A good plot-laying episode
i-am-so-original25 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This week's episode of Fargo, titled "The Rooster Prince," was a slower episode than last week, and certainly less exciting, but that's not to say that it was a particularly bad episode. Part of what makes these cable shows so great is the slow build and the character development, and this seems to be "The Rooster Prince"'s primary concern – to set up the story, and to develop the characters to get them where they need to be for the big, showstopping moments.

We started out this episode with two new, magnificent characters: Mr. Numbers and Mr. Wrench, with a great performance by Adam Goldberg. These two characters seem connected to Sam Hess in some mafioso-like connection, and they are now investigating the death of Hess. I love these two new characters, as they seem both funny and menacing, and this accentuated by the fact that they communicate through sign language. It's a neat twist on the typical hit men-like characters, and it makes them appear more human and warm/comforting than their actions indicate. I'm excited to see how these two new characters will eventually reach Malvo, and how their resulting interaction will play out.

The episode also bolstered some great performances, especially between Martin Freeman and Allison Tolman. I'm not sure how I feel about Tolman's character, Molly. I understand that she's the moral center of the show, and I understand that she's simply doing her job and trying to apprehend the clearly guilty Lester, but she seems a little annoying to me. I can't quite articulate why I think this way – maybe it's her persistent attitude or her childish personality, but I'm not quite liking her enough to warrant my emotional attachment for eight more episodes. That said, the scene in the drug store between Molly and Lester was both terrifically tense and very well-acted. It got even more so when Lester was being interrogated in his own car, clearly desperate and wanting out of the situation. Martin Freeman's performance was amazing, as you could clearly see the fright and the escalating terror of Lester's situation.

The episode was also well done in its cinematic scope and some great writing. I remember vividly the scene between Malvo and the mailman. This scene portrayed a very No Country for Old Men vibe to me, reminiscent of Chigurh's interrogation of the gas station man in the film. It was a terrifically tense scene, well acted by both Thornton and the old man, and it had some great lighting.

Overall, it was a little slow, and it has certainly laid back since the pilot episode, but that is a price I am willing to pay for some good character building and plot foundation-laying. I'm excited to see what this show has in store for the coming weeks.

+ Great new characters

+ Terrific performances

+ Cinematic scope, with great writing and cinematography

  • Molly is pretty annoying

  • A slower episode

Overall: B+

"You need to see what's good in the world because if you don't how you gonna live"

Warning: Spoilers
The second episode of this series (The Rooster Prince) gives you more of what you loved about the first episode and that's great. I only have good points on this episode, no cons at all. The series has really hit a home run with its first two episodes, i hope it continues like this. I few things i love about the series which shine a lot in this episode is the black comedy which comes from the great writing. One of my funniest parts in this episode is when Dmitri (Stavros Milos son) comes bursting into the room and tells the karate joke. I like a series that can balance drama, comedy and action. A strong factor about this episode was the small stories that were told by a few of the characters, they really pull you in and make you enjoy every scene. Also it gives you a strong feel for the characters. Once again the performances continue to impress me, new characters get introduced in this episode and it works. It may feel like too many characters are being forced into the show at once but i like that about it. Everyone has their own story to tell.

I really did enjoy the first two episodes and i hope it gets even better. I recommend watching this even if you thought first one was a bit slow, this is faster paced. Thank you for reading, if you have any enquiries feel free to email me.

The Knot Gets Tighter
Hitchcoc4 October 2015
Lester is a wreck. Because everyone thinks he is harmless, he manages, for the time being, to be free from accusation. However, Molly, who lost her partner and friend, isn't so sure. She thinks something stinks. Her idiot police chief keeps interrupting her when she tries to ask questions. He has decided that the murders were committed by "drifters." Meanwhile, Lorne is creeping around. Everything with him is a non sequitur. What exactly is he up to? Then, there are two strange men who come into town. One does all the talking; the other signs. Lester has a gunshot to his hand and it is beginning to become infected. As he tries to get something at the drug store, he is again confronted by Molly. He walks away from her, but that makes him even more suspicious. Watch for two fun scenes. One is the idiot son of a big time grocer who has an agenda. The other is the closing scene on the lake. This episode is full of exposition. We'll have to wait to see where it takes us.

Awesome.

Solid episode.

Wow this show is seriously growing on me..

Honestly, the show's cinematography and music are used so well it reminds me of the days of Breaking Bad. Everything is there for a reason and everything has been used in such an intriguing and interesting way.

There are so many vibes and emotions you get from this show and that is what I like most about it. You feel sad and depressed in one moment and in the next you are just suddenly completely locked on the screen due to the immense intensity of the scene.

