At the fifth annual Primetime Emmy Awards in 1953, Helen Hayes won the Best Actress award, thereby becoming the first performer to ever achieve the Triple Crown of Acting. This past Oscar and Tony recipient had now won all three of the American entertainment industry’s most prestigious acting prizes, demonstrating remarkable talent across film, stage, and television. Over the years, 14 women and nine men have followed in her footsteps. Scroll through our photo gallery to learn which two dozen entertainers belong to this exclusive group.
To be included on this list, an individual must have won each award in a competitive acting category. This excludes, for example, James Earl Jones, who was lauded with an honorary Oscar in addition to competitive Emmys and Tonys. Also left out are artists like Mel Brooks, John Legend, and Elton John, all or some of whose wins from the three organizations were for non-acting achievements.

For the second year in a row, “Slow Horses” took home the prize for episodic series; Cord Jefferson won the 2024 award for film adaptation; both he and the author of the novel he adapted, Percival Everett, were in attendance. Jefferson thanked Everett for trusting him with his 2001 novel, which he felt was written just for him. “He has managed to mine my novel for the material he needed to make this film,” said Everett, who teaches at USC. “And then I sat back and did nothing. So good job. Thank you.”

Exclusive: Tony- and Olivier Award-winning actor Bertie Carvel, who portrays Tony Blair opposite Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown, remembers meeting the the real Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace “and nearly head-butting” her “in my attempt to try not to be too obsequious, but to follow the right form.”
He still has a photo of him being introduced to the monarch at an event nine years ago. “I look like the Mr. Bean sketch where he bows and knocks her out. I’m so towering over the queen and I look like I really should have gone to the barber, and I was red-faced and hairy.”
Well, The Crown’s crack hair and makeup team led by designer Cate Hall has ensured that he’s respectfully coiffured to portray Blair.
Proudly, he adds that on his fridge is the badge palace officials handed him at the event,...

The Crown, which has won 21 Emmy Awards during its run on Netflix and is one of the streamer’s most enduringly popular original series, will soon step down from the throne. The show’s sixth season will be its last telling the story of Queen Elizabeth II and Britain’s royal family in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
The critically acclaimed series has chronicled some six decades of Elizabeth II’s reign, recasting its central characters every two seasons as the show moves through recent history as characters age. Claire Foy played the young Elizabeth for The Crown’s first two seasons and was followed by Olivia Colman in seasons three and four; both won Emmys for their work. Imelda Staunton took over the role in season five and will finish out the show as it moves into the early 2000s.

Rob Savage makes scary movies.
After smashing his way into the horror scene with the pandemic chiller "Host" and the divisive horror comedy "Dashcam," Savage made his first major studio movie earlier this year with "The Boogeyman," an adaptation of the Stephen King story of the same name. And while it was a sleeper hit at the box office, the most exciting aspect of the film was that it proved Savage could take on a much bigger movie without losing his edge. This is a frightening film, one coated in dread and literal darkness, with a story just as interested in its shattered characters as its unsettling monster. Some horror directors abandon their spark when they work on a bigger, more expensive studio project. It looks like Savage thrives.
"The Boogeyman" is now available on home video, and to mark the occasion, I sat down with Savage over Zoom to talk about the film,...

According to our current combined predictions, Jodie Comer (“Prima Facie”) is the frontrunner to win Best Actress in a Play at this year’s Tony Awards with 12/5 odds. She already won an Olivier a couple of months ago for her work in the West End production. She would be the fifth Tony winner in this category for a one-woman performance.
In Suzie Miller‘s one-woman show, Comer plays Tessa, a barrister from working-class origins who must deal with an unexpected event that forces her to confront the patriarchal power and morality of the law.
When it comes to solo performances at the Tonys, four have prevailed in this category before. In 1977 Julie Harris won her fifth and final competitive accolade for her portrayal of Emily Dickinson in William Luce‘s “The Belle of Amherst.” In 1986 Lily Tomlin won for playing multiple characters in Jane Wagner‘s “The Search for Signs...

