After more than two decades making cerebral, critically acclaimed films that also have mass commercial appeal, Christopher Nolan has finally taken home a best picture Oscar with Oppenheimer.
The triumph at the 2024 Oscars comes 15 years after Nolan’s The Dark Knight failed to earn a best picture nomination, a snub that was largely credited with the Academy expanding the number of best picture nominees the following year and which paved the way for a wide swath of contenders. Minutes before his win, Nolan land the first Oscar of his career, when he took the directing prize.
The wins ended a long drought for Nolan, considered the premier director of his generation. Nolan’s Inception and Dunkirk previously were nominated for best picture, but until now, none of his films had taken home the top honor. His first Oscar nom dates back to Memento, the mind-bending film that earned the filmmaker...

Los Angeles, Dec 17 (Ians) Actor Daniel Stern, popular for his acting roles like Marv from the ‘Home Alone’ franchise and Phil in ‘City Slickers’, also has directorial credits as he said that he was the original director of ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’.
In 1993, Stern directed the film ‘Rookie of the Year’, about a Little League baseball player who becomes a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs.
The actor recently revealed that after that film, he was tapped to helm the comedy ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’, which he ultimately turned down, reports deadline.com.

Friends star Matthew Perry died from “acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office said today. The autopsy report also cited drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine — a drug used to treat opioid use disorder — as contributing to his death.
Ketamine is a drug used recreationally that dulls pain, causes forgetfulness, intoxication, disassociation and euphoria. It is also increasingly used under medical supervision to treat depression.
The manner of death was ruled an accident. Perry died October 28 at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. He was 54.
Friends ran from 1994-2004, co-starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow. Perry played Chandler Bing on the Manhattan-set sitcom, which was one of the most-watched shows on U.S. primetime.

Woody Allen is a four-time Academy Award winner who has proved incredibly prolific in his decades-long career, writing, directing, and oftentimes starring in nearly a film a year for over 50 years. But how many of those are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After years as a joke writer and standup comic, Allen transitioned into filmmaking penning such screenplays as “What’s New Pussycat?” (1965) and starring in such titles as “Casino Royale” (1967). His first credit as a director was the comedically overdubbed Japanese spy thriller “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” (1966).
The Woody Allen as we know him emerged in 1969 with the farcical mockumentary “Take the Money and Run” (1969), made when he was 34 years old. The success of that film led to a string of critically acclaimed absurdist comedies, including “Bananas” (1971) and “Sleeper” (1973).

So let's get to it! And remember to keep spinning those discs.

Christopher Nolan took a playful swipe at streaming while introducing a Los Angeles screening of “Oppenheimer” that was devoted to spotlighting the film’s craft. Crew members reunited for the event Monday evening, billed as “The Story of Our Time: The Making of ‘Oppenheimer.'” The director said a lot of time and energy has gone into assembling the “Oppenheimer” Blu-ray so that it preserves the film’s soundscape, which is one reason moviegoers should buy a physical copy as opposed to waiting for the movie to stream.
“Obviously ‘Oppenheimer’ has been quite a ride for us and now it is time for me to release a home version of the film. I’ve been working very hard on it for months,” Nolan said. “I’m known for my love of theatrical and put my whole life into that, but, the truth is, the way the film goes out at home is equally important.

When it really wants to, Netflix does a great job at letting people know what TV shows it has to offer. Unfortunately, with the never-ending wave of new shows constantly arriving, high-profile creators on the creative roster, and shifts in the streaming wars and algorithms that can upend viewer attention at any moment, there always seem to be series that fall between the cracks.

Like countless moviegoers around the world, I’m a major fan of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” But like many of those who saw it, I wasn’t alone in having qualifications about the last part of the movie. For me, the first two hours of “Oppenheimer” were electrifying. I felt the kind of full-scale mind/soul immersion that’s the definition of what we look for when we go to the movies. But in the last hour, I experienced a certain falling-off quality. I was still involved, but less involved. As the film kept returning to the 1954 hearing that resulted in Oppenheimer losing his security clearance, with Oppenheimer in the hot seat being hectored by a team of interrogators led by Jason Clarke’s special counsel to the Aec, I thought, “Why are we still at this damn hearing?” I asked because I didn’t know.

