Call Me Kelly's ratings came in ahead of even The Mary Tyler Moore Show in South Africa in 1977. Lead actor John Parsonson soon became one of South Africa's first TV stars.
John Parsonson accidentally flipped the Chevrolet Nomad, whilst stunt driving during the filming of the series.
Call Me Kelly was a landmark series, as it was the first English series to be commisioned by the SABC to an outside production company, Heyns Films in 1977. (TV was only introduced in South Africa in 1976.)
SABC English programming took a leap forward in quality with this series. Afrikaans programming at the time had always been of good quality, as it received a far greater budget and attention.