“Women Talking” has won the USC Libraries Scripter Award for adapted screenplay in a ceremony that took place on the USC campus in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
The Scripter Award goes to both the writer of an adapted screenplay and the author of the original material on which the screenplay was based, which meant that the award was given to writer-director Sarah Polley and novelist Miriam Toews, whose 2018 novel formed the basis for Polley’s film.
In the 34-year history of the Scripters, the winner has matched the Oscar winner 14 times, most of those in an eight-year streak between 2010 and 2017.
Other finalists were screenwriter Kazuo Ishiguro for “Living,” based on Leo Tolstoy’s novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich”; screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz and journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey for “She Said”; and Guillermo del Toro, Patrick McHale and Matthew Robbins for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” based on...

Helen Mirren hasn’t played that many historical characters in her storied career. But somehow when she has, she not only brings exemplary acting skill but also an imposing regality, obviously handy when she’s playing monarchs like queens Elizabeth I and II as well as Catherine the Great. That said, surely I’m not the only viewer who has felt that sometimes her portrayals of, say, Alma Hitchcock (in Hitchcock) or Hedda Hopper (Trumbo) are flattering to the women she’s impersonating because Mirren, in addition to being a great performer, is and always has been a great beauty. Her Elizabeth I in The Audience and The Queen, both written by The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan, is the Og screen Lilibet — wry, haughty … and too glam by half, even in a dowdy Barbour jacket and headscarf. Cheekbones will out.

Netflix’s drama The Crown, which chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, will halt production on its fifth season in the wake of the queen’s death.
The queen, the longest reigning monarch in British history, died Thursday at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland. She was 96 years old.
A source confirmed there was a “pause in filming” following the Queen’s death and they wouldn’t make plans to restart until more was known about the date of the funeral, which has yet to be set.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Netflix and The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures for comment. In an email to THR’s sister site Deadline, series creator Peter Morgan called the show “a love letter” to the queen and added, “I expect we will stop filming out of respect.”

Sir Elton John, who has been very close to the British royal family, and was close associate of Princess Diana, articulated the sentiments of many when he wrote on Instagram: “She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth.”

The cast and crew of "The Crown" are taking a moment to mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth II. "Out of respect" for the royal, who died at age 96 on Sept. 8, the show will halt production on its sixth season indefinitely, writer Peter Morgan told Deadline via email on Thursday. "'The Crown' is a love letter to her and I've nothing to add for now, just silence and respect," he wrote. "I expect we will stop filming out of respect, too."
"It would be a simple tribute and a mark of respect. She's a global figure and it's what we should do."
The hiatus comes years after Stephen Daldry, who directed four episodes of "The Crown," told the publication that the show would pause filming for a respectable amount of time should the queen die while the Netflix series was in production. "None of us know when that...

Queen Elizabeth II was the first British monarch to become a film and television character while she was still on the throne. Raucous historical romps about Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were all very well, but showing what a living king or queen got up to behind closed palace doors? That was another, almost treasonous matter. Even as recently as 1991, when Prunella Scales starred in a BBC film of Alan Bennett’s National Theatre play “A Question Of Attribution,” Bennett said “it still feels quite bold to portray her in the flesh.” And the practice was still contentious enough in 2020 for the UK’s then Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden, to ask Netflix to put a disclaimer on screen before every episode of “The Crown,” explaining that the show was not actually a documentary.
But like so much else during Elizabeth II’s uniquely long reign, the protocol changed to a...

Helen Mirren is reacting to the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Mirren played Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, the 2006 British biographical drama film written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Frears, which earned her an Academy Award.
“I’m mourning along with the rest of my country, the passing of a great Queen, Mirren said in a statement provided to Deadline. “I’m proud to call myself of the Elizabethan age. If there was a definition of nobility, Elizabeth Windsor embodied it.”
Mirren also shared her thoughts on Instagram: “I am proud to be an Elizabethan. We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility.”

Mirren also received a BAFTA award for The Queen, as well as a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award for the same role in Morgan’s The Audience.