Margot Robbie may not have been as experienced as her Wolf of Wall Street co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. But that didn’t stop the actor from taking charge during their love scene, which DiCaprio wasn’t expecting at all.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: If This Is What A.I. Sex Looks Like, Maybe We Have Nothing to Worry About?
Cinematic dystopias come in many forms. Ridley Scott looked to classic film noir and Asian urban architecture to craft his fallen neon hellscape in “Blade Runner.” Bong Joon-ho juxtaposed railroad opulence with an arctic wasteland in “Snowpiercer.” And for “Creative Control,” Benjamin Dickinson dared to imagine what would happen if characters from a Noah Baumbach movie could make their own interactive porn.
Dickinson’s 2015 sci-fi drama obviously isn’t a dystopian film in the conventional sense.

The Bones of What You Believe will receive an extended-release on Oct. 20 featuring four old but newly-released songs, including this most recent track and “Manhattan,” which was shared earlier this summer.
“Some of the main sources of inspiration for our first album, including ‘Talking In My Sleep’ were artists that we all share a love for, and a lot of stuff from the 80s,” Iain Cook shared in a statement.

Lauren Mayberry has embarked on her first solo tour, which she kicked off in Washington D.C. at 9:30 Club last night. During the set, which included a cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.”
Taking the stage with mic stands adorned with flowers, she and her band gave a fairly faithful rendition of the classic title track of Madonna’s 1989 album, with Mayberry adding a tambourine, as fan footage shows.
She also debuted a number of solo songs and did not perform any tracks from Chvrches, as Stereogum reports.

Lauren Mayberry, frontwoman of Chvrches, has released her debut solo single, “Are You Awake?” The piano-driven ballad was written with Tobias Jesso Jr. and Matthew Koma, who also produced the song.
The track came about after a writing session between Mayberry and Jesso Jr. “I was thinking a lot about loneliness and homesickness, and as soon as Tobias started playing the chords, the lyrics and melody came to me really quickly,” Mayberry said in a statement. “I finished the song with my friend Matthew Koma, who really understood what I was trying to say.

Manhattan served as something of a fifth main character in Sex and the City. The city provided the perfect backdrop for Carrie Bradshaw and her pals to shop, eat, and find eligible bachelors. For most of the show’s six-season run, the girls rarely ventured off the island. Still, it did happen occasionally. We’ve collected all the times the ladies of Sex and the City found themselves as fish out of water while away from Manhattan.

Carrie and her pals were pretty attached to the East Coast, but that doesn’t mean they never left. The group traveled to California in season 3 of Sex and the City. In a two-episode story arc, Carrie leaves New York to meet with a film executive to discuss potentially optioning her columns.

When For All Mankind Season 4 gets underway on Apple TV+, viewers will see less of one of its most popular stars.
TV Line reports that Jodi Balfour is bowing out of the alt-history drama as a series regular.
Balfour, who plays Ellen, is expected to appear in some capacity.
The series has said goodbye to some fantastic people over the years, and something tells us we'll be saying goodbye to more as the years in the narrative go on.

In Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a fair amount is made of Klaus Fuchs, the German theoretical physicist who passed secrets from Los Alamos to the Soviet Union. But nowhere in this substantive blockbuster do we hear about Theodore Hall. A wunderkind physicist from Far Rockaway, New York City, recruited to the Manhattan Project as an 18-year-old Harvard senior, Hall, too, shared atomic secrets with the Soviets, for what he later claimed were purely moral reasons: He thought the possibility of the U.S. — or any country — having a monopoly on...

