held in a regard few other professions can touch. There’s an allure to it, a danger in live performances where one false note could send an entire act into disarray. It may be the most pure form of music, depending not on set patterns and structure, but instinct and intuition in every moment. Curious then, that Shinichi Ishizuka’s “Blue Giant” manga series was miraculously able to catch the hearts and minds of many with words and images about jazz rather than including the music itself. As a medium, manga is restricted to the expression of the illustration and the truthfulness of the story, but one thing it inherently cannot have is sound to go with it.

Television is going full fan boy for video game adaptations.
Earlier this month, Amazon greenlit a new series based on award-winning PlayStation game God of War, with Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby on board.
HBO’s The Last of Us, a hotly-anticipated small-screen version of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog and Sony, created by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s original directors, drops Jan. 15.
They join a long list of game-to-series adaptations, from Halo (Paramount+) to Twisted Metal (Peacock) and Horizon (Netflix). Alongside God of War, Amazon is also moving forward with its TV version of post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout, being adapted by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.
All of the adaptations hope to capitalize on the games’ devoted base of hard core fans. But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the hit anime series...

Implementing the great drawing and animation style of Studio Trigger, which has resulted in titles like “Kill La Kill, “Promare” and “Bna”, featuring an opening by Franz Ferdinand, and based on a story by Polish writers Bartosz Sztybor, Jan Bartkowicz and Łukasz Ludkowski, that has, thankfully, left all notions of political correctness out of the title, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is definitely one of the best anime titles of the year.
The story takes place in Night City, a self-reliant metropolis located in the Free State of California that suffers from extensive corporate corruption, cybernetic addiction, and gang violence. The city is split into six districts, each of which has its own precise living requirements, and is controlled by a number of different megacorporations, including Arasaka and its rival Militech. In Santo Domingo, the oldest, poorest, and most industrial district of Night City is where we meet the main protagonist, an impulsive...

"Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" is an animated spin-off of "Cyberpunk 2077," a blockbuster sci-fi dystopian video game that itself was made in a pretty dystopian manner. It's also the newest show by Hiroyuki Imaishi, the director of "Gurren Lagann" and "Promare."
Imaishi started as an animator and director at the legendary studio Gainax before co-founding Studio Trigger with fellow Gainax staff including Yoh Yoshinari. His work features bombastic action, rude humor, and enough lens flares to give J.J. Abrams a headache. Imaishi's work is popular among international fans, some of whom were inspired to become animators themselves. Others argue that Imaishi's descendants, such as Yoshimichi Kameda and Imaishi's protege Akira Amemiya, have long surpassed him as animator and director respectively. Even so, "Edgerunners" holds its own in what is set to be a very busy fall for the anime industry.
Imaishi crams his animated works with references to shows, movies and comics he likes.

Let’s get this out of the way: Star Wars: Visions is wonderful, a pleasure to watch from start to finish, even if it does tend to lean on the same subject matter from one anime short film to the next. But Visions‘ over-reliance on Jedi stories is more than fair. After all, George Lucas heavily borrowed from real samurai history and traditions for his laser sword-brandishing space wizards. It’s only right that the seven Japanese animation studios assembled to bring Visions to life should get a chance to reinterpret Jedi lore now.
I won’t be going into heavy spoilers in this review, as you should really go into each of these stories fresh. Plus, since most of the shorts are less than 20 minutes long, revealing even the smallest twists can give whole episodes away. But what I will say is that each short does an excellent job...

Japanese creators have the uncanny ability of making nonsensical and preposterous themes and notions seem coherent, and in the process creating very entertaining titles. This tendency becomes quite evident in some of the anime series of the latest years, as the “Monogatari” series, “Kill La Kill” and “Assassination Classroom.” “One Punch Man” is also a distinct example of the tendency.
The anime is based on the homonymous, ongoing web comic by One, which begun publication in 2009. In 2012, Viz Media remade it into an extremely successful manga that sold over 4,5 million copies by 2014, and in 2015, Madhouse produced the anime series, which consists of 12 episodes.
The script revolves around Saitama, a human so strong that can vanquish any kind of enemy comes his way with just a single punch. And living in City Z, where monsters appear frequently to cause disasters, he has plenty of chances to do so.

