- The guys try to figure out where Lily went after her fight with Marshall and why. Meanwhile, after a talk with her mother, Robin is concerned that she is marrying her father.
- Marshall is sitting around with Ted, Barney, Ranjit and William Zabka talking about, among other things, Marshall soon becoming a judge. It makes Marshall think about how Lily gave up so easily about her dream to move to Italy after going missing for a few hours after their heated and very passionate argument. As such, Marshall wants to find out what Lily did during those few hours that made her change her mind. Billy mentions that he thinks he saw Lily get into a car at a local store down the road, that car who Marshall figures out belongs to The Captain. Marshall's first thought is that Lily had sex with The Captain, who Marshall now wants to beat up. But the group going to visit The Captain makes Marshall realize that that could not have been the case, despite Lily indeed having been there at The Captain's house. Ted thinks he's figured out the mystery, which he slowly - glacially - begins to tell everyone. Is Ted correct? Meanwhile, Robin is still surprised that her mother showed up, she who wants to meet Barney. In talking to her mother about her own marriage makes Robin believe that she may be looking at herself in thirty years.—Huggo
- Four hours before the wedding, Robin asks her mother how she made it despite a fear of flying. Genevieve (Tracey Ullman) says she somehow got over the fear despite panicking on board and accidentally opening the exit door, resulting in her being restrained to her seat by duct tape. Genevieve asks Robin more about Barney and immediately makes comparisons to Robin Sr. Genevieve's various descriptions of Robin Sr. rankle Robin and Lily because the similarities with Barney make Robin think she's about to marry someone like Robin Sr.
Robin Sr. was engaged to a stripper, he dressed up like a Prussian aristocrat just to impress women, he would always take his mother's side in arguments, never checked with Genevieve before making any plans, nobody knew what he did for a living, slept with over 20 women in his life, was a pathological liar and they had a huge fight right before their rehearsal dinner. Genevieve says that she cannot believe that she missed all these red flags about Robin Sr.
Marshall discusses his upcoming judgeship with Ted, Barney, Ranjit and Billy Zabka, he admits he feels guilty due to Lily's desire to move to Italy and confused at her changing her mind while she was gone. Zabka claims he saw Lily leaving a nearby convenience store in a car owned by the Captain. Marshall assumes that Lily cheated on him with the Captain and that this was the main reason that she changed her mind about going to Rome, so she could stay with the Captain. The men go to the Captain's estate in the Farhampton area to confront him and discover he's engaged to Robin's old colleague Becky (Laura Bell Bundy). The Captain insists that nothing happened between him and Lily, who came to use the powder room. Ted theorizes that the powder room faces the ocean and has a potted plant in it which gets sunlight from the Southern exposure. When the Captain brings Ted a daisy from the powder room, Ted analyzes Lily's actions over the past several days. He theorizes that Lily wanted to smoke ever since she got separated from Marshall. She picked a fight with Ted in the car, so she could catch a smoke in the train. To cover her breath, she asked for gum at the Inn, and Lily never chews gum. She took the Kennedy package to suppress her urge for another smoke.
Her fight with Marshall made her smoke one last cigarette. She was out of smokes, and she called the Captain for a car. She went to the nearest store to pick a cigarette pack and went to the Captain's house to smoke in the powder room. Ted deduces that the cigarette may be in the daisy's vase and searches for it. The gang finds a positive pregnancy test. Lily paid Linus to serve her non-alcoholic drinks because she threw up on the train to Farhampton and feared she might be pregnant, later buying the test kit at the store.
The men return to the Farhampton Inn, where Marshall reconciles with Lily over her pregnancy and tells her they are moving to Italy to let her pursue her dream. Barney is introduced to his soon-to-be mother-in-law, whom he embraces. Noting that Barney is a hugging person unlike Robin Sr., Genevieve brings Robin to the balcony and tries to ease her wedding jitters. A year later in Rome, it is revealed that Marshall and Lily's second child is a girl named Daisy.
Deleted scene. A scene cut from this episode explains where the pineapple, one of the show's running gags from "The Pineapple Incident", came from. In the clip, The Captain has a pineapple on his porch, and explains to the gang that he practices the tradition of putting one outside as a "symbol of hospitality". This leads Ted to remember stealing an identical pineapple from The Captain's house in New York when he was very drunk.