God Save The Queen. And Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth I.
Queen Elizabeth II was amused today by yet another celebration of her 70th year on the throne. This time, it was a Windsor castle event called “A Gallop Through History,” which the horse-loving Queen delighted in watching.
The theatrical arena event included 1300 performers and 500 horses, and consisted of four acts, each overseen by a different event host, including Top Gun’s Tom Cruise, British actor Damian Lewis, Bridgeton’s Adjoa Andoh and veteran UK performer Alan Titchmarsh.
The event was designed to take viewers on a “gallop through history,” a reenactment dating from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I through the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Highlighting the show was a stage performance featuring Mirren as Elizabeth I whom she previously portrayed in the HBO miniseries Elizabeth I. The Oscar winner also has played Elizabeth II twice in the...

Exclusive: Peter Morgan, creator of award-winning The Crown, has shifted focus from royals to zoom in on Russian oligarchs as the topic of his new stage play Patriots. It has been fast-tracked to have its world premiere at London’s Almeida Theatre in July with Tom Hollander (The Night Manager) cast to portray Boris Berezovsky, a one-time ally of Vladimir Putin.
News of the play comes at a time when the rarified world of wealthy Russians is prominent because of the sanctions that have been imposed on Kremlin moguls following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“I think when we did our first reading, we weren’t sure if there was a place for it,” Almeida Theatre artistic director Rupert Goold, who will direct the play, told Deadline during an exclusive interview.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and in many ways, that would be British producer Suzanne Mackie. As an executive producer on “The Crown,” she has spent the better part of the past 10 years working on the hit Netflix series, taking on her share of controversy along the way. But you’d be hard pressed to find a cooler head: never mind Claire Foy or Olivia Colman, Mackie is the only queen who will see the whole show across its six seasons.
Mackie, who is this year’s recipient of Variety’s Achievement in Intl. TV Award, has shepherded the royal family period piece from the earliest seedling of an idea — pitched when the streaming giant’s eye-watering originals drive was still in its infancy, riding high on “House of Cards” — to the Golden Globe, SAG and Emmy-winning, agenda-setting hit it’s become, both for Netflix and the U.

“Shazam: Fury of the Gods” is adding a super actor to its superhero story, with Oscar-winner Helen Mirren joining the cast as the villain Hespera.
Per the official description, Hespera is described as a daughter of Atlas. Though she doesn’t have a clear DC Comics counterpart, Atlas is the name of several DC Comics characters inspired by the Titan of Ancient Greek mythology, the most famous and enduring version created by the legendary Jack Kirby in 1975.
Mirren is the latest addition to the cast, which includes “West Side Story” breakout Rachel Zegler, who the wrap exclusively reported will appear in an as-yet undisclosed role that will be key to the story.
The sequel to New Line and DC Comics’ acclaimed 2019 film “Shazam!,” “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” will continue the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “Shazam!” is struck by the Living Lightning of...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for Season 4 of “The Crown” and British history between 1979-1990.]
Like the good public school types that they are, the British Royal Family isn’t above a bit of hazing to those who seek to enter its inner circle.
It’s known as “The Balmoral Test” and involves diligent bouts of outdoorsy activity at the Queen’s castle in Scotland. (Traipsing over steep hills in the mud! Stalking stags to kill! Wearing tartans unironically!)
Season 4 of “The Crown” debuts November 15 on Netflix, and early on you learn Margaret Thatcher wore high heels, brought a briefcase and a sneer to Balmoral, and unequivocally, catastrophically failed the test. Diana Spencer wore boots, bangs, and a sweet smile, and passed with flying colors.
In the end, though, they both lose the bigger game of conquering The Firm.
After a subpar Season 3, it turns out that what this ongoing narrative of Queen Elizabeth really needed was an enemy — or two.

Philip J. Smith, Chairman and Co-CEO of The Shubert Organization, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, after 63 years with Broadway’s largest theater owner and producer.
A major force on the theatrical landscape for decades, Smith will also resign his duties as Chairman of The Shubert Foundation, the nation’s largest private foundation dedicated to not-for-profit theater and dance company funding.
Smith will be succeeded at both Shubert and the Shubert Foundation by Shubert’s current President and Co-CEO Robert E. Wankel. Smith will become Chairman Emeritus.
In a statement, Smith said, “The decision to retire feels exactly right at this time in my life. The current Covid-19 crisis has pushed the business of Broadway into uncharted territory. It seems an appropriate time for me to step down and turn over my leadership responsibilities to my friend and colleague, Bob Wankel.”