A Compassionate Spy (Steve James)
See an exclusive clip above.
The latest film from acclaimed documentarian Steve James, A Compassionate Spy, comes with a fascinating subject: the spy who leaked nuclear information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union, therefore ensuring that America could not establish a nuclear monopoly on the world. It’s easy to see why James would be drawn to the spy, Theodore “Ted” Hall, and his wife Joan as he has often been interested in using individuals as the framework to explore larger societal issues. Utilizing a hybrid of recreations, archival footage, and modern-day interviews, James crafts a portrait of a man, a relationship, and the sheer weight of the decision to betray your country to save the world.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is shaping up to be a career-defining role for Cillian Murphy. The longtime Nolan ensemble member stepped into a lead role in one of the auteur’s films for the first time, and his nuanced performance as atomic bomb inventor J. Robert Oppenheimer has made him an early Oscar frontrunner. You could even say that Oppenheimer was a role that Murphy was born to play.
As it turns out, Murphy came close to portraying the infamous nuclear physicist in another project nearly a decade ago. One of the most recent dramatizations of the Manhattan Project was the WGN TV series “Manhattan,” which featured Daniel London in a reoccurring role as Oppenheimer. In a new interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Sam Shaw and writer Lila Byock revealed that they cast a wide net when searching for the right actor to play father of the atomic bomb. This post contains spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
"Oppenheimer" is now out in theaters. Directed by Christopher Nolan with his go-to man Cillian Murphy in the leading role, the film chronicles J. Robert Oppenheimer's involvement in the Manhattan Project from its build-up to its aftermath.
The film doesn't show the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but it does condemn them. All onscreen U.S. military and political higher-ups are gung-ho that the bombings be carried out and downright flippant about the loss of life in Japan. When Oppenheimer despairs that he has blood on his hands, President Harry Truman (Gary Oldman) eyes him with disdain and calls him a "crybaby."
Whether the bombings were justified or not is a debate that will rage far into the future. What's undeniable is that the loss of life left a scar on Japan. They hold the unique distinction of being the only country to...

With a little help from "Barbie," "Oppenheimer" enjoyed a historic opening weekend at the box office, bringing in an impressive $82 million. Such success not only proved that Christopher Nolan is one of the all-time best box office bets, but that original ideas can still triumph despite not being based on long-standing IP. That is, unless you consider J. Robert Oppenheimer a kind of existing IP. The man who created the atomic bomb and changed our world forever was always going to command significant cultural awareness. In that sense, Nolan isn't operating entirely without the aid of audience familiarity.
Still, it's not as though the director's adaptation of Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's biography, "American Prometheus," was ever going to have the same cultural caché as, say, Batman propelling its box office. Which just makes the success of "Oppenheimer" all the more impressive. And while much of that is...

If you’re making a production with J. Robert Oppenheimer in it, your casting call is likely to include Cillian Murphy.
As it turns out, Murphy — who plays the title role in Universal’s film box office hit — was also considered to play Oppenheimer in a short-lived TV series.
Manhattan, a show on WGN America nine years ago, was set in the Los Alamos, N.M. efforts to develop an atomic bomb. The series primarily centered on Frank Winter (played by John Benjamin Hickey), a physics professor leading the Manhattan Project.
J. Robert Oppenheimer appeared during the first season and in beefed up appearances in Season 2. But that was the last season for the series.
“When we were casting Oppenheimer, we went through a whole series of different ideas,” Lila Byock (The Leftovers), a writer on Manhattan and the wife of series creator Sam Shaw (Castle Rock), told Vanity Fair.

For cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, the challenge with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” was about capturing what was going on inside the head of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the A-bomb — what he’s thinking and what we can read in his eyes. For costume designer Ellen Mirojnick, whether it was a two-piece suit or three-piece suit, it was his silhouette. Part of that was finding his hat, which is a character unto itself.
“The hat and its brim were extremely important, it was a grayish taupe hat, and depending on the light, it would look like it was a different tone,” Mirojnick says.
This film required a different approach for the famed costume designer, whose credits include “Basic Instinct,” “Wall Street” and “Bridgerton.” “In this film and in working with Chris, what became clear to me after our first meeting was that the Oppenheimer silhouette never changed,” she says.

Before Christian Bale landed the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy, the filmmaker screen-tested his “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy. Both men have since admitted that Murphy was never a real threat to steal the part from Bale, and Murphy told GQ Magazine UK in a recent interview that it “was for the best” that Bale won the coveted role over him anyway.
“Yes, I think it was for the best because we got Christian Bale’s performance, which is a stunning interpretation of that role,” Murphy said. “I never considered myself as the right physical specimen for Batman. To me, it was always going to be Christian Bale.”
Nolan didn’t think Murphy was right for the part either, but he still screen-tested him for Batman so that executives at Warner Bros. could see what an amazing actor he was. The director wanted Murphy...

Ghostface takes Manhattan in Scream VI, the latest installment in the slasher franchise. The home video release includes an informative audio commentary with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and executive producer Chad Villella.
Here are 12 things I learned from the Scream VI Blu-ray commentary…
1. Samara Weaving was the first and only choice for the opening scene.
Samara Weaving, who starred in Radio Silence’s Ready or Not, was the first and only choice to play Laura, the ill-fated film studies professor that serves as the opening kill. The actress has stated it’s the closest character to herself she’s ever played.
Gillett says, “We were walking to dinner in Montreal when we were like, ‘Let’s just call her and see if she’s game.'” They did so, and “she was super, super game to come and hang out with us for a few days.

