Will mentions Occam's broom to acknowledge, as he thinks, that Hannibal is choosing to overlook relevant facts to make a point in Will's defence. Traditionally, Occam's razor is the principle that the simplest solution is always the most likely answer to a problem. That term dates back to the fourteenth century. Occam's broom is a much newer term, invented by molecular biologist, Sidney Brenner, to draw attention to the process of hiding or ignoring inconvenient facts to argue a case better with them swept under the rug.
