There are films that are intentionally bad such as those from Troma studios (Toxic Avenger, Poultrygeist) but Troma knows its audience and anyone seeing a Troma film knows what they are getting into. Blu-ray fans are now well aware that many great movies unavailable in the U.S., can be easily found in Europe. One of the best westerns of the ’70s is this jarringly realistic cavalry vs. Apaches drama from Robert Aldrich and Burt Lancaster, which used the ‘R’ rating to show savage details that Hollywood had once avoided. In this case it works — the genuinely scary movie is also a serious meditation on violent America.

Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga had a whirlwind romance and were engaged within a year — then never made wedding plans.
Though they never tied the knot, the couple seemed to be one of Hollywood’s most stable pairs. But on Thursday night, fans were shocked when the American Idol alum announced she had separated from the retired wrestler and received a protective order against the father of her 8-year-old son David Daniel Otunga, Jr. Otunga’s attorney told People his client plans to fight for primary custody.
According to Otunga, 37, it was actually Hudson, 36, who first set her sights on him.

Last summer, Maria Bamford joined the throng of must-binge Netflix shows with “Lady Dynamite.” The comedy, loosely based on her own life, was an instant hit, moving beyond diehard fans and capturing a larger audience. With Halloween quickly approaching, horror fans everywhere are in search of the next great scary movie. While 2017 has been a phenomenal year for the genre -- with standouts like Split, Annabelle: Creation, It and Get Out -- audiences need only to look back on the late ’90s slasher era for some of horror’s best thrills.
The genre was more popular than ever thanks to the colossal success of Scream in 1996, with almost every major film studio attempting to recreate that same magic. Soon, everything from Urban Legends to a new installment of Halloween with Jamie Lee Curtis followed. Between 1996 and 2000, the horror genre was at an all-time high. So high, it almost became hard to keep track of them all.
But one slasher film in particular stands out among the rest: I Know What You Did Last Summer, which came out 20 years ago on Oct. 17, 1997.
It’s not all that surprising, given the screenplay...

Last summer, there were two terrific, big screen comedies that everybody slept on: “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” and “The Nice Guys.” It’s a small crime that audiences largely shunned the films, and if you haven’t watched them yet, you’re only hurting yourself. At any rate, we didn’t think anybody had remembered the movies, but it turns out that that at least one of them is being eyed for a small screen reboot.

As Peak TV expands beyond what we thought was even possible — what was the last count, more than 420 scripted dramas? — top shelf filmmakers continue to migrate to the medium because networks are voracious for content and willing to throw the kind of money around that movie studios are reluctant to do (which is why they’re falling behind, frankly).

The good news: the Top Ten grosses dropped a bit over one third from the same weekend last year with a total of $97 million. That’s compared to last weekend, which was down more than half.
The bad news: despite a profitable showing for producer James Wan’s horror prequel “Annabelle: Creation” (Warner Bros.), August could wind up with the worst ticket sales in decades. Year-to-date grosses, which have been keeping pace with 2016 most of the year, are now over four per cent lower. The summer results will be much further down from last year, with the month likely to be off something like 40 per cent.
While this could be an aberration with an autumn rebound just ahead, it comes in the face of disconcerting news that “Wolf Warrior 2,” a Chinese-made period sequel, has grossed $681 million on its home turf. China has produced its own hits before, but lately has struggled with home product.

Largely scaring off sequel fatigue, Warner Bros./New Line's Annabelle: Creation topped Friday's box-office chart with $15 million from 3,502 theaters for a projected domestic debut of $36 million-plus.
The origin film, directed by David F. Sandberg, is the fourth installment in the studio's successful Conjuring horror franchise and looks to open on par with 2014's Annabelle ($37.1 million). Hollywood — and theater owners — are in need of some good news amid an overall summer decline.
Annabelle ultimately earned $256.9 million worldwide. Last summer, Conjuring 2 opened to $40.4 million on its way to grossing $320.3 million globally.

Thanks be to the generous souls on Letterboxd who run the“Not Andrew Sarris” and “Not Dave Kehr” accounts with their thoughtful capsule reviews. When logging my viewing for Metrograph’s upcoming series, On Fire Island, I found reviews for Andy Warhol and Chuck Wein’s My Hustler, Frank Perry’s Last Summer, and Bill Sherwood’s Parting Glances by the aforementioned critics. Stan Lopresto’s Sticks and Stones and Wakefield Poole’s Boys in the Sand (also screening in the series) are noticeably missing professional critiques. Looking further, Last Summer is the only film of the five to receive a fair shake from a robust number of film critics and the write-ups for My Hustler and Parting Glances are more first impressions than researched arguments.