Films about the end of the world are nothing new. But films about the real end of the world–the moments in human history that seem to have put us on an inevitable path toward our own self-destruction–are less frequent. In the 1950s, as the Cold War took hold and the threat of nuclear war escalated, most of the films that came out dealt with it in terms of metaphor, usually sci-fi ones, like giant irradiated lizards and insects standing in for hydrogen bombs.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer addresses one of those moments in history head-on, giving us not just a glimpse into the tormented mind of the “father of the atomic bomb,” but a you-are-there, immersive front row seat to the very moment in which the first bomb was detonated and the end of the human race came into clear view, starting with what many now consider to...

The reviews are in for the box office head-to-head showdown of the summer.
On Tuesday, the critic embargo lifted for Barbie. On Wednesday, reviews were posted for Oppenheimer.
Below is a round-up of some what’s being said by top critics about both films opening this week.
But first: Which has scored higher, on average?
Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are getting overwhelmingly positive reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie as the doll icon has a very fashionable 89 percent positive score, while Christopher Nolan’s historical drama Oppenheimer starring Cillian Murphy is just slightly more explosive at 92 percent.
In terms of box office, their contest is not expected to be nearly as tight. Barbie is estimated to bring in $90 to $110 million across its opening weekend, while Oppenheimer (partly hindered by its three-hour running time) is expected to tally about $40 to $49 million.

It’s Day 5 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 78 of the WGA strike.
Writers and actors on strike simultaneously for the first time in more than 60 years fanned out across Manhattan on Tuesday morning with renewed demands for better pay, more job security and limits on the use of artificial intelligence in film and television.
The Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA ran picket lines at four locations near the offices of NBCUniversal, Paramount, Amazon, HBO, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. WGA marchers said they welcomed SAG-AFTRA members joining them on strike as of Friday, after months of backing the Writers Guild in its dispute with the major film and television production companies.
“It does feel different,” writer, comedian and WGA East member Josh Gondelman said outside NBCUniversal headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. “It’s really heartening to have this infusion of energy and the same righteous anger out on the lines that we had.

The film hosted its world premiere in Paris, shortly before the cast walked out of the U.K. premiere amid the SAG-AFTRA strike being announced July 14. “Oppenheimer” is set to debut in theaters July 20 and stars Cillian Murphy as the titular father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer. Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. are among the star-studded ensemble cast.
Writer-director Nolan used real explosions in lieu of CGI to mimic the first detonation of the atomic bomb during the Trinity Test. The entire film was shot in IMAX. “Oppenheimer” is inspired by 2005 book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin and centers on Manhattan Project leader J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy) as he grapples with the moral repercussions of creating the bomb.

The new Pixar and Disney animated feature “Elemental” has several classic film inspirations behind it, ranging all the way from the 1967 romantic drama “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” to 1974’s “Godfather 2” (you read that right).
For director Peter Sohn, no film was off-limits for a story that held deep personal connection to him. “Films that took cities and made them into characters. The beautiful Gordon Willis cinematography of ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Annie Hall.’ ‘Amelie,’ how they made Paris into a postcard, but then love stories from ‘Sense and Sensibility’ to ‘Moonstruck,'” Sohn told TheWrap.
But whether the film is considered a romantic comedy is a point of contention between the cast and the writers. “Whenever people call this a rom-com — not to disagree, there are obviously romantic elements — but, for me, this movie has been always primarily about family,” said Mamoudou Athie, who plays Wade in the film.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has officially earned an R-rating by the MPA, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed, marking a rare Nolan feature to get such a rating.
Nolan’s breakout feature Memento (2000) and his next outing, Insomnia (2002), were both rated R, but he has largely stayed in the PG-13 sphere. Actor David Dastmalchian once noted that The Dark Knight (2008) edited a moment involving his character to maintain a PG-13 rating. Dunkirk, his 2017 World War II feature that depicted multiple battle scenes, was also PG-13.
Oppenheimer, which opens July 21, is Nolan’s first feature since the pandemic-era Tenet (2020) and follows his departure from longtime home Warner Bros. for Universal after he expressed displeasure over Warners’ plan to send its 2021 slate day-and-date to HBO Max. Oppenheimer is also the longest film of his career at nearly three hours.