Once again, kudos to Martin and Billy Bob for yet two more great performances.

Cant wait for next week.

"Highly irregular is the time I found a human foot in a toaster oven"

Warning: Spoilers
After such an eventful pilot that was almost a mini-movie in itself a slower-moving second episode makes sense. It delivers no major twists but continues to lay the plot and develop the investigation into the murders. The humour, again, is sharp and makes it all the more entertaining.

Molly being suspicious of the right guy creates an interesting situation where you can see she is doing the right thing by trying to investigate Lester but at the same time you have sympathy for Lester due to the knowledge of why he committed the murder. He's obviously not a great guy, but the weakness of his character makes it easy to feel sorry for him. Molly is doing her job and doing it well, yet I don't want her to get closer to the truth. Partly this is because I don't want Lester to get caught, and also because of her father's comment. She seems too nice to have to see the evil in this world.

Lorne Malvo steals the show again. Any scene with him in it is bound to be hilarious. Billy Bob does such a good job playing him. This episode he isn't involved in the main plot, instead getting caught up in a blackmail storyline, which is a bit weak but held up by the fact that it has Lorne in it. Without a doubt, he's my favourite character. The way he bends people to his will shows how you can intimidating without even raising your voice. He also comes up with some hilarious lines. The subplot of the two new hitmen isn't that interesting. They get the wrong guy, but that's about it. They'll probably be important later I'm guessing.

Still, even though many elements in Fargo don't sound amazing, it's the way they're presented, along with that brilliant humour, that makes them so appealing.

This is highly irregular - but damn entertaining.
Hey_Sweden14 April 2023
Molly, having strong suspicions about Lester, is determined to get the truth out of him, but when she attempts to interview him, he gets all flustered - as if he wasn't flustered enough already - and accuses her of harassment. Two muscle men from Fargo, Mr. Numbers (Adam Goldberg), and the deaf Mr. Wrench (Russell Harvard), show up to track down the mystery man who murdered Sam Hess. And Lorne Malvo has moved on to a new gig, trying to find out who has been blackmailing "supermarket king" Stavros Milos (Oliver Platt).

As before, the appeal of this series lies in a colorful bunch of characters, some of whom are VERY determined to do their job. It seems that Molly will have to grin and bear her situation, since the dense Bill (Bob Odenkirk), who's been made the new police chief, has reverse tunnel vision when it comes to Lester. Unfortunately, he's so convinced that Lester is too wimpy to hurt even a fly that he encourages Molly to think of the perpetrator(s) as possibly being one or more drifters.

This cast is just fantastic to watch. Billy Bob Thornton is still a case study in carefully restrained evil. His big moment in this episode shows him taking a dump in front of a goon named Semenko (Barry Flatman) just to show the goon how NOT intimidated he is by the guy. And the new characters are fun, with Goldberg, Harvard, and Platt adding a lot to the mix.

It will be interesting to wait and see how long it takes for the truth to come out, so writer / series creator Noah Hawley did his job in reeling in the viewers.

Fargo: S1E2 "The Rooster Prince" Review - King Cadmium
kingcadmium27 February 2022
Molly begins to suspect that Lester is involved with the murders, but her new boss points her in a different direction. Meanwhile, Malvo investigates the blackmail plot against a man known as the Supermarket King.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its beautiful and mesmerizing music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance, with Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman being the clear standouts.

Malvo is one of the most intriguing individuals you will see on television, with Thornton's portrayal being nothing short of superb, along with Freeman's portrayal of Lester.

What I Disliked:

Why would a crime syndicate have a deaf hitman working for them? Even with a translator, this seems highly unrealistic to me.

Molly isn't as likable as I believe she's supposed to be, coming across as an annoying character rather than a protagonist. Perhaps she will become more endearing as the season progresses.

Overall:

Fargo delivers a great follow-up to what was a fantastic premiere. While not quite as great as the premiere, this has been a highly enthralling viewing experience so far.

Unfortunately became regretful criminal.

Warning: Spoilers
I am very excited how it will the coming mistakes of Lester. Novice criminal can't develop a lie protected by his old high-school friend the new chief officer of the town.

It worth noting that we might misjudge people by the stereotype we built in our mind about them, sometimes criminals might look as Lester face.

"Leave poor Lester alone"
gedikreverdi1 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Odenkirk is such a good actor! His character saves Nygaard from going to prison unlike the female officer who's suspecting him. A weird duo is looking for the killer of Lester's bully and they opened a hole in the ice on top of a lake and threw him in the water. He looked like the hit man and that's it.
