A nail biter of an episode!
itisiabanana22 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
They jumped immediately into the drama in this episode and never let up!

The pacing and filming in this episode was top notch. Very engrossing. I just can't get over the increase in quality compared to the show's last two seasons on Fox. Thank goodness Kristen Reidel is gone, and the restrictive network.

The characters all have their charm back. Little idiosyncrasies and ways of speaking that just feel so much more real and in character. The missing spark as returned!

As far as the individual storylines, it was of course, time for Bathena to shine and they definitely did. Angela Bassett and Peter Krause really got to flex their acting muscles and they didn't disappoint. Their emotion and honesty was touching and I really hope we continue to explore them more, especially Bobby.

The rest of the 118 had an interesting storyline as well, though I wish it hadn't been wrapped up so quickly! I didn't think that Chim, Buck, and Eddie betrayed Hen in the slightest, but I can also understand her feelings. I do hope she apologizes though because her reaction wasn't really called for (professionally or personally). I'm glad she had Karen to help ground her.

It was also great to see Hen interact with Maddie again, and I hope they keep integrating Maddie more with the other characters!

Hooray for no Marisol this week. Fingers crossed we're as lucky next week.

All in all, impressive! I'm definitely looking forward to the resolution next week and I hope the remainder of the season is equally enjoyable.

Warning: Spoilers
When chimney becomes upset with Hen over her decision to not FORCE treatment on a drunk appearing person because said drunk refused care, Chimney is not being realistic. Caring for a person again his wishes constitutes assault, false imprisonment or kidnapping. Medics face situations like this frequently. No means no. Hen would have had a better chance of diagnosing the brain bleed had the guy had consented to the exam. People don't realize how uncooperative and combative drunks and head injuries can be and unless they give permission to be examined and treated, medics or nurses run the risk of losing their licenses or being sued.

On the edge of my seat
elysiumnotes12 April 2024
WOW!!! What an episode!! The only true word that comes to mind is STRESS. I was on the edge my seat from the beginning as Norman got shot, as the ship blew up, as Bathena save the day and say their unplanned goodbyes, up until the very last moment when the ship is overturned. This 3 part premiere is off with a bang and doesn't show signs of stopping. I love it! Also Capitan Hen being incredibly competent and a cute little Henren moment.

ABC really took this show and cranked it up to an 11, it's really bringing back that feeling that made want to watch 911 in the first place. Can't wait for next week's episode and the conclusion to the premiere.

Incredible!

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was so good! Everything!

I felt for Hen when she thought the guys had betrayed her. I also felt for them too because they were kind of caught in the middle of something they all knew was nonsense but they had to tell them what they knew regardless. I love how Karen tried to be the voice of reason too.

Everything on the cruise ship was great! I can't believe the pirates shot Norman! And Lola? How dare she-after how Norman "saw her" and changed for her! Wow!

I was on the verge of crying with Athena and Bobby's potential goodbye speeches. Especially Bobby's-my heart broke. I don't think it could take either of them dying or losing each other.

The ending when the ship capsized, I was on the edge of my seat because it's exactly as Athena feared! Omg!

I can't wait for next week's episode. Its gonna be a traumatic one for our fire fam, but I'm here for it!

My heart will go on

Warning: Spoilers
The fact that this show has Peter Krause and Angela and almost never uses their talent is extremely uncomfortable, look what we lost last season with that pathetic Buck story, well, I don't even want to remember it. The cast of the show is the best out there, poor Hen, I had a pain in my chest for her, she didn't do anything wrong, she did everything right. I was left breathless at the scene of them drowning, looking forward to next week to find out how they will get them out of there and how Buck and Eddie will deal with their individual traumas, because Eddie was in a helicopter and he has trauma and Buck will be in the sea that just had a big wave. Two epic episodes. It could always be like this, without having to add boring characters. But next time we'll have boring Tommy but wait and see.

Weird writing
morkoff22 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It is like two episodes of two diferent shows mingled together with no connection whatsoever. What was the point of Hen's story? Just there to go nowhere, the switching from the ship to LA was weirdly paced. What if the episode started with Hen being worried about the missing cruise and from there she makes questionable judgement call? It easily goes both ways - was she concentrated enough to make the best decision and despite being worried she is still professional enough. You have an organic build to a conflict and you actually have connection with all parts of the episode. Now it was just the 100th times she'd say how she is judged differently. Where is Hen from first season? She was a great strong character whose actions spoke for her. Slowly they made it as if she thinks can never make a mistake.

The writing on the cruise part of the story was also so-so. The emotional scene between Bobby and Athena is great because of what they say and how they act, but when put into the context of not-a-real-danger danger, it feels cheap.

I will watch it next week, but this season seems off to me. The long close ups to the faces of the actors, the score, the overall feel... it is just weird.

Your crew has to be the best!!
JMadems26 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Amazing. The real stars this week were Angela & Peter with DO Joaquin Sedillo leading the way. This entire crew has to be stars to get all this accomplished after the strikes and late starts. Writing is soooo much better. Love the quick ins & outs of scenes between the ship and land scenes. Snap and you're in a new location and there's no chance for any inattention or you've just missed something major. Otherwise you will wear out your rewind feature.

Thank you Tim- no Maridull this week. Could you make it permanent please!!! Also no KR could have been involved with this - it's just too good. Please don't desert the OG again!!

Really enjoyed Hen's & Maddie's scenes- something new & most enjoyable.

For the people yammering about "this isn't real & not how a FD works" - a reminder - this is fiction! You want a documentary change the channel! You guys must be a lot of fun at a party - NOT!

So far the worst part about this season is that it's only 10 episodes. And the presence of Maridull. Bummer to both.