The duo of director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, along with Studio Trigger seem to produce only masterpieces, since their three works include “Gurren Lagann“, “Promare” and the present title.
The story takes place in Honnouji Academy, a high school in Tokyo Bay, where Satsuki Kiryuin is the head of a rather powerful council governing over hundreds of students. Just below her are the “Four Devas”, a quartet of also quite strong students, who are dedicated to her, despite having their own agendas, on occasion. What is the unique thing about Honnouji, however, is that the students are wearing Goku Uniforms, special suits created from a material known as Life Fibers, which are bestowed to them based on their skills and accomplishments. Furthermore, the better suit a student wears, the better situated in the area is his/her family, in a society that is rather segregated.

It’s been nearly a year since the last info dump for the highly-anticipated “Cyberpunk 2077” video game. Studio Trigger is working on a Cyberpunk 2077-based anime series called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners which is set to debut on Netflix in 2022.
“[Cyberpunk: Edgerunners] tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future,” reads a description of the series. “Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”
The anime will take place in Cyberpunk 2077‘s universe, but it will not be a retelling of the upcoming game. Instead, it sounds like Studio Trigger’s goal is for the show to focus on new stories and characters within Night City.

Yesterday, Netflix added the first hundred and thirty episode of the anime One Piece to its library, and fans couldn’t be happier. One of the most popular media franchises in the entire world, the show is hard to come by if you live in America or Europe. The first of the three masterful collaborations the duo of Hiroyuki Imaishi as director and veteran playwright Kazuki Nakashima as script-writer gave us (“Kill la Kill” and “Promare” are the other two) was a truly game-changing title, which reinvigorated the rather preterit at the time mecha genre in ways no one could have imagined.
The main story, which is not based on a manga in another unique aspect of the title, takes place in a fictional future where Earth has become an almost complete dystopia, ruled by the Spiral King, Lord Genome, who has forced mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages for generations. To achieve that, apart from spreading lies about the surface of the earth being extremely dangerous, he also uses his beast men, who, using mechas, terrorize anyone who dares actually leave the underground villages. The delicate dance between fire and ice spins out of control in highly-anticipated animated film “Promare” (2019). Director Imaishi Hiroyuki and well-beloved animation Studio Trigger (“Little Witch Academia”) have blessed the film with their characteristic low-frame, extravagant poses, sharply defined character designs, and of course — its self-indulgent giant mecha machines. While the film is sure to please loyal fans, “Promare” fails – at the same time – in truly creating something new, and instead falls back on a hackneyed script sadly telling of the film’s low budget.
“Promare” is distributed by Gkids in the United States, and Anime Limited in the UK. “Promare” opens in UK cinemas on 26th November (dubbed) with subbed screenings from 29th November

From the moment Studio Trigger first unleashed “Kill la Kill” on the world, we’ve been enthralled by their unique mix of intense, flamboyant action and well-developed characters that have made it and the likes of “Ssss.Gridman” such celebrated fan favourites. Anyone already familiar with their work may have had an idea of the undiluted joy that awaits them, yet Studio Trigger’s first feature film exceeds expectations as a culmination of Imaishi’s work that needs to be experienced sprawling across the big screen.
Burning bright at the core of “Promare” are its two central characters, the self-proclaimed moron Galo, and the terrorist leader Lio. Fuelled by passion and a tendency to act without thinking, Galo’s mix of charm and macho charisma makes him the perfect pilot for this adrenaline rush of a film, and a compelling contrast to Lio’s cool, androgynous persona. When their fates...

Anime maniacs have been waiting for this day: Eight years ago, Hiroyuki Imaishi co-founded Studio Trigger with the goal of one day hatching a feature as wild and innovative as his TV series “Gurren Lagann” and “Kill la Kill.” Now he has. Every bit as loud and ambitious as one might expect from a visual artist with such a hyperactive imagination, .
With “Promare,” which has already earned $10 million in its native Japan, the payoff is the seamless mix of 2D elements in 3D environments with a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack that seeps in at the right times. Best seen with a rowdy audience — like those who came out for dubbed and subtitled versions shown via nationwide Fathom Events screenings on Sept. 17 and 19 — this cult-ready Gkids release will get a more traditional rollout in larger U.S. markets starting Sept. 20.

