Setting up a Hot or Containment Zone:
- Never let the Dosimeter get past above 25 rads, which would require one to exit the area quickly
- We establish a hot zone around the crime scene using our dosimeter readings
- Inside that perimeter, only personnel wearing the class 3 isolation suits and only 30 minutes at a time
Sources of Radiation:
- Cesium-137 from a radiotherapy machine.
- Cobalt-60 from a chemical plant.
- Metal from a scrapyard.
In the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger, the villain Auric Goldfinger plans to use a dirty bomb, or a radiological dispersion device which uses conventional explosives to spread radioactive material, to irradiate the gold in Fort Knox's US Bullion Depository for 58 years. Goldfinger's plan is to make the gold radioactive and unusable, which would increase the value of his own gold and cause economic chaos. However, radioactive gold is unstable and would turn into liquid mercury within days, destroying the gold reserve instead of making it untouchable.