Back into the swing of things!
CeeCeeLove2131 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It has, unfortunately, been a hot minute since this show was able to keep me on the edge of my seat, but Tim coming back has breathed new life into a show that was floundering in its writing and pacing.

First of all, we have to talk about Peter and Angela being (rightfully) given the spot light and absolutely carrying this disaster arc. In just two episodes I feel like we got more Bathena moments, conversations, and insights into their relationship than we have in the past two seasons combined. In fact, this season so far feels very much like it's picking up where in left off in season 4. I saw some people being confused about Bathena having issues and that it felt "out of character" but to me it just felt like that fight they set aside when Eddie and then Bobby got shot finally had a chance to get picked back up again and resolved. The beauty of Athena confronting her fear and seeing that she did have so much more she wanted to talk about with Bobby was contrasted so sharply with Bobby confronting that he was still feeling unworthy and hasn't fully dealt with that yet. It made the scene feel so heartbreaking and real. Just two flawed people reminding each other how much they love one another. This kind of depth from the show has been sorely missed.

It was also great seeing Bobby and Athena investigating together, Bobby getting to be in the center of the action when we usually see him directing everyone else, and Athena being the commanding presence we all know she is. On top of all the drama, there was also the perfect balance of funny/snarky moments to cut the tension a little. That is another thing the show used to be really good at that fell somewhat flat over the past few seasons, but seems to have returned along with Tim. The jokes and snark give the audience a little break, without ever making the emergency or people involved seem trivial, and it's really good to have that balance back on the show. Even the editing choices gave us some humor with things like Bobby saying he needed his team, and cutting to the 118 at work, or someone pointing out Bobby and Athena were off relaxing only to cut to them actively trying to evacuate people from a sinking ship. Just delightful.

Speaking of the 118, what a great B plot for the episode! We get to see Captain Hen again, while also showcasing how no one on the show is perfect, and our main characters are still complex, real-feeling people. We got a few laughs with Hen vs The Boys, while also showcasing to a new audience the dynamics of the team even though they're still currently spread out and not the full 118 crew at the moment. We also got a great Hen and Karen scene and finally some good Hen/Maddie content! It's great seeing Maddie back in the middle of things, and we got some funny moments there too, along with the drama and tension. Something the show always used to do incredibly well and seems to be bringing back, is manage arcs for multiple characters at once. The last few seasons it felt like a character might get one big episode "for them" and then not do much of anything for several episodes. However, in the early seasons with better pacing, as one arc would be reaching its peak, another one would be starting, and sometimes a third would be closing meaning the mains were all having things going on at once and no one felt sidelined or overshadowed. We've got this big Athena and Bobby story, and this episode had this plot with Hen starting, and last week we got Chim/Maddie and Buck/Eddie/Chris stuff. The pacing is starting to feel more like it used to, which is a relief after the past couple of years. I hope it continues!

Overall, this was an incredibly strong episode that didn't cut where I thought it would (Bobby and Athena stuck in the bilge pump room) which left me extra on the edge of my seat the whole rest of the episode after that waiting to see where it was actually going to end. That moment did NOT disappoint! I know the disaster episodes are not the metric to judge the whole season on as they tend to be An Event of their own, but just these two episode have felt so much more like home than 99.9% of seasons 5 and 6. People saying the show has "changed" with the network need to go back and watch the first couple of seasons because this is the most "9-1-1" the show has felt in a long time. I'm excited to see what comes next, and to see more of the firefam acting like their old selves again, with good emergencies, and the heart and soul of the show back in the right place- centered on the people of the 118 and their connections. Also, a shout out to the ABC promo team for actually doing their jobs and promoting the show. This great cast deserves it and between the promo and Tim returning to run the show, things are looking up!

Getting dumber
boris_badanov23 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
1. Hen was never a firefighter. She joined the fire department late in life to be a paramedic. Without fireman training or passing the test for officer and leadership training, She would never be left in charge of a busy firehouse. She would have no training how to handle a fire situation.

2. Paramedics in the field do not call the hospital and tell the hospital what specials they have standing by. As a medic your job is to stabilize treat and transport. That's what they have the specialist for at the hospital to determine the next steps.

3. Who takes flex cuffs on vacation? Seriously?

4. Let me get this right, a cruise ship is missing but the Coast Guard is too busy to go looking?

Hmmm

I've seen the trailer, The fire department in LA gets on a helicopter and flies to Mexico to look. Yeah that's really going to happen... Oy very!

5. Cruise ship doctors have training to handle most emergencies. For this doctor to panic at a gunshot wound, and claim he's just a general practitioner? He went to medical school, He has first aid training, When he did residency he had to work in the ER. He knows what to do. But instead he says he can give you a seasick patch!

Thankfully a fireman was there to do the doctor's job.

6. It's a shame the cruise ship did not have people train to handle emergencies. Cruise liners need to have people trained to handle things like that, so they don't have to depend on a vacationing fireman and police officer to save the day.

  • This is more of a comedy than a drama. It feels like it was written by people who once a fire truck in a toy store.

I worked around firefighters, I've worked EMS, I've worked in emergency rooms... The people of the station are the biggest bunch of bozos. This is a complete insult to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

ABC is killing this show
qxrxscq23 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to give this episode a shot since the first episode was crunchy. But why are they using all the clique cruise ship disaster movies in this with the Poseidon Adventure, Athena's worse fear? I guess the plot in the first five minutes. The writing is still super choppy, and the acting is forced and awkward. There's no fluidity to the episodes like they had in previous seasons. I'm afraid this is the end of the show unless they can get back on track. There's no connection to the two groups until the end but why is Hen the only one that cares? Buck is always worried about Bobby but he's cool as a cucumber in this episode and the rest of the team doesn't care. They're too busy question Hen on her call at the scene.