Hiroyuki Imaishi is–in the very best way–one of animation’s finest ambassadors of Adhd. His 2004 directorial debut, Dead Leaves, is a masterpiece of sci-fi action insanity: 50 minutes of delirious stylized motion, featuring ultra-angular “superflat” designs combining the most expressive deformities of Eastern and Western comics and cartoons; a psychedelic adrenaline rush that diffuses the full density of a pulpy jailbreak action flick into half the running time and several times the visual scope. It is the pure cinematic embodiment of a film viewer, and filmmaker, whose bountiful imagination strikes dynamite creative synthesis with a short-fuse attention span. Dead Leaves was a minor event at the time, consigned to direct-to-dvd release overseas and ultimately, perhaps, too aggressively weird and explicit to capture the fancy of either mainstream critics or otaku. But 15 years later, Imaishi–who found breakout success in TV anime and co-founded his own studio, Trigger–has become...

All cinema is wonderful, but there’s a certain wonder that’s only possible through animation. We have almost grown numb to how realistic computer-graphic animation has advanced, but there are few things akin to the experience of being transported to a dreamworld that lets its colors wash over and swallow you whole. Similarly, anime has reached some staggering heights of what’s possible through traditional animation, and in many ways Promare sets a new standard in that area, delivering visuals that will be discussed for years and strive to be matched and surpassed. It’s a gorgeous, fun fever dream of a movie that captures the exact spirit of what makes anime so magical and powerful.

"Someone has to shoulder the fate of mankind." GKids has unveiled the full-length official Us trailer for the Japanese anime feature film Promare, from animation filmmaker Hiroyuki Imaishi. We featured the first teasers previously, but give this full trailer a look. This is the first feature-length film made by the acclaimed studio known as Trigger. "Promare uses a bold cel-shaded visual style to tell a blistering action-adventure story, and is the spiritual successor to many of director Imaishi’s former works." The story follows Galo and the Burning Rescue Fire Department who battle against "Mad Burnish", a group of mutants who are able to control and wield flames, and the fire disaster they have unleashed on Earth. The main Japanese voice cast features Arata Furuta, Tetsu Inada, Hiroyuki Yoshino, Masato Sakai, Taichi Saotome, and Kenichi Matsuyama. Glad to see this will be playing in theaters in the Us. Injecting an intoxicating shot of frantic energy and sleek color directly into your pupils, the postapocalyptic sci-fi action saga “Promare” plays like an anime-induced euphoric trip.
Marking the first feature release for both Japanese outfit Studio Trigger and its co-founder and director Hiroyuki Imaishi, this visual potion spiced with fiery duels and supernatural machinery is at its most potent when taken without much concern for its bewildering mechanics.
Imaishi is best known for fan-favorite shows “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann,” works that feature campy erotic innuendos mostly missing from “Promare.” And he carries over the vividly graphic style of animation and fast-paced editing from those episodic hits into his theatrical debut, based on a screenplay by longtime collaborator Kazuki Nakashima (“Batman Ninja”).

The new voices joining up for the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon have finally been revealed.
Sailor Stars, the fifth and final season of Sailor Moon, is kind of a big deal. The only season of the show never before dubbed into English due to its radical assertion that genderfluid people, you know, exist, it’s long been a subject of controversy amongst pearl-clutching moral guardians. Literally no one else cared. Pretty much everyone else loves the Sailor Starlights, this season’s rival/pseudo-antagonist faction to the Sailor Guardians, just as Tuxedo Mask and the Outers were in their introductory seasons.
And what’s not to love? A boy band that transforms into a trio of young women dressed up like cosmic, superpowered dominatrixes… dominatrices?... okay, maybe if I squint I can kind of see how some people might feel a little weird about...

Studio Trigger’s 2013 frenetic 2013 anime series “Kill la Kill” is getting a video game adaptation in the form of Arc System Works‘ “Kill la Kill the Game: If.” Announced during Anime Expo 2018, the colorful arena fighter is making its way to PlayStation 4 and PC in 2019.
The game takes several cues from the “Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm” series, at least what’s featured in the initial footage depicting a brawl between protagonist Ryuko Matoi and nemesis Satsuki Kiryuin. The two take part in a flashy one-on-one duel that finds both characters utilizing special attacks and finishers. Visually, it has a lot in common with Arc System Works’ other recent anime-inspired game, “Dragon Ball FighterZ,” though combat looks to be much more open-ended here.

