- "The Old, the Young and the Sea" embarks on an adventurous documentary trip along the Atlantic Coast of France, Spain and Portugal. For the protagonists surfing is a pervading lifestyle. Beginning in the South of France with a regular French gardener who finds himself in the cleavage between being a family dad and an surf extremist, the movie dives into the history of surfing - told by the very first surfers of Spain - now old, humble men. Travelers of today then illustrate the casual heritage these old men created. The story continues with youngsters, sacrificing all of their youth to become professionals some day and their older counterparts who reflect on their professional career, showing that surfing nowadays is first and foremost an industry. To find the niche in which to live was the goal of Clive, a marionette player, living against all clichés, without electricity or sanitation in the forests. Cholo never looked for a different life style - his connection to the sea comes from being a classic Spanish fisherman. Francois, before a regular surfer, discovered an environmental scandal - and Carlos fights for the environment against all odds. Garrett is a professional stuntman, chasing 100 foot waves and Guyom finally shows that will power and persistence are key to live a happy life. All sorts of ocean lovers have their eyes on a very slim stretch of land and water. The movie captures a picture of the vibrant and diverse European life styles through the very personal stories of the movies protagonists.—Mario Hainzl