Disney World is honoring the lost life of a young boy. Last summer, 2-year-old Lane Graves was killed at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa when an alligator attacked him as he was playing in the sand on the beach. Now over a year removed from the tragedy, Disney World has erected a statue in remembrance of the child and in solidarity with his parents' Lane Thomas Foundation. The memorial statue is of a lighthouse, the symbol of the foundation, adorned with two blue stars and a plaque that reads, "Presented to the Lane Thomas Foundation. A beacon of hope. A light of love." It stands near where the tragedy occurred. "We find comfort that so many people continue to remember our...

For most, the name Kenneth Cole is likely synonymous with practical, yet stylish, footwear, high quality leather goods, and office-ready basics. But Cole isn’t just the designer helping you build your young professional wardrobe, he’s also a man who has dedicated his life to HIV/AIDS awareness and activism. Since 1985, the designer has been publicly involved and outspoken about the health crisis, advocating for awareness, research, and protection, and he is often considered the first in the fashion industry to do so. In the past, he has donated a percentage of his proceeds to organizations such as Mentoring USA,...

Is summer the new highbrow? Last month, three of the top five films were critical darlings: “War for the Planet of the Apes” (#1), “Baby Driver” (#4), and “The Big Sick” (#5). Then came “Dunkirk,” which was declared an Oscar frontrunner and spent the last two weeks at #1.
That’s rare among top-grossing studio releases, maybe even unprecedented. Studios tend to save high-end, critics-oriented titles for late fall — the better to court Oscars, and because adult audiences are more likely to show up. And since the 1970s triumphs of “Jaws” and “Star Wars,” summer has been the domain of mass-audience and increasingly sequel/franchise titles, critics be damned.
To make sense of this, we start with the critical metrics. This summer, 12 titles will likely earn $100 million or more. (Last summer, 14 hit the mark.) The average Metacritic score for these 12 films is 66, defined as “generally favorable.” Last year’s crop came in at 54, which is “mixed or average.

Variety recently announced that Kevin Spacey is to bring Gore Vidal to our screens in a Netflix original film. Directed by Michael Hoffman (dir. The Last Station), Spacey might be the most perfect casting, and judging by some coded, jovial remarks at the Tony Awards this year, may relish a role like this.
Vidal's life has previously been on screen in documentaries: Gore Vidal: United States of Amnesia and Best of Enemies, about his combative relationship with William F. Buckley.
Vidal: Writer, bon vivant, public intellectual and unapologetic homosexual has a rich, albeit chequered history in cinema. Screenwriter for the frenzied Suddenly, Last Summer, debauched bloodbath Caligula and his own notorious novel Myra Breckinridge was adapted into X-rated 1970 film.
And as uncredited writer of Ben-Hur, he was responsible for those lingering glances between Stephen Boyd and Charlton Heston - not that Heston ever knew that...

Mika Brzezinski is setting the record straight about President Trump‘s tweet regarding her alleged face-lift — which wasn’t a face-lift at all.

Brzezinski says she started laughing when her coworker Willie Geist first showed her Trump’s widely derided tweets, in which he claimed she was “bleeding badly from a face-lift” when she and her fiancé and co-host Joe Scarborough visited the Trumps...

Last summer, the rowdy comedy Bad Moms was an unexpected box office hit. Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn starred as three overworked and under-appreciated mothers who jettisoned their conventional responsibilities to taste freedom and enjoy a little long-overdue fun. News of a sequel was no surprise. A few months after that announcement, we heard that Justin Hartley (TV's This Is Us) would be joining the original cast as a firefighter who moonlights as an erotic dancer. Then came a bigger bombshell, as we learned that comic veterans Susan Sarandon, Cheryl Hines and Christine Baranski would play the mothers of Hahn, Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis, respectively. The mind reeled with comic possibilities. What hilarity can we expect from A Bad Moms Christmas this...

This year, the second season will be rolling out on Sunday, June 23 at 10 p.m. Et (same time slot) and there are even more ways that you can stream Preacher. This is not surprising when you consider that Preacher was one of the most popular cable dramas last year. For those of you who are new to Preacher, I highly recommend catching up with Season 1 before you delve into this new season. For those who need a refresher, Preacher is based on a comic

On the day a U.S. appeals court lifted an injunction that blocked a Mississippi “religious freedom” law – i.e., giving Christian extremists the right to discriminate against gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, etc. – not to mention the publication of a Republican-backed health care bill targeting the poor, the sick, the elderly, and those with “pre-existing conditions” – which would include HIV-infected people, a large chunk of whom are gay and bisexual men, so the wealthy in the U.S. can get a massive tax cut, Turner Classic Movies' 2017 Gay Pride or Lgbt Month celebration continues (into tomorrow morning, Thursday & Friday, June 22–23) with the presentation of movies by or featuring an eclectic – though seemingly all male – group: Montgomery Clift, Anthony Perkins, Tab Hunter, Dirk Bogarde, John Schlesinger, Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Arthur Laurents, and Jerome Robbins. After all, one assumes that, rumors or no, the presence of Mercedes McCambridge in one...