While the geek world continues to argue amongst themselves about Justice League, DC quietly just dropped a trailer for what looks to be their most exciting animated feature to date. Batman Ninja, which is a rare anime-style feature from the company, shows Bruce Wayne thrust from modern times into Medieval Japan where some friends are already waiting for him. I'm not exactly sure why Batman is the last to arrive (especially considering every past Robin and Red Hood is there), but I was all in the moment when I saw Edo Joker in action!
The film was developed by screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and the English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supa Ninjas).
Check out the first trailer, complete with subtitles, and tell me this isn't something you're interested in seeing in 2018.

Last week we learned that there was a Batman anime film in development called Batman Ninja. The film is being developed by screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and the English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supa Ninjas). They all appeared at a panel at Nycc this past weekend to talk about the movie.
They explained that Batman Ninja will feature several heroes and villains that will be traveling through time to battle. The story will be set in Japan and it will range from the middle ages to the modern day. Cbm explains:
The creators have all discussed how they wanted to have a balance of eastern and western sensibilities and that by having Batman serve as the western, the eastern would flow naturally into his surroundings. They strived to keep the personalities of each...

The film: Horrific murders start taking place with mutilated bodies found across the small community of Tarker’s Mills, causing widespread panic. Sheriff Joe Haller (Terry O’Quinn) is out of his depth and, with Reverend Lester Lowe (Everett McGill), trying to stop the townsfolk forming a militia to go after whoever is doing the killings. In the middle of it all is wheelchair-bound Marty (Corey Haim) who starts to suspect there might be a real monster, perhaps a werewolf, who is committing the killings. Anime may have developed a loyal and feverish following outside of Japan since the dawn of high-speed internet but in reality, fans will likely always have to contend with looks of bemused, quiet judgement when their grandparents ask why they’re watching “those funny Asian cartoons again”.
Now and then however, a series will come along with crossover, mainstream appeal that seeps into western pop culture and introduces a new generation of viewers to the world of anime and manga. Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon and Pokémon all found homes on international T.V. Channels, and even casual television watchers are likely familiar with at least one of those franchises, if only because of the “it’s over 9000!” meme. Likewise, it’s no coincidence that Hollywood is currently in...

Plenty of words have been written and said about the ongoing disgruntlement with Scarlett Johansson being in the live-action Ghost in the Shell film. So when a Facebook friend of mine posed the fun question of who we'd cast in a live-action Kill La Kill, my first reaction was "Not Scarlett Johansson!"... Still, the question turned out to be a fun one, which is no surprise as Kill La Kill is actually a fun series with fun characters. So, courtesy of friend-of-the-site Lee B. Golden, I was allowed to borrow (cough-steal-cough) his idea and pose it to you all. For what would we want or expect from actors and actresses in a live-action Kill La Kill? Given the choice, would we give the (scissor's) edge...

Two productions being introduced to buyers at Hong Kong Filmart.
Japan’s Village Inc. is launching sales on samurais-battling-demons story Asura and avenging samurai love story Midare Uguisu at Filmart.
The films are part of Geki Cine’s portfolio which, motivated by fans who complained their star-powered stage plays’ runs were too limited, started shooting the productions two times each with 20 HD cameras, and then doing post-production including sound mixing and special effects at Warner Brothers.
Hiroyuki Hata, director of International Operations at Village Inc. said: “The productions have much more work in them than your average independent film. For instance, top notch sound mixing by BAFTA winner Mike Prestwood Smith, who has worked on films such as Casino Royale and Mission: Impossible
Directed by Hidenori Inoue and written by Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), Asura stars Somegoro Ichikawa (Semishigure), Yuki Amami (Amalfi), Tsuyoshi Ihara (Thirteen Assassins).
Midare Uguisu as a film is in pre-production with Izumi Inamori...

1. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Suzumiya Haruhi, is an intelligent high school girl with a mischievous personality, and very egocentric disposition, and upon enrolment at school she announces:
“I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, beings from the future, or super-humans, come see me. That is all!”
Naturally, this did raise a few eyebrows, but Haruhi is dead serious. Things get awkward when everyone realises just how serious she is about it all and establishes the Sos Brigade. What makes her quite ominous though is her unimaginable power to actually change the world, but she is totally unaware of her own power and so she is also unaware of the affect of her power on the outside world. The cynical Kyon, a friend at the Sos Brigade, is among the few who knows of Haruhi’s power, and is desperately trying to keep the world together.