Helen Mirren knows a thing or two about the Royal Family. The 74-year-old actress won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in the movie The Queen and played Her Majesty in the Broadway production of The Audience. So, what are her thoughts on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal exit? "I think their instincts are absolutely right, and I applaud them for it. Hugely actually," the star, who was given the title of Dame in 2003, told Variety in an interview published Thursday. "Of course, it is complicated." She also had high praise for the Duchess of Sussex. "Meghan Markle was a fantastic addition to the royal family—charming,...

In a superhero-dominated film culture ruled by Marvel and DC, one company is banking on an old, familiar name to shake up the duopoly. Indie film/TV production company Amasia Entertainment announced Wednesday that it secured motion picture rights to classic character The Green Hornet.
First created in 1938 by George W Trendle and later a staple in radio serials, the character spawned multiple big-screen adaptations in the early ’40s before surfacing as a cult hit TV series. Airing just one season from 1966-67, “The Green Hornet” starred Van Williams as Britt Reid, the newspaper publisher who by night fought crime as the masked vigilante that gave the show its title. In one of his early American roles, Bruce Lee played the role of Kato, Britt’s trusted partner.

Monarchy has certainly paid off for Helen Mirren, who has an Oscar (“The Queen“), an Emmy (“Elizabeth I”) and a Tony (“The Audience”) just for playing British queens. But does it pay off just as well for her in “Catherine the Great,” which takes her from the British throne to the seat of power in 18th century Russian? It premiered on HBO on October 21, and critics have been weighing in.
As of this writing “Catherine the Great” has a MetaCritic score of 55 based on seven reviews counted: two positive and five somewhat mixed. But over on Rotten Tomatoes, which rates films on a pass/fail basis, the four-part limited series is rated 80% fresh, suggesting that most of the mixed reviews lean more positive than negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “Helen Mirren delivers a commanding performance in ‘Catherine the Great,’ a sumptuously rendered drama that’s only real shortcoming is its limited runtime.

For the fifth year in a row, there could be new member of the Triple Crown of Acting club. Alan Arkin is just an Emmy short of the Triple Crown, but he may just get it in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for “The Kominsky Method.”
Arkin would be the 25th performer and 10th man to win the top three acting prizes — Oscar, Emmy and Tony — in the biz. The elite group has ballooned in recent years; this decade alone has seen the addition of six new faces. Christopher Plummer completed his set in 2012 with his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for “Beginners.” Helen Mirren (Tony for “The Audience”) and Frances McDormand (Emmy for “Olive Kitteridge”) joined in 2015, followed by Jessica Lange in 2016 (Tony for “Long Day’s Journey into Night”), Viola Davis in 2017 (Oscar for “Fences”) and Glenda Jackson in 2018 (Tony for “Three Tall Women”).

If you need of a little pick-me-up today, look no further than Millie Bobby Brown and Sadie Sink's performance of "For the First Time in Forever" from Disney's Frozen. On Thursday, Brown posted a behind-the-scenes clip of the Stranger Things costars - who were working on set of the Netflix series at the time - channeling Elsa and Anna from the 2013 flick. While Brown played Elsa, Sadie assumed the role of Anna as they showed off their insanely impressive vocals. I mean, if Disney ever wanted to recast the characters' voices, we're throwing Brown and Sink's hats into the ring.
Both actresses have shown off their musical skills before. In May, Brown sang an amazing rendition of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and has previously joined Maroon 5 on stage to rap Cardi B's part of "Girl Like You.

For only the third time this decade, none of the acting winners at this year’s Tony Awards did so for their Broadway debut. This is the 21st time that this has happened over the 73-year history of these top theater honors. While Glenn Close did not join the Triple Crown of Acting club as expected after her Oscar loss for “The Wife,” we may still get a new member for the fifth year in a row. Alan Arkin just needs an Emmy to go with his Oscar and Tony, and what do you know? He’s currently the favorite in our early odds to win Best Comedy Supporting Actor for “The Kominsky Method.”
Arkin, who received Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for the Netflix series, would be the 25th performer to achieve the premier acting trifecta. Fifteen women and nine men have accomplished it, and Arkin would be the first man to do so since Christopher Plummer completed his sweep in 2012 with his Best Supporting Actor Oscar win for “Beginners.”
